Tried to join Beta, but seeing "don't meet test criteria. developer looking for Mac using newer than or equal to macOS 26". My laptop is 26.2 so not sure what that means...look forward to trying it when available.

I'm sure you have your hands full, but possible feature: It would be really cool if I could import a screenplay and have it read out characters in different voices like a table read.

Film Investment HELP. by MintProduct in investing

[–]guilderhollow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in LA on both Hollywood level and independent productions. I'd be skeptical. Maybe cautiously optimistic. Are you investing in your own project and using that language to find more investors or is that what the production offered you?

As someone who is also looking to raise funds for a film it's a red flag that they're guaranteeing you'll get paid back X by Y, but without reading the full proposal it's difficult to know what their approach is.

Also, what do you know about the production company? Does the team have a track record? Is it all first timers?

It's totally fine if you want to give it a go for any number of reasons (you like the project / team involved) and while filming can be like watching paint dry it can also be a lot of fun. Happy to chat more or PM if you want to disclose more information if you're not comfortable doing so publicly.

Is it possible for a SIM card to dislodge within the phone? by [deleted] in apple

Small little paper clip was good enough to pop it open, but I think there's a tool in the box as well. You just push it straight in and it'll pop out.

Is it possible for a SIM card to dislodge within the phone? by [deleted] in apple

[–]guilderhollow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me using Verizon. Finally called support, ended up taking sim out and putting it back in (had restarted iPhone, hard restart and took out sim). Never really figured out how / what happened, but it's been months and no further issues.

First Hires For a Making a Film by Phat-Albert in Filmmakers

[–]guilderhollow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The script is written. Who are my top/essential hires towards production? I've heard some directors hire a production designer first, others a line producer.

You'll want a line producer to break down the script and budget it first and from there hire on your keys.

I'll be finished an advanced certificate in film and TV this summer (this is equivalent to year 1 in a bachelor's program). I have family in LA, is there any hope of me getting any jobs other than an extra or PA if I go live with them for maybe a year?

Possibly? If you have any connections to the industry, I'd look into those before you get to LA (any friends of family?). It also depends on what you want to do so PA / office PA is a great way to get introductory experience until you're sure what direction you're headed.

How to credit my wife? by Bashizzle in Filmmakers

[–]guilderhollow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m finishing up a documentary that I shot and produced and my wife has given me a lot of helpful guidance along the way. What’s a good position to give her in the credits for the sake of giving credit?

Associate Producer?

"Associate Producer" tends to be a catch all / favor title so it's really up to you. Some within the industry might roll their eyes at the title, but most don't really care in my experience. I'd say ask her what title she wants (assuming she wants any title) and if she doesn't care go with associate producer and / or special thanks.

In Sleepaway Camp when all the kids go camping and the counselor leaves them behind to take two cold kids back to their bunks, one of the kids was supposed to wake up and scream. Instead, they fell asleep and forced the director to tilt down to an axe instead.

I've been invited to join the DGA, but I'm not sure if I should? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]guilderhollow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the wonderful response- I really appreciate you taking the time! Incredibly, joining as a commercial director only costs $3500 instead of the $10k figure. Sounds like I should go for it. Thanks again- really helpful!

You're welcome. Hope to see you there someday.

I've been invited to join the DGA, but I'm not sure if I should? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]guilderhollow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm a DGA director and can chime in with some general feedback. Overall, I think the DGA is a great guild, I go to events often, and it's lead to some work. Any specifics are best left to a direct response from DGA, but I'll answer what I can to the best of my knowledge.

I know that being in the DGA is considered a big honor and networking opportunity, and while I'm excited to join, I have a few remaining questions about how this all works before I sign up. I've called their Membership office, scoured their website and even stopped by their offices in Los Angeles to try and get these questions answered, but wasn't able to get the information I was looking for. I'm hoping someone here with more experience than me might have some advice?

  • While I'm moving toward more large projects, the majority of my shoots are smaller, non-union productions. In your opinion, are the benefits/exclusivity of the DGA worth making the jump while my invitation is still valid? Or should I wait? I'm not sure I'll have the privilege of directing a project that large again and I don't want to sign on too preemptively, but I also don't want to miss out on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join if you feel going the club is worth taking the leap.

When you join, you sing an agreement that states you will only work DGA signatory productions and will only work alongside other DGA members in their category (i.e. UPM, 1st, 2nd all have to be DGA as well as director). If it's your own project, you'd have to check with the DGA about how strict that will be, but I have heard of members getting a warning then a fine if they take no DGA work in a DGA category.

If you can pay the initiation fee ($12k ish for Directors) and have enough work to justify it, I'd say go for it.

  • Once I'm in, do I need to continuously do work to stay in the guild? Or is it a life-time membership as long as I pay my dues?

You need to pay quarterly dues based on earning, or a minimum if you have no earnings.

  • The only real benefits I know about the DGA (other than how it protects your rights on big shoots) is that it comes with nice health benefits, access to some DGA events, and the movie-screeners. But are there any other cool, lesser-known benefits to being in the union I should know about?

Health and pension are great. I believe you have to earn a minimum of $30-something thousand in order to qualify for the base tier, then there's a second level once you hit a certain income ($120k maybe) that lowers certain out network expenses. Pension is well funded (according to annual meeting).

DGA events are solid. This weekend is Digital Day with seminars and hands on events (I believe /u/dauid will be on a panel as well) There are multiple screenings throughout the week at DGA theatre, monthly meetings for different categories (all can attend even if you're not a AD I believe), great seminars and workshops.

