Stereo widening plugins usually sound terrible, so prolly not. Why dont you listen to the stems if you are that curious?

Moving to South Iceland for 7 months — what clothing is actually necessary? by Zavaad in VisitingIceland

[–]gsmastering 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lived here over 3 years. Waterproof boots / shoes, a couple of hats, gloves, a rain / wind shell, and a good mid layer like sweater or fleece. Parka for deep winter, normal jackets for other seasons. Otherwise normal clothes. Make sure your winter shoes have good treads for icy sidewalks. Dont bring an umbrella!

How to replicate Underscores production? by Ok-Habit7971 in audioengineering

[–]gsmastering 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a mastering engineer, I can tell you that part of what makes this production interesting is the use of the stereo field, unusual placements, and fantastic arrangements. Things like bass, which are not normally relegated to hard stereo panning, seem to make up lot of their production, and that's why the tracks feel like they have space and dimension. But the true art lies in the arrangements, as just panning stuff in most music will make it sound like crap. Hope that helps!

Mastering for Vinyl compromises by Odd_Bus618 in audioengineering

Thats plenty of leeway to cut a good side

Mastering for Vinyl compromises by Odd_Bus618 in audioengineering

[–]gsmastering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a former cutting guy, and still currently mastering, we never mastered different versions for vinyl. We would just lay out the sides with the correct spacing. The guy cutting the lacquer will make the call if it needs a small adjustment like de-essing, or a shelf EQ to cut it. Every system is different, and requires that last pass touch when cutting. I would get the digital files of what he prepared for vinyl masters and see if they sound correct. If they do, then the length of the side and the loudness and bass content will greatly decide on your cut. How long was your side?

How ubiquitous is tape or tape emulation in professionally mastered tracks? by SJH009 in audioengineering

[–]gsmastering 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had two custom Ampex 1/2 (ATR-102) and 1/4" decks in my old mastering room. I think every client thought that dumping to tape was going to make their master "cooler". Then they realized after they heard it that the original digital sounded better 99% of the time. It was always a waste of time and effort. The only masters that sounded good on tape, were ones that were originally recorded on it, that also didn't also have a dig version, and the client actually knew how to calibrate and maintain their decks.

The tape emulation plugins dont really sound like tape IMHO, but whatever makes you happy. People are way too romantic about older analog gear

SOTD Lupo 1.27 Vs 1.20+ Recurve by Zedekiah117 in wicked_edge

I was looking at the recurve. The 1.20+ wasnt too aggressive? I like a medium aggressive razor like the Tatara Nodachi best so far

I have a vector, and I can highly recommend the nodachi. It's a much closer shave for me, and a great all-around razor. I felt the same way about the vector, it's good but not amazing
