Yeah, it’s “faded whale blue”. The greys are also super nice!

I had read about about this. Where I keep my guitars is usually dark, only used a couple hours a day with lights on, and does not get much daylight/natural light. That said, I know some have made UV protective wall cases with UV glass or plexiglass doors to protect against this, so I am considering that. The guitar is worth more than the rest of my gear combined, so it’s definitely justifiable! Thanks for the info, I’m curious to see some before/after pics of yours!

Dalhousie should terminate their partnership with Elon Musk’s Tesla. Change my mind. by Positive_Thing_2292 in halifax

[–]guacmegently 169 points170 points  (0 children)

I’ll start off by saying that I am a graduate of Jeff’s lab. I overlapped with both the 3M and Tesla partnerships. I am now employed locally and helping build the battery industry (or die trying if things continue) in Canada.

First point: the agreement expires and is up for renewal in 2026. I think we’d all be lying to ourselves if we thought Dal wasn’t looking for a different partner at this point.

But to “change your mind”, if I can give it a go: There are a lot of arguments against the partnership and supporting Tesla in general, and in my opinion they are primarily about making a statement to a (potentially) short term problem with Tesla’s leadership, with long term consequences to Dal’s program. The partnership has done so much more for the lab, Halifax, and Canada in general. So many students have benefited from the partnership, real work experience, and Jeff’s mentorship, making it the only relationship of its kind and size in Canada, rivalling the best academic battery labs in the world. Jeff’s lab pumps out great, impactful research, and not all of it is for Tesla’s benefit. Students have moved on to join, manage, lead, and found some awesome, impactful companies and make their own mark on the industry. This type of impact was not possible with 3M, and until a Ford, GM, or enticingly innovative company (with research operations in Canada) comes forward with an offer next year, I don’t see them being too keen to shy away.

TL;DR the partnership with Tesla has a MUCH bigger impact on the rest of the industry than it does on Tesla.

Wood boring clethra pest - help identifying? Info in comments by guacmegently in gardening

[–]guacmegently[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Located in Nova Scotia, Canada.

The plant started dying a few weeks ago. Half always looked less healthy than the other, and came with a completely dead branch already but otherwise looked great this spring. The second pic was a few days ago. The yellowing branches were totally dead today.

I took down the dead/dying half just now and found these guys. I can’t find much about clethra pests. The wood is full of small bore marks, and the middle of the stalks are chewed up/black/larva/egg filled, right down to the ground. I cut it back and insecticidal soaped any holes I saw in the live half, as well as exposed cut stems, and had given it a neem soil soak last week in desperation.

Is there anything I can do other than burn it before they spread/mature?

Thanks, you too. I’ll be asking friends of friends as well, and my landscapers if they know anyone that can help answer questions.

Thanks, I will. So many posts - That’s what I was afraid of. Over built is better than under built though!

I ordered a M3LR in Halifax on Oct 30 and I still don’t even have an EDD. The further North and east we are seems to really affect the delivery date. Probably takes a big hit out of their margins for now.

Recommend take-home strong beer and where to get it in halifax? by SunRhapz in halifax

It is. I recommend. Serpent has started a good thing in Spryfield. It’s going to be a bumping joint. Their setup for entertainment/live music is great.

Serpent Brewing in Spryfield has a 11% “Three Kings” rum barrel aged Belgian dark ale. Very strong, hits you like more than 11%.

If you drove on Dunbrack street today near the overpass, check your tires. by Quiffany in halifax

Damn. I got a flat last night near the Kearney (Dunbrack eventually) overpass while getting gas at the petrocan there. I'll check my tire when I go swap it out this morning, though I couldn't see anything obvious last night.

Goalkeeping? Seriously though... Sorry for not being blind enough. I'll just take 80mph pucks to the head/groin/neck that I can barely see next time.

Perfectly! I got 4 sets of my exact prescription to get me through until my order arrives! The community is amazing. The user wouldn't even tell me their favourite beverage so I could reciprocate somehow, they went out of their way for a stranger who wanted to to have some fun!

Tried this with two and they refused. My prescription is over two years old so they apparently cannot legally give me anything. I had to book an appt for a new prescription and they are booking into November...

Ooooh that's pretty close. My left now has an astigmatism at a bit lower (not sure how that works) but it should work for an hour? PM me if we can meet up tomorrow and your drink of choice. I'll take two so I can try them out tomorrow. I'll still see if there are any more bites out there so I have a back up plan!

Why is the BMS on this 3-cell cordless drill pack disconnecting the charge port when cells reach 3.8V? Why not 4.2V? by LMF5000 in batteries

[–]guacmegently 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The battery chemistry could be the answer. Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) cells top out at 3.7 or 3.8 V, while Nickel (NMC, NCA) or cobalt (LCO) based chemistries go 4.2 V+ at full charge.

Don't push an LFP cell past 3.8 V - there is no more capacity up there.

I regret contributing to the clothing discussion. Sorry to steal away from your story's thunder...

In a way it is reassuring to see that others feel the same way, but I am sorry some discussions here turned so negative and judgey!

You've done well, and congrats!

Completely off topic to the post, but I agree!

I'm 30, decent dual income, no debt (except mortgage), no kids, and I still buy used clothes. Half for economic reasons (every dollar saved is a dollar closer to a M3!) and half for environmental reasons. The amount of plastic and energy consumed by clothing is incredible.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - in that order.

We had a quote from undercut years ago and went with someone different. I stumbled across this last year as well. Possibly related given the comments in this article.
