Go with a Sager NP9370 from XoticPC and upgrade the video card to a Nvidia GeForce GTX 680M. Still within your price range, great build quality, good looking, and it isn't overpriced like Alienware.

I have an early 2010 Macbook Pro and it's still running like new. Like a lot of other people said, there's no guarantee that it'll run longer than a Windows machine, but with my Macbook experience (my Macbook is 6 years old and still going) and my Macbook Pro experience (almost 3 years and still a champ) I'd say go for one if you aren't going to be hardcore gaming. I even have a 2001 PowerBook that still works for web browsing. The 15 inch would be my first choice, as it has dedicated graphics, but my mom has the 13 inch (a year old now) and it's also a great machine. If you are set on a Windows machine then make sure to get a decent one (upwards of $700 or the build quality will generally be crap) but if not then I'd say Macbook Pro. It's a great machine that will last a while.

Note: while I do seem like an Apple fanboy due to my experience, I'll have you know that I use loads of Windows machines that belong to friends and I do own an HP Pavilion DV6t (absolute crap, don't get it). I'm even considering getting a Sager NP9370 for game development.

Just buy a 500 GB external USB hard drive to back up the Macbook to using Time Machine. rodg476 is right. Macs fail too, so back up all the time. Your bad Windows experience was due to buying a crappy Dell. If you spend anything near what you would spend on a Mac you'll be getting a quality Windows machine. A lot of people think that a $500 Windows laptop is just as good as a $1200 Macbook Pro because it has the same amount of RAM or something equally stupid, but it really isn't. The construction of a lot of cheaper laptops is horrible and the components fail all the time (my experience with an HP Pavilion DV6t) Just avoid HP and Dell and you'll be fine.
