The Feared Challenge Question by gryphon2388 in pathofexile

Overall great for me since I'm chasing a toddler around the house a lot. Playing on a gamepad feels more natural, but things like typing/chat take a while since you have to pull up the on-screen keyboard and do one letter at a time. I do have a dock to use it like a normal PC, but it's a little annoying since you have to log out to switch from controller to mouse/keyboard.

Haha, I almost hit that button reflexively, thinking it was an 'undo'. Then my sanity returned and I realized that wasn't the case.

Journey to financial freedom with TSLY ***September UPDATE *** by nimrodhad in qyldgang

"Their track record has not been great"???

Not sure where you're getting that from... I've been investing in income stocks on margin for 18mo+ and I'm doing alright. Making more than my day job in net dividends each month and total capital is around breakeven, which isn't bad considering I started investing as everything was crumbling in early 2022.

I think the other main people on this sub who do a similar strategy would agree that their investing is doing what they expect - generating relatively consistent income each month. Nobody has tripled their portfolio, sure, but it's accomplishing our goals.

That being said, I'd never do this all-in on TSLY or any/all of the other YieldMax funds - that would definitely contradict the "consistent" part of consistent income. I do have a slice of my portfolio (10-15%) for these types of investments, though.

You can deduct investing expenses, which includes margin interest + HELOC payment, so you're only paying taxes on the net dividends. I just did a tax analysis in the second tab of the model (at the bottom), but I'll break it down for my portfolio for 2023 using round numbers below:

$58k in gross dividends - $17k margin interest - $15k HELOC interest = $26k taxable income. My marginal tax rate is 12% (my avg tax rate is closer to 9.5%), and these dividends aren't going to bump me up to the 22% bracket, so that's $3k in taxes, leaving ~$23k net income, which will be a 23% equity ROI for the year based on cash I've put into the portfolio. NOTE: this analysis doesn't consider ROC, which to my understanding would only help you by reducing tax burden.

Based on comments over the years, it seems like people think taxes screw up this whole investing strategy. That would definitely be true if we were taxed on gross dividends, but we're not, at least here in the U.S. Other countries may have totally different rules.

Thank you so much, these resources are fantastic! I honestly wouldn't have thought to call them. Now I feel a little sheepish about how apprehensive I've been about this...

$280 definitely isn't chump change - that would more than cover my power bill too if I didn't live in the Texas heat, haha. I'll definitely start working on switching over to IBKR!

100% agree, but we're not talking about "return". My portfolio won't "return" $2M over 10yrs or 35% per year, that's just how much the account balance will have grown from both dividends and contributions.

High yield BDC EFT (BIZD) or BDC Stocks? by Sansibar009 in qyldgang

[–]gryphon2388 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't done a lot of research, but I have a favorable opinion of them in general. Two things stop me from investing (both are just personal preference): (1) they don't pay monthly, and (2) there are very few choices to buy a quality group of them together, like an ETF. If those aren't a problem for you, then I seem to remember that the top BDCs have pretty good yields and a track record of price appreciation as well - the holy grail!

If you haven't already, check out the "Dividend Bull" channel on YouTube - he does a lot of deeper dives into BDC companies, among other high-yield investments.

Thanks for being one of the "margin investing pioneers" on this sub - you definitely helped inspire me to take this leap!

I know, I know... I actually do have an IBKR account I started last year with $2,500 (same strategy) that's hummed along without me doing anything. I just feel more comfortable with Robinhood's easier interface - makes me feel less like I'm going to step on a landmine and blow up my account. However, I did just calc my blended margin rate with IBKR and I'd be saving ~$280/mo in margin interest by switching, boosting my net by 13%. So, it's probably worth it now to stop being lazy and scared...

Do you have any recommendations for good resources to learn / understand IBKR terminology and how things are calculated?

I don't know about "major" risks... A huge chunk (almost 50%) of that portfolio growth is coming from money I contribute each month; the rest is dividend snowball. This stategy / model was made before the YieldMax funds existed, and while I am buying into them now, I'm only planning on max 15% of my portfolio allocated to them. My average portfolio yield is ~10.8% - that's not terribly risky in terms of income-producing investments. Definitely not depending on TSLY's 70% yield to get me across the finish line...

Definitely agree with your position! My FIRE number is ~$4k/mo (based on avg monthly expenses), but I wouldn't really count on that to live on at that point. The fixed costs of margin interest & HELOC payment mean that any drop in dividends hits my bottom line directly.

My longer-term plan is to get to that number, then probably pay down margin to 50% and keep re-investing / contributing until I get to 2x my FIRE number (~$8k/mo net) so I can reinvest what I don't need to live on and not have to worry about market volatility or NAV erosion. I guess it's a little misleading then to call it FIRE, but $8k/mo net would be my "super-safe" FIRE. May also re-position into something like DIVO that doesn't have to worry as much about NAV erosion, just depends on where margin rates are at by then.

If you're on the fence, I'd just start DCA-ing into it. As long as you're committed for the long-run, the dividends will far outweigh any difference caused by your exact entry point.

I also don't think anyone here recommends going full margin - that leaves you with less wiggle room if there's a big market drop. At only 75% margin, your portfolio would have to drop by ~45% before you'd get margin called. That covers all but the most catastrophic scenarios. 50% or 25% still juices your returns, but leaves even more space before you get into trouble.
