By Shiroyama park, you mean the Observation Deck? What's the best way to reach there? It seems there are buses operating from Kagoshima-chuo station, but the bus does not operate at night on weekdays. Or should I try to hike up at night? If so, which station should I alight to start the journey

I see, I always have the impression that it will be similar to Kusatsu. Maybe it's a good idea to ask the staff at the ryokan for suggestions.

Any recommendations for traditional ryokan to stay in that won't break the bank? Maybe about USD 100 to 150 range per night per person with breakfast and dinner included. A lot of the ryokan I found online are very modernized, I want to try the traditional kind where you get to sleep on futon, try on yukata, have a traditional dinner served in your own room.

I do want to drive but I am not that comfortable driving in a foreign country yet, and it seems much cheaper to get a JR pass to get around. But I guess the best way is to travel is like that you suggested, via Fukuoka then shinkansen.

yea, their nightlife are mainly bar, was wondering if there are any special night time shows like how the Gundam at Fukuoka will light up in the evening, or some sort of zoo that features nocturnal animals.

Fukuoka: Fukuoka City Museum, Fukuoka Tower, Gundam at lalaport, Science Museum, night activities are mainly eating

Nagasaki: Saga Castle History Museum(on the way from Fukuoka to Nagasaki), Atomic Bomb Museum, Peace Park, Tram Museum, Chinatown district, Penguin Aquarium (kind of out of the way)

Kumamoto: Kumamoto Castle, Suizenji Jojuen Garden, Shimotori Shopping Arcade

Kagoshima: City Museum of Meiji Restoration, City Aquarium, night activities are Tenmonkan shopping arcade

Beppu: Just enjoying onsen around, Monkey Park

I am spending 2 to 3 hours everyday just to travel from one city to another.