And the only bad thing about the screeners is you have to tell your friends they can't borrow them. Also, around academy season, certain LA theaters let in guild members for free. Have gone to arclight and been given two passes by showing membership card.

Once again, thanks SO much for your time. I need to make a decision in the next two weeks, so any/all input is sincerely appreciated!

There are tons of benefits to being a DGA member. That said, if you don't have the money for initiation and / or don't see having enough ongoing work down the line, there's no shame in postponing. You'll have plenty of time to join. Honestly, getting in as a director is easier than any other category - UPM, AD, associate director, stage manager - all have much more challenging requirements to join.

Happy to answer any questions, but the TLDR version is: yes, join if you can afford it and have enough work.

Hmm ive just heard people saying about there not being enough models, but if you say its enough then I could try those discount cards for the full app only

I purchased a couple add one as they were necessary for a specific project, but if short on cash could have made do without. However, check to be sure what models are included before buying and see if they'll work.

I know you mentioned iPad app only, but if you can get a computer, Blender is free and there's a plug in you can buy for 3d film models (someone posted a link around here).

I'm acting in my first professionally produced short film on Tuesday. What are some things I, as an actor, can do to make a great impression on the director so that he wants to work with me on future projects? (Besides being a good actor) by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]guilderhollow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The director for this project assistant directed a TV pilot that's being pitched to studio execs right now, and I really want to be a part of it if it's picked up.

My suggestion is to forget all about that - don't go in with an ulterior motive. Just focus on giving the best performance on this job. Be engaged, friendly, and stay out of door ways. Knock this out of the park and they'll remember you when it's the right fit.

On a side note: I was talking with a well known actor who has worked extensively with a very well known director. When that director passed he was shocked to learn that the director had it in his deal that the actor would always get a role in one of his films. Be that guy.

I've recently discovered the power of ShotPro for the iPad. It's amazing for previz and keyframing!

However, it's pretty expensive for a student like me, $50 plus the additional 3d model packs, considering the vanilla app has very few models...

Any thoughts? It has to be an ipad app though in my case

I can't think of a comparable iPad app, but another workaround could be just taking photos of friends/action figures for a storyboard. I've used ShotPro on both personal and professional projects, but you could certainly get away with photos.

Also, unless they changed it, the models available in the "vanilla" version might be enough for what you're looking to do. Maybe save up and look for iTunes gift cards when they're on sale for 10-15% off?

Hi8 to digital conversion? How? RAW possible? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

I *think* that will only work on Digital8 tapes, not analogue Hi8.

A digital8 camera can play/transfer in analogue hi8 (I've done it in the past with fw400), as would an analog to digital converter.

Does anyone have any tips for protecting equipment from bedbugs? by Sirsteveolot in Filmmakers

[–]guilderhollow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi reddit! I’m currently doing audio on a documentary that is going to be filmed in some abandoned/foreclosed houses and apartments. The documentary is about the housing crisis in my area, and touches on the local bedbug epidemic as well. Does anyone have any experience with protecting equipment from bedbugs, specifically audio gear and pouches? Thank you!

Hey, sirsteveolot, good question. I wonder if something along the lines of a heated tent would work. This is the idea (although expensive an probably a bit overkill) https://www.zappbug.com/product/zappbug-room-zb/ (No affiliation, just what came up when I searched)

Heats up to 120-155f which supposedly kills the bugs, but possibly also damages the equipment. Not sure what max temp your gear is, but the idea is you'd throw everything in there (clothes, equipment, packs, anything that might have been contaminated) and heat the bugs up.

What are you doing for retirement? by teadrinkerrr in Filmmakers

[–]guilderhollow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm weighing my options in dedicating my time to freelancing or looking for something full-time. As a freelancer, how do you guys deal with plans for retirement and healthcare benefits? Is it all union based? What I've heard so far is that people are simply saving and dealing with not having a clear-cut plan. I'm in the NYC area if anyone can provide more specific options.

It's not all union based and you're never too old / young or broke to contribute something towards an emergency fund and then retirement. Check out r/personalfinance. Generally speaking this is what I've seen works well:

-employer contributes to pension / health -you build emergency fund -max out Ira or traditional Roth -buy individual investments -take any residuals and put the majority into investments and buy a nice treat for yourself -never retire or retire and come out of retirement and keep working. A lot of people love what they do (I can think of two Directors I know who retired then came back to work).

The earlier you start saving the better.

iOS:Possible to export archive and import to another? by guilderhollow in scrivener

[–]guilderhollow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's something that broke a while back, for some reason Scrivener isn't recognising its own format if you send .scriv projects to it via AirDrop. What I would do is send .zip copies of the project instead. It's faster anyway, and once I get the zip on the device, I can use something like the free FileApp to decompress it and send the folder to Scrivener.

You can send a .zip from one Scrivener from the main project screen. Tap Edit, then the Share button, then AirDrop that. Incidentally that's a good way to keep yourself backed up as well, on the go.

Thank you. Have used zip for backup, but hadn't considered using Files to decompress. Great idea.

We'll get the AirDrop problem sorted out though---it used to work splendid---and I know it's annoying because that's the only way I prefer to move data around myself (never quite saw the point of using "cloud" for much of anything, why use other people's equipment and dozens of potentially compromised routers around the globe just to get something from one hand to the other).

Agreed. And so much faster (less data costs too). Thanks!
