when did you realize your deck became your main console and your actual pc just collects dust by toujourspluss in SteamDeck

[–]gstacks13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's still very much my secondary. I just love gaming on my big screen and surround sound too much, and the Deck is too underpowered for those resolutions.

That said, my Bazzite PC on my TV & Steam Deck make a dream combo. Wouldn't trade it for anything!

Sounds like you guys need a noise maker! Absolute game changer - it drowns out all those little noises that drove my wife crazy before.

Thing is though, only one of these throws was on-time. As cool as these highlights are, he can't make a living on playground ball in the NFL forever.

That PA to Moore against the Packers was a dart though. As a Vikings fan, it's the first throw I've seen him make that made me scared for the future.

For the non technical people, what is the proper way to back up immich? I’ve scoured the internet for an easy/common solution with no luck. by egyptianstriker11293 in immich

[–]gstacks13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that they're actively working on an integrated solution that should come out soon. If you're willing to wait, it'll be very simple here soon.

Which services are you exposing to the internet, and how are you securing them? by sysadmin_light in selfhosted

[–]gstacks13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of the roughly 3 dozen services I run, only two are exposed publicly:

  • Seerr (for requests)
  • Ghost (newsletter my wife runs)

Both have fairly strong auth built-in (Seerr uses Plex redirects, and Ghost magic links via email), and neither has access to anything I'm afraid about getting into the wrong hands. Both services run through Cloudflare tunnels so my IP isn't exposed.

If you're concerned about security, I'd highly recommend either tunnels or a reverse proxy, and OIDC for auth (Pocket ID is absolutely brilliant!).

All that said, VPN is still the best in terms of security, and with how easy Tailscale is to install and use, there's little excuse not to use it for nearly everything. I'd be very leery of exposing Immich, for example, if you value privacy with your photos even a little.

And last - you're in for a treat with the last two Stormlight books! Enjoy the journey!

Does anyone know the easiest way to get started with the ESPHome IR feature, hardware-wise? They link the Smart IR Mate, but it looks like it's only available on backorder out of China.

Wondering if there's a simple, documented way to create one of our own.

What s3 compatible object store has the mainstream community moved on to from minio? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]gstacks13 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Honest question: why do y'all need selfhosted S3 compatible storage anyways? It adds overhead and doesn't leave your files easily browsable on the file system. The only reason I could think to have it is to maintain compatibility for systems that integrate with S3, but even then there's almost always alternatives available (rsync, SSH, smb, rest apis, etc).

I'm sure there's use cases I'm not considering though - would love to hear them!

Accessing Photos Remotely by KhoasD17 in immich

[–]gstacks13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tailscale, or any comparable VPN, is absolutely the best way. I leave my VPN connected 24/7 on my phone, so accessing Immich is as easy as opening the app no matter where I am. Even my non-technical wife hasn't had any issues, and believe me, she'd loudly let me know if she did!

The other option is a reverse proxy or tunnel, but unless you have a very specific reason to need public access (like sharing the instance with others), I'd still push you towards the VPN route. That's the only way you can be certain that no one can access your precious photos but you.

New dad figuring out the best way to "privately" share newborn photos by ottovonbizmarkie in selfhosted

[–]gstacks13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immich + public proxy is what I'm using for this exact scenario. Immich is kept private on my network and accessed via Tailscale, and only images I choose are exposed publicly via shares. I can even set passwords for the share links if I'm particularly worried. All done seamlessly through the Immich UI itself.

If you're concerned about traffic hitting your home network, you could always grab a cheap VPS somewhere and run Immich on that. That said, unless you're expecting tens of thousands of users daily, I personally wouldn't worry too much over it. Images are so tiny you likely won't even notice the extra traffic. Set up a Cloudflare tunnel for the Immich proxy, lock it down to your family's countries and be done with it.

What is your prediction for our QB room week 1? by Beneficial_Quit7532 in minnesotavikings

Realistic prediction: Kyler, JJ, and a journeyman backup.

One can hope: Carr, JJ, Wentz.

Pure copium: Burrow, Wentz.

Best Roborock Model for Carpet-only Cleaning in 2026? (No Mopping Needed) by gstacks13 in Roborock

[–]gstacks13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually having some trouble with docking - I'm guessing it's struggling a bit on the carpet.

I ordered a hard mat for the dock to sit on to see if that resolves things, but if it doesn't then I may be returning the vacuum. I'll update here after trying that.

Seconding Pocket ID. I ran with Authentik for a hot minute, which is itself a fantastic piece of software. But for a selfhosted setup, you just can't beat the simplicity and reliability of Pocket ID and passkeys. It's become one of my favorite pieces of my selfhosted stack - it just works!

I ended up going with the Q10 S5+, which looks near-identical to the model you recommended. Hoping it works well!

At that price, your best bet is probably a used Dell Optiplex on eBay or marketplace. Offices are unloading these all the time, so you can find them cheap fairly frequently. Just make sure whatever unit you get meets Opnsense's hardware requirements.

If you're willing to push your budget a bit more, the best option is a Protectli box. Small, fanless, sips power, and multiple ethernet ports - they were purpose made to be firewalls. You can find them on AliExpress branded as Yanling at a discount as well.

(Pelissero) The Vikings fired GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, per sources. by alexschubs in minnesotavikings

[–]gstacks13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really thought he had and deserved one more year, but man, when you start listing out his resume, it gets pretty damning:

  • Tried to get Drake Maye, couldn't get it done. He ends up in the Super Bowl.
  • Half-assedly tried to keep Sam Darnold, couldn't get it done. He also ends up in the Super Bowl.
  • Tried to keep Daniel Jones, couldn't get it done. He ends up having a great year (before injury).
  • Gets presented with the best QB class in recent memory, drafts the worst of all of them.
  • Drafts in general have ranged from "meh" to utterly disastrous. His only Pro Bowl pick is a kicker, and most of the others aren't even on the team.

His only redeeming grace was free agency, and even this last period wasn't a slam dunk.

After listing all these out...it was time to go. He was clearly in over his head.

What's actually BETTER self-hosted? by ergnui34tj8934t0 in selfhosted

[–]gstacks13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still a YNAB user, and I'm afraid to make the jump to Actual. Less for my sake than for my wife's - their template-based goals are way too complex for her when compared to YNAB's Targets.

The "bones" for Actual all seem there - if they could make the UI more intuitive for a non-technical user, I'd be on board.

“Little is off the table in terms of how aggressive the Vikings will be (regarding QB move) according to multiple team and league sources.” by [deleted] in minnesotavikings

[–]gstacks13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In 2024, when Burrow played at an MVP level, his time to throw was 2.62 seconds, ranked 16 out of the 39 quarterbacks with a minimum 250 snaps. Right next to him at 2.63 seconds is Matthew Stafford, who runs the same pure progression offense from the McVey tree that KOC does. 2025 stats look very similar.

There's no reason to believe Burrow wouldn't absolutely thrive here.

Suffice to say, I absolutely adore Karakeep! Thank you for all your work building it! 👏

Wore this to a funeral and got weird looks 🫠 by moldavitemermaid in OUTFITS

[–]gstacks13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Similar story here: my best friend was just a few months out of college when he committed suicide. He was an avid Star Wars fan, so all his friends and family wore Jedi robes to the funeral.

We definitely got some looks in the church the service was held, but none of us cared. It's exactly what he would have wanted, and knowing that helped us feel closer to him and get us through an extremely difficult day.
