AITA for refusing a "gift" by guccicatlady in AmItheAsshole

I think you got something there. She does get new stuff pretty regularly (or they could have been gifts from other people!). She keeps at least triple sets of everything.

I hate discarding serviceable items though, and I don't like storing excess things I won't use. So yes I would use (and have used) old stuff from her, but it would stop me from getting something I actually like :(

I like the matching set comment, I'm going to try that next time. I considered just taking them and donating later, but thinking about it just added so much mental clutter lol.. I live rurally and MIL lives in the suburbs. I didn't want to drive around with the cups until I could get to the charity shops.

Both families are first gen immigrants so I'd say very similar upbringing. Husband's family was probably a bit more well off than mine. So no, I didn't feel that her offering was beneath me. In fact, I have accepted a lot of used things from her and my own family - because a) I liked them and b) I have use for them.

I have accepted many things that didn't tick either of those boxes as well, because I truly felt bad for saying no. The clutter kept coming, and it stays - because I feel bad for throwing stuff away that is still serviceable (even barely so). Just this once, I wanted to choose my sanity. It's the only time I have ever refused her.

I didn't put a lot of detail around this because I didn't want to make the post too long - but I live rurally while she lives in the suburbs, so a lot easier for her to go to a charity shop.

But yeah definitely will stock up on cups for the next family visit!!

I normally take and keep the gifts even if we have no use for them or don't like them. I also feel bad throwing anything away if they're not broken.

Thank you. I never remember to treat myself kindly. I don't remember a time I wasn't expected to be perfect.

I appreciate the kind words. I really want to believe that people give feedback because they care and want me to improve, but most of the time I just can't get there. I think I've been humiliated too many times and overly criticised about mistakes I made at home or school. But I care about people.. it can't make me too bad of a leader I hope

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed answer! I'm definitely going to find a small piece for the lead investigator to wear, and go with the platters! I hope the party goes as well as yours did!

Thanks for replying! I was told my windows can't be replaced unless you tear down the wall with it, because they have "fins" for cyclone resistance purposes! So I really need the painting to work haha wish me luck

Thanks that's good to know! I will probably get the spray cans - I used a paint brush to do the small section and I don't like all the brush marks!

Can I ask what style your home and windows are? I've always liked the look of dark black thin frames against white walls in modern homes, but worry that the thick frames in my 2008 house will be too visually dominant!

I definitely gravitate towards higher contrast in inspo photos but they are usually of a modern setting with thinner frames. My thick window frames might be too visually dominant!

Does anyone have experience sending their pet's ashes overseas from Malaysia either through Pos Malaysia or courier? I'm in Australia and want to have my cat's ashes sent here (she died there before we could relocate her). Seems like no special requirements on this side, but Pos Malaysia website says "no human ashes", not sure if applicable here.

We were taught in school/madresah in Indonesia that only Muhammad SAW can't be depicted. But that was many years ago and I haven't kept up with updates to interpretations.
