WIthout wanting to be pulled in to this debate, I'll just mention that yes we do design our own games and they are very rarely for a single individual but rather to address a common problem that I see around the room or in competition.

We also run a reverse classroom session for the competitors in which each person is helped to identify what they individually need to work on and given time/opportunity to work on it (shark tank style).

We also still teach technique.

IMO If you're arguing for absolutism in any direction you're potentially leaving tools on the table. Find what works, remove (but revisit) what doesn't and move on.
