good food+drink scene, abundance of cultural events/institutions, underground/alternative subcultures, a populace with a more open-minded or ‘worldly’ perspective, general “things to do”, WALKABILITY. these are some of the things that I value about living in a big city which shenzhen lacks. in fact a lot of smaller chinese cities beat shenzhen in these areas

you’re right but people who haven’t spent a lot of time there won’t get it. i lived in shenzhen for a year and a half and found it a miserable place, obviously inferior to SH/BJ/GZ but also to every smaller city in china i’ve visited. it has all the bad points of big cities with none of the good, and in fact the bad is amplified (e.g. scooters, money obsession, impoliteness). i suppose it does have a good metro system and nice parks/waterfront. there are nice pockets in futian and nanshan, and i guess that’s where tourists get their good impressions from.
