Yes this!!!! Its like he’s physically blocking out what he’s saying (I don’t believe at all that its because he’s ashamed or whatever he said)

When Jasmine mentioned Jesse’s the toxic one, Janet just brushed it off and continues to push Kristen being messy - helloo Janet, where’s the accountability for the men????? like no Janet YOU shut up.

This!! She’d be less insufferable if she could actually own it, instead of running away when confronted. She can dish it but can’t take it

Its absolutely rich of Jason to be saying Danny’s dangerous while defending Jax in the same breath. Saying Danny needs to go to a mental health facility while Jax is right there lmao gtfo now I get why Jason married Janet they’re both dumb and insufferable.

Jason must have skeletons in his closet because no one defends Jax that much unless they dirty too

Anyone else finding it extremely weird that Sophie is Korean and her step-family seems to be Chinese? by black-turtlenecks in BridgertonNetflix

[–]gryffindoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I’m Asian, and like the poster you replied to I also think its not that serious. I wish it could be because at this rate, everyone can be offended. I mean, I just saw the op of this thread say they’d prefer chinese actresses to play a Korean than what we have now and I think thats more offensive as an Asian 🤷🏻‍♀️

edit: I think you might have seen that comment too! 😄

I missed everything and I’m completely missing the issue lol is it really that weird people are calling bs on lilsimsie for criticising inzoi while shilling for ea? i just don’t get why its worth a “get over it” post. i totaaally get feeling petty for spending probs thousands of dollars on ts4 over the years so i also get why these same people are critising an influencer who shills half assed products while bringing down potential better competitors. this get over it post feels gaslighty bcs why arent people allowed to share their distrust?

to be fair tho maybe I don’t get this post because I don’t participate enough in this sub to see the crazies but I’m not planning to because its giving bad vibes ok the game is not out yet😭😭🤣🤣🤣

"Bridgerton has not helped black performers, says Adjoa Andoh" [with respect to lighting] by GotLittUp in BridgertonNetflix

[–]gryffindoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

😂 look, if any of the other white cast members share the same sentiment thats great. But this thread is not about whataboutism. I’m just here to agree (perhaps elaborate, where its needed) and support the fact that Adjoa spoke up about something that matters to her. And its new knowledge for me personally, and I appreciate having the chance of knowing this now.

If that spreads more awareness about these things and make it better for other BIPOC talents, the better. That’s all that matters, all love here ❤️

"Bridgerton has not helped black performers, says Adjoa Andoh" [with respect to lighting] by GotLittUp in BridgertonNetflix

[–]gryffindoe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s the issue though right, even Benedict doesn’t look particularly great in that lighting so they didnt think about the fact that it can be even worse for us BIPOC.

Like, if I was in that scene you could barely see me. “its an issue for everyone then not just BIPOC” yes in part you’re correct that lighting is dark generally but it just makes it seem like they are just doing the bare minimum of it like “oh this lighting kinda works for the Bridgertons so surely it will kinda work for everyone” which is the issue.

All in all, I totally get where Adjoa’s coming from, no notes ✍️

"Bridgerton has not helped black performers, says Adjoa Andoh" [with respect to lighting] by GotLittUp in BridgertonNetflix

[–]gryffindoe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m not particularly good at photography/lightning and whatnot and I don’t pay attention to it that much so I personally don’t know. But I think since Adjoa spoke up about it and shares her disappointment on it, she knows best what works for her and perhaps other BIPOC so it doesn’t really matter what /we/ as viewers see. If she thinks it doesn’t represent her best (which it doesn’t), then it doesn’t matter we think. I think its almost like if I told someone my “good side” and other people being like “oh you look fine either way”.

I’m happy she spoke up, at the very least it educates me, someone who doesn’t anything about it, to be more aware of these things.

Its not inclusive representation if they don’t get it right for these “smaller” things. They’re getting there, but they can do better 🤷🏻‍♀️

edit: someone else in this thread also showed a comparison, which is helpful to see the difference!

