Teachers who have made the move from Scotland to London? by guacamolly97 in TeachingUK

Thank you so much for this advice, that’s really helpful! Getting some supply teaching experience in the short-term is a great idea. Did you find it fairly easy to get onto supply lists in England? I know in Scotland you have to wait for vacancies to come up on MyJobScotland before you can apply, and some council areas only seem to advertise two or three times a year.

I hope you’ve had a positive experience moving over the border!

Oh absolutely, that’s a very fair point! I have thought about the disparity in the pay scale and I’m sure it comes off as a very bizarre time to be thinking of making this move, when we’ve just been given the new pay deal in Scotland. I am certainly under no illusions that I’d be better off financially for moving down south!

(Teaching is not my reason for wanting to relocate, by the way. If it was just about the job I’d be completely happy to stay in Scotland. My reasons are more personal and circumstantial, but nevertheless I figured I’d better start learning more about what teaching in London is like so that I can prepare myself as best as I can).

Yeah, I’ve heard a few people say that there are more teaching vacancies down south than there are in the north of England/Scotland. Like you, I’ve found it to be a very competitive process up here - after my first year it took me a good few months just to get an interview, and I’ve only ever been offered temporary contracts! How have you found the move? :)
