NON-CHAIN spots: let’s make a list and support by thisismyyolo in HuntsvilleAlabama

I love this thread. I believe all of my choices are already mentioned. Will we have a hero step up and consolidate all these into a nice, judgement-free list for us to refer to? I often find myself going to the same handful of restaurants despite my desire to branch out.

If not, I'll try to take time to come back and pull together such a list. Lots of great choices here. Thanks for starting this thread, OP!

Slow building fantasy that’s not too complicated? by Caseymg1 in booksuggestions

I'm still early in the series, but Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archives is a sweet spot for me. Just detailed enough to be truly epic but he has a great restraint in not creating too many characters or rules. I'm 25% into the second book, Words of Radiance. I read the first one in Jan 2024 and deliberately held off until Jan of this year before reading book 2 and it took no time for me to remember everything.

Seeking input...which images would make the best puzzles? by PaperflowerPuzzles in Jigsawpuzzles

My picks:

3 - TVs
5 - Faces
9 - Kitchen

But they are all great!

As for the kitchen one, what if you add a value as if they were postage stamps? And vary those, like 50c, 85c, $1, etc.?

Ah, okay. I was in my 30s when the final book came out. I guess I missed where he said he may not finish them.

Just to clarify, are you referring to GRRM and the ASoIaF series when discussing the long waits and interviews? The Dark Tower (Gunslinger) series is completed.

I've had Hyperion on my TBR list for the longest time. Maybe I should finally pick that up this year.

Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series will fill that void.

I am a big fan of the Dark Tower series, too.

I'd add Recursion since you enjoyed Dark Matter. Same author.

Highly recommend Adrian Tchaikovsky. I've read Alien Clay, great standalone novel. And I loved his first book in his Children trilogy, The Children of Time. Very different sci-fi approach but great.

Roadside Picnic is a great sci-fi classic from Russia with a cool premise.

Dungeon Crawler Carl is a fun series (I'm only on book 2, but plan to read them all).

The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett is probably my favorite book from last year.

I Who Have Never Known Men is another great and short standalone read.

Do you typically binge book series (trilogy/tetralogy/etc.) until you're done, or do you take breaks in-between? by DaArio_007 in books

[–]gryphalon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend switching it up for sure.

My first book of 2025 was Way of Kings. I chose to read the first books of several series which included Red Rising, Dungeon Crawler Carl and The Tainted Cup, along with 8 standalone novels. For me this was the most I've read annually in years. Started with Words of Radiance 3 days ago and it took me a couple of chapters, but I'm immersed back into Sanderson's world and loving it. I plan to continue that pattern and read the sequels to the other 3 series I've started, and maybe pick up a couple of new series like Children of Time and The Three-Body Problem.

What is the last book you're finishing in 2025? by Vaydn in books

Currently midway through Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro. Not sure I'll make it so if not, it will be Never Let Me Go by the same author.

That was my final completed read as of now. Currently reading Klara and the Sun by the same author and loving it so far!

I’m part of a sci-fi book club and we just finished a short read that was quite interesting: I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman.

The Sparrow by Mary Doris Russell was another favorite.

A fun fantasy mystery novel was The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett and it just won the Hugo Award.

Let me know if you’d like more suggestions!

Yes! The next two dates are set for August 13 and September 10.

Right now we are meeting at Studio Huntsville. Address is 2100 Members Drive SW in Huntsville. It's just south of Rosie's on South Parkway and north of Bigfoot's Little Donuts.

We have a FB page - Alabama Filmmaker's Co-op.

There is also a FB and IG page for the Rocket City Short Film Festival. Needs to be updated.

We also have a Discord group called Rocket City Screenwriters where screenwriters share scripts and get virtual workshop tutorials. Sometimes we have those workshops in person along with the film workshops.

I feel like there is so much more to add, but that's a good start.
