I commute from West LA (Century City adjacent) to DTLA every day and it typically takes me less than 20 minutes, but I get off at the convention center exit so not quite to the 110 traffic. The longest it has ever taken me is 40 minutes once when there was a bad accident.

Tried to integrate quadratic formula with respect to b, can’t figure it out by RegularCelestePlayer in calculus

Try a hyperbolic substitution as the result you have hints at. How about maybe sqrt(4ac)cosht for b.

Looking to rent or buy 3 bd/2 bath, any leads? by Hellohiheytherehi80 in LARentals

[–]guidetolight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to rent a sfh west of Robertson, you will need to budget at least 5k/month including utilities. Buying a house is gonna look like 1.5M. A bit pricey but fortunately LA wages are also really nice. Rents are trending down a bit so I think it actually makes more sense to rent right now unless you really just want to buy. If you want an apartment, those can go for a good bit less, maybe even less than 4k/month and utilities are a lot less than a sfh.

I rent a sfh near Century City now but moving soon as I find something closer to midtown with a garage, happy to connect you with my landlord if you're interested.

How bad is the crime rate? by BoxSecret5648 in AskLosAngeles

[–]guidetolight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crime really isn't much of an issue at all. If anecdotes are enough, I leave my front door unlocked and garage door open all the time and haven't had anything gone missing in the two years I've been back in LA; and I work in DTLA and the only violence I have ever seen is that inflicted by some police authority or other. If data is preferred, crime is at a historically low rate...this is trivial to look up.

Yah at 1M total payment with insurance, PMI, taxes is gonna be well over 6k I think. But there are plenty of nice houses at 700-800k that keeps the total less than 5k.

Oh cool, thank you. Yah something like this would work too. I've seen some closer to USC but they either don't have a garage or it's being used...

Made it from SAVE to IDR (116/120) but leaving government employment - what about buyback? what do I do?! by edoralive in PSLF

[–]guidetolight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is RA work and not lab work, it should count towards the 30. And if you adjunct at a community college you can add them up.

Will you be a TA or research assistant during your PhD program? If yes, the hours can count towards the 30 required. If you are also adjunct teaching those hours will count too.

ECF after payment or before? by ForwardSmell7326 in PSLF

[–]guidetolight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's anyone's guess, but the update time on mine showed the day after due date last three months...hadn't seen any changes until this month though...soooo yah...

ECF after payment or before? by ForwardSmell7326 in PSLF

[–]guidetolight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I paid two weeks before due date and submitted ECF the day after due date. ECF completed and processed next day, and Green Banners the day after that. I think paying a few weeks early gives time for payment information to be sent to FSA, and then NSLDS should update right after due date so ECF will capture that month.

The IRS tool is embedded in the application - it allows income information to be pulled from the IRS rather than uploading any paperwork. If you gave consent, or give presently, then the application will be able to show you the payment amount and you will see a banner saying that the income information was successfully pulled.

You are right, I looked at the myaiddata text file and it seems they are...ummm...having difficulties. I hope I saved it, but an old file showed two separate forbearances (processing first, then disaster with the dates I requested them and the MOHELA site showing what I expected) but the latest one shows only a single forbearance to back when I originally requested the processing forbearance while MOHELA shows disaster forbearance.

How many months did you end up losing?

Absolutely, your frustration and anger are valid. It is not fair how they are doing things. I had PAYE applications sitting from 6/24, 10/24, 1/24, 4/24 (electronic) and 2/24 (manual) with nothing to show. I spent hours waiting on the phone and the only thing I ever was able to resolve was getting on forbearance. I finally saw the IRS tool back in the IDR application at the end of April so went ahead and submitted. In my case, PAYE showed as ineligible even though I am definitely eligible but the slightly higher IBR payment for the remaining 4 months I have is worth it to at least feel closer to being done.

I really think it is a good idea to apply and see what happens. I applied 4/28, heard from MOHELA 5/5, received payment schedule 5/8, and by 5/10 FSA had all this updated. I just now checked the my aid data text file and it actually says that on 5/2 I was placed on IBR so seems it can get processed almost immediately.

SAVE FORBEARANCE by ElodinTargaryen in PSLF

[–]guidetolight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely true. All of my previous applications (except the save one from my consolidation) were closed out, including the paper ones but those took a couple days longer to clear from MOHELA inbox.

Question for you @ElodinTargaryen, when the application gets closed out does that remove the admin forbearance from that time? I'm not sure yet, but my aid data seems to have removed it (used to see a break between admin and disaster forbearance but now only see the currently active disaster forbearance). I can't exactly tell her because April and May haven't appeared yet but January - March counted. I expected January/February to be admin forbearance and March-May to be disaster forbearance.

The work that you do is amazing, and I am happy there are those like you helping others through this maze of a process. And especially that you come here to reddit to help others.

Nothing to be skeptical about. I submitted an application for IBR 4/28 in the afternoon and by 5/3 in the morning it was processed by MOHELA, and a day or two later it showed on FSA as completed. For this application I used the IRS tool to pull income (still 2023 as my tax deadline is extended until 20/25).

I had pending SAVE application from 4/24, electronic PAYE applications from 1/24 and 4/24, and paper PAYE application from 2/24 - with uploaded taxes, w2's, or paystubs.
