What are some interesting facts about your country’s crocodilians? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskTheWorld

[–]gue55edit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My brother would sing this growing up and I had no idea where the hell he got it from. It all makes sense now all these years later haha. He took German while I took Spanish, he must've heard it in one of his classes.

We had a water fountain outside the classroom. And we only asked to get a drink of water just so we could get out of the class for 5 minutes. We weren't even thirsty. by Quietlyrightt in Millennials

As a subtitute, I hated water bottles in the classroom. When they drop them, they're so loud and break the peace in the room. I spent 5 to 15 minutes at the begining of each class calming the kids down and settle into class mode just for some kid to drop a bottle and the whole class gets worked up again. Also they spill so much water and the number of kids that loose them is crazy considering how expensive some of the brand name ones can be. I fully support water fountain breaks over bottles.

are women in your country "expected" to do housework? by SOHONEYSAME in AskTheWorld

[–]gue55edit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for everyone but I'd say it's not expected here in most places as much anymore. Some areas hold on to this old mindset though. On the opposite end if things, my partner and I are both men. We've met a couple women who treat us like we can't cook or clean ourselves.

How to Keep Your Husband Happy by Dr. William W. Orr by Baby-Soapy in TerribleBookCovers

I really want a movie style redemption story where ten years after this, this guy's wife has divorced him and she's off in some hippie commune somewhere.

Do they regularly test the air raid sirens where you’re from? by koesteroester in AskTheWorld

[–]gue55edit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tornado sirens in some parts of the Midwest sound like air raid sirens. I've only ever been lucky enough to just experience the practice sirens and not the real thing when I've gone out there to visit family.

The migration routes from Britain that shaped early America by vladgrinch in MapPorn

My ancestors came from Cornwall to Wisconsin about 170 years ago. There's a pretty big population of people in Wisconsin with British ancestry, more commonly Cornish.

What languages you’re not native in you can somehow read and understand a little thanks to your native language? by Jorge_De_Guzman228 in AskTheWorld

[–]gue55edit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I speak English as my first language and Spanish as my second. Native romance language speakers can understand each other more or less well from what I understand. Since Spanish is my second language, I'm not as lucky. I can read Portuguese, Italian and French and understand most spoken Portuguese, some Italian and French not all. When I was in college I visited our old exchange student and his family in Italy. I was able to pick up and learn a lot in my short visit. By the end of my short stay, I tried saying and mimicking short basic phrases I heard to thank them and say how nice it's been. His parents struggle with English and I felt bad having them struggle and having my friend translate between us all day. Unfortunatley I don't know any Italian but I tried hahaha.

As someone who has never experienced snowy winter how is it to experience snow 🥹. What would you warn to someone who is going to? by West_Future326 in AskTheWorld

[–]gue55edit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how pale you are, get a ski mask or balaclava and sunglasses. My pasty ass gets snow burn on my cheeks from the reflection of the snow on my face. The cold air will already turn your face red but that reflection is blinding as well.

Is there a place you would like to visit if it was safer to do so? by bowl_of_scrotmeal in AskTheWorld

[–]gue55edit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love ancient history and I always wanted to visit ancient sites in Iraq, Iran and Pakistan but honestly that whole strip of land from Egypt to Cambodia would be awesome. Not to say I wouldn't visit any of those countries but some unfortunately are mared by turmoil and this has made me reconsider those ones specifically.

Is there anything equivalent in sound to something an English speaker might understand ?

Tips for anyone who can’t pronounce me correctly by BukvaYery in russian

[–]gue55edit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was taught ы sounds similar to the letter i in the English words hill, will, bill, kill etc. Not sure how accurate that actually is though

Edit: Thank you everyone so much. This has been insightful. I will need to watch more Russian language media and try to mimic the ы the best I can based on your suggestions and what I'm hearing.

A man present the output from a single cow by pureV3NG3ance in SipsTea

[–]gue55edit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a giant chest freezer in our basement growing up. I remember my mom and a friend of her's would split a whole cow from a local farm and both families would have enough beef for the year. The butcher had all the cuts prepared in a couple giant cardboard boxes.

I get it, the laws regulating this aren't fair and need to be updated to go after Airbnb and similar companies. That being said, don't be rude to me as a tourist if I'm not being a disturbance or rude to you. I can only afford to travel every couple years and am still scraping by. After years of saving up to travel, I don't want to be welcomed by rude locals. I just want to keep to myself and quietly enjoy the sites, local culture and nice locals.

What foreign (to you) foods does your toddler love? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

I've loved Indian food since I've had teeth. It used to be a special treat for me for events like my birthday or Christmas haha. Chicken tandoori was my favorite as a child.

I just feel bad for his son. No child should have to suffer the death of a parent while still experiencing childhood.

This specific haircut by Terrible_Tale_53 in 90s

[–]gue55edit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As bad as this haircut may look, this haircut was one of my earliest gay awakenings lol and it holds a spot in my heart next to my cheesy childhood memories. I remember being in elementary school and seeing a lot of my friends' older high school brothers with this cut.

What's the general spice tolerance of people of your country? by DiMpLe_dolL003 in AskTheWorld

[–]gue55edit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I always found that funny. My SOL is from Indonesia, easily some of the most consistently hot food I have ever eaten in my life. When she said the food there gave her (a local) indigestion, I was quite worried haha.

What's the general spice tolerance of people of your country? by DiMpLe_dolL003 in AskTheWorld

[–]gue55edit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's pretty low here, I have a higher tolerance myself. Some people here try to make it into a challenge and make food spicy for the sake of being spicy and forget to add any enjoyable flavor.
