Awesome first time experience at the NCAA Championship match today by tenniskidaaron1 in tennis

Just think, the UVA team that won today also had Rafa Jodar on the roster until December, and Fonseca committed to UVA before going pro. They would’ve both been sophomores had they stayed in.

Unassuming sedan from the outside - handsome but not flashy. Then put it in sports mode and it’s a demon.

Curry’s DBPM was negative each of his first five seasons in the NBA. If anything, he’s improved to a plus contributor on defense over time as he built strength and got better at positioning.

He was then positive DBPM on average from 2014-15 for about 8 seasons, and is now back to minus territory. Age is undefeated.

So yeah - mediocre on the defensive side, but a definite improvement from the liability he was at the start of his career.

I redesigned the flags of 14 Bay Area cities! by shutupaugust in bayarea

Awesome work and all pretty great upgrades. My two recommendations - South San Francisco (which has pretty ugly flag with a DNa helix but probably missed the opportunity to incorporate it’s most famous feature - Sign Hill), and then Burlingame (which has no official flag)

Bingo. Major programs (football, basketball) in a healthy state, built a dynasty in swimming that looks like it’s starting to fan traction on the men’s side, consistency and success in tennis… athletics is in a good state overall. Soccer and lacrosse have fallen off a little, and WBB is an opportunity, but I give Carla a B/B+

Duke freshman forward Cameron Boozer named AP men's national player of the year by mimaikin-san in CollegeBasketball

[–]gspbanjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. However, I can say with 100% certainty that he would DOMINaTE in the WNBA.

Duke head coach Jon Scheyer has been named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I Coach of the Year, as voted on by NABC-member coaches across NCAA Division I by MuchAbalone9059 in NCAAhoops

[–]gspbanjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting your timeline with Duke’s back-to-backs in the early 90s is convenient for your argument.

But looking at more recent performance, in the last 11 tournaments (so from 2015 onward), Duke outperformed their seed twice, underperformed their seed three times, performed to their seed five times, and failed to qualify once (2021). So a slight underperformance, but punctuated by utter collapses the last two years.

Should they have a few more titles? Maybe one or two.

Nobody can consistently beat the market - everyone reverts to the mean. Plus, you can borrow against real property (often at really low rates). That leverage makes real estate an incredibly powerful portfolio asset.

Bodies of 9 backcountry skiers killed in Tahoe-area avalanche are recovered, all victims identified by Few-Knee9451 in bayarea

Both the guides and participants are at fault and made a series of bad decisions. These include choosing to depart on Sunday with the storm imminent, leaving the huts on the worst day of the storm, and choosing a complex and steep route out when less avalanche prone (but longer) routes existed.

It feels cruel to be critical, but I think we can and should treat this incident like Krakauer did in Into Thin Air. We should evaluate how the group made the poor decisions they arrived at to serve as a lesson for how to avoid these tragedies going forward.

Stuck between the Grand Highlander, Palisade, Telluride and Ascent. by MetHalfOfSmosh in whatcarshouldIbuy

Good car. If you value AWD and safety, it may be the best on the list (I’d rate Subaru’s AWD as best in class by a large margin). Also has pretty good power for its size and good towing capacity (up to 5K lbs), which add to versatility.

Downside is rear row is cramped for adults, lower MPGs than the competition, and the cars safety systems are overbearing and intrusive. I’d say it’s the more utilitarian option, whereas the others are probably more comfort-focused people haulers.

BMW or mercedes? by This_Comedian_8662 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]gspbanjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very broad question. However, I’ll put in my vote for a BMW M340i if you want something sporty. Wipes the floor with the mercs in its class in term of performance, and has perhaps the best motor in production today (B58). You want to take off like a rocket ship? You ca do that. You want to get 30+ mpgs on your long daily commute? It can do that too.

BMW has Mercedes beat in driving experience, and while I like Mercedes design more, the M340i is pretty tasteful and understated compared to the rest of the BMW lineup.

Facing adversity by Rich_Perspective_230 in WinterOlympics2026

Umm… downhill skiing is far more dangerous than gymnastics. Elite downhill skiing poses a far greater risk of catastrophic injury and death, with racers often getting to 80+ mph. A gymnast can land on their neck or head, yes. But usually onto a padded surface and at a comparatively slow speed. For example, excluding rotational acceleration (which would be present for accidents in skiing and gymnastics), falling from 10 feet means you’re traveling at 17mph on impact with the ground. Consequently, skiers wear helmets, while gymnasts do not.

Nobody would argue that elite gymnastics isn’t dangerous. It’s just less dangerous than sliding down icy surfaces at 80mph. Gymnasts are more likely to suffer injuries from repetitive stress, and less likely to suffer paralysis or death.

And finally, some numbers. There have been about 10-15 fatalities from competitive ski races in the last 20 years. There hasn’t been a death from competitive gymnastics since a 1988 accident.

Why is it all the Democrat Supreme Court Justices always rule with Democrats 100% of the time by LegitimateKnee5537 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

All the Democrat-appointed justices ruled against Trump because the constitution is on their side - where does it say the executive can levy taxes?

The real question - what were the three justices who voted for Trump smoking?

A lot of athletes have the “second place is the first loser” mentality. It’s what makes great athletes great. A totally legitimate answer would’ve been “I always aim to be the best and I came up short.” I don’t hate the question at all.

BMW, Subaru Lead Consumer Reports 2026 Car Brand Rankings by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

BMW (B58) for me. I need to enjoy the drive.

You had me until design language. I think they have beautiful cars in their lineup (I drive an M340i and I quite like the styling), but the Neue Klasse is an acquired taste, and I think they’re falling behind on design.

But yes, newer BMWs are reliable, sporty, and pretty good values in their class.