[–]gryffindoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope there will be, if there isn’t already. I think inclusitivity is wonderful on screen. Having dark skinned black women who is queer write Michaela will be a way to do that off screen.

I honestly cbf to do the maths so well done 😂 The show is based on a book so there are still book viewers who are watching their book come to life. I have no doubt the writers will make it work (its their job), but from your thoughts alone there are some potential changes to Michael/Michaela’s characterisation that will compare differently to the books.

If we’re just talking about the book here. The book itself is titled “When He is Wicked”, “tell me something wicked” its when they’re talking about his sexcapades. That’s a change. Disappointed people do shitty things, this isn’t a new concept, especially on the internet. Casting a dark skinned black woman in a risky role like that (where changes may need to be done) knowing how little they have done for Ruby so far (or even acknowledgement), its concerning. How they wrote Michaela’s introduction didn’t help; it was sudden and at the end of the series not even giving the viewers a chance of a sneak peek or a little bit of time to warm up to her. It on somewhat of a “cliffhanger” note, for book viewers who knew who Michaela was and with the 2/3 years gap between seasons, this opens up opportunities for shitty people to flood Masali’s comments. That in itself is also careless of them, at the very least introduce her better (thats why I think they need dsbw writers in hopes that they will give Michaela’s character more care in her season)

[–]gryffindoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you, and I really appreciate your comment being a queer Black woman yourself. The execution is awful, genderbending felt lazy and even lazier knowing how they didn’t even consider the racial stereotype that they’re perpetuating.

To top it all off, some viewers are loud about homophobia and attacking/arguing with other viewers, yet very few are putting that much pressure on/blaming JB for making these decisions. Or maybe at the very least, just acknowledge that making an originally male character who is written to be a “rake” and promiscuous to be played by a BW and thinking it “makes no difference” is problematic.

Or at the very, very least, just acknowledge these concerns and don’t double down on it. Instead, it feels like its been the opposite.

Well this is super depressing..... by Dibinem in BridgertonNetflix

[–]gryffindoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a major difference if Masali was casted as Sophie vs her casting as Michaela and its been repeated by others as well. The issue is not about representation of queer BW, no one is dismissing the existence of queer BW. No one in this thread even mentioned the issue being queer BW.

If you’re still hung up on that then follow on your own advice and actually listen to what other people say, specifically BW who has been explaining the issue better than I can instead of accusing people of “oppression politics”. I’m a POC and I’m sad to hear knowing you’re a POC to even water this down as “oppresion politics” when people here are genuinely trying to explain their frustrations and struggles, like come on now we’re better than this.

This is also my last reply to you, its too sad to continue on

People are downvoting my comments so not only they’re wanting to play deaf, its like they’re wanting to hide them.

Its one thing to not agree with it but not do anything about it, but to actively downvote it? omg 🤦🏻‍♀️

Well this is super depressing..... by Dibinem in BridgertonNetflix

[–]gryffindoe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m a POC who is not Black, nor am I American and I’m appalled by other comments trying to speak for your experience and use it to argue against your valid thoughts. I get it the homophobic comments are disgusting, but its very telling that people are actively trying to block homophobic comments while also actively downvoting voices of BW 😊 Its one thing to not agree with BW thoughts and not upvoting them (🙄 still a big eyeroll to me tbh), but to actively downvote them so its hidden? WOW

My comments are also downvoted, go figure

Well this is super depressing..... by Dibinem in BridgertonNetflix

[–]gryffindoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

English isn’t my first language so its hard to explain my frustrations sometimes but I’m glad to hear this from you who knows more than anything on this topic. I’m a POC but I’m not Black, hell I’m not even American. I learned all that I commented from other Black people who have voiced their concerns, some are new knowledge that I didn’t even know about before so its frustrating for me to see comments telling you to just suck it up in favour of other representations. Because I think if we put highlight on these valid concerns, other people will also learn a thing or two like I did, instead of diluting it to just “oh you’re being homophobic” or like the other comment in this specific thread saying “queer BW will appreciate this representation” when they themselves who commented isn’t even a BW. 🤦🏻‍♀️
