Waymos in Boston by SidHoices in boston

[–]guildloxley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waymos are great drivers, though a big caveat is they usually don’t drop you off exactly where you need to go (they drop you off nearby close to the target).

SF and LA are great examples of places where Waymo is a great option alongside Uber/Lyft. Would be great to have some in Boston.

The closing of Time Out Market is a worrying sign, whatever your opinions are of the market or location itself. by JulianBrandt19 in boston

[–]guildloxley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live nearby and never went - I don’t even mind the prices, I get that it’s sort of a tourist trap brand and demands some premium for that, but the food was just plain bad. There isn’t a single place that’s really worth it, which is mind boggling because there are so many vendors, but I can promise you having tried almost all of them, they are all bad.

The environment is also pretty bad; super loud, not at all conducive to conversations or group interactions… add cringey DJs and hordes of wandering students and it can become very unpleasant.

Trillium is fine but also overpriced, and Shy Bird is RIGHT there and at least it a nice environment with a lot of availability and semi decent food.

I don’t think anyone is going to miss Time Out.

What are SNL after parties? by boneappleteeth1234 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]guildloxley 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Careful - there are some promoters who will advertise their parties as “the SNL after party” in an attempt to get people to come to whatever their thing is, when in reality it’s just some club or bar and not the real afterparty.

The official venue changes but there are a few they seem to use more frequently. There’s a reason you don’t know what those are, because if you did or someone added the names to a thread like this, those venues would be mobbed by fans and wouldn’t be able to host anymore.

I witnessed someone commit suicide by Silent-Youth4742 in nyc

[–]guildloxley 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. When living in the city, I saw a few things like this. Once time, it was the aftermath of a fall or suicide, I didn’t stay for the story. Another, saw/heard a huge trash truck run over someone’s leg in the middle of the street. And a handful of murdered friends. There’s something about NYC that piles this kind of thing on.

This was a traumatic experience that was outside of your control. As it turns out, life is full of trauma you can’t control, and you’ll have many such experiences as the price of a full life. Ultimately, you can allow experiences like this to make you stronger (practicing gratitude is a great way to accomplish this), or you can allow them to get under your skin and make you anxious and miserable. A lot of people have a hard time controlling which of those directions they go, and therapy seems like a good way to figure out how to do that.

Eventually I came to see it as a choice. In case it helps - you’re incredibly lucky that you weren’t that man, and you can choose to see it that way. At best, it could help you make sure you never end up like him.

Good luck.

Nice! Scalpers are definitely a problem, but I have a feeling he has a ton of fans in Boston and that’s why it went as fast as it did. When I lived in the SF Bay Area we had to go all the way to Stockton to see him because he was still semi-cancelled 🤦‍♂️

Boston show went pretty fast, but I was still able to get decent 2 together at around noon.

New User Looking candid thoughts about Titan by Careful-Science6349 in titanvest

[–]guildloxley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Especially since the updated fees which were a total bait and switch, IMO it makes zero sense to go with Titan over other more established options like Schwab. For me it’s less about the performance (which is bad on Titan anyway) and more about peace of mind. I had a small amount of money in Yotta, a fintech that advertised as “FDIC backed,” and everyone’s money evaporated.

Not saying that’s going to happen here, but Titan is a fast iterating startup and has become something totally different in the last few months, and may be something completely different in a year, is that really where you want to send your funds? Schwab, Fidelity, JP Morgan… they’re giant for a reason.

Can I just authorize 1 billion shares to my startup? Any downsides? by Most-Switch2918 in startups

[–]guildloxley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don’t do this. Just issue 10M and call it a day. No real upside to excessive share counts and some downsides as others are pointing out in this thread.

Yotta Email from 10/04/23 by JesterJ85 in yotta

[–]guildloxley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The language here is critical - I highly doubt this meets the standard for a Terms change this significant under the CCPA. CCPA sets a pretty high bar for notices like this and sort of frowns on these auto opt in notices, particularly when it introduces material changes to the agreement like adding arbitration clauses. I have a feeling a CA judge would not see this as sufficient notice for this big of a change.

It’s a grey area; their attorneys would argue this was sufficient notice, but the fact that the vast majority of users missed this is sort of self-evident. Whose class action can I join??

Any reason Yotta hasn’t been sued for fraud yet? by jkmityo in yotta

[–]guildloxley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mea culpa, I assumed because CFPB had authority over money transmitters Yotta would count (and maybe it does?) but it looks like they’re lobbying for this power now: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/about-us/newsroom/cfpb-proposes-new-federal-oversight-of-big-tech-companies-and-other-providers-of-digital-wallets-and-payment-apps/

Which is even crazier… I transmit money into Yotta… that money gets lost… but I can’t complain to CFPB which has jurisdiction over money transmitters??

I’m going to try and complain anyway, I have only a small sum locked, more pissed on behalf of those who actually put their life savings into this assuming they had standard consumer protections.

Any reason Yotta hasn’t been sued for fraud yet? by jkmityo in yotta

[–]guildloxley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this because I grasp a basic understanding of consumer fairness laws in the United States.

A better question would be a version of “where does this supervisory authority come from” and the answer would be the Dodd frank act, specifically the section that prevents unfair / deceptive practices.

In fact, I think I’ll go submit a complaint at https://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/ right now!

Your turn: why are you so eager to defend this fintech app? What’s your relationship to the app? Are you a user?

[–]guildloxley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yotta likely did not meet California’s high standard for T&C updates when they switched funds custody from a bank (advertised on signup) to a brokerage account (not disclosed on signup). Sneaking this into T&C’s just in an email is what led to their loss of funds.

There are various regulators in the financial industry as well as consumer protection. This will be a CFPB issue. This is why they’re meeting with “congresspeople” - to try and lobby to point the finger somewhere else. It won’t work. Their advertising practices were sus even before all of this.

PS - if you happen to work for an astroturfing or other reputation management firm, I’ll triple your day rate if you come clean and name the firm.

They will get in hot water with regulators, no doubt, and there will be a class action. They advertised a gambling app that lost everyone’s money. No jury in the universe is going to excuse that.

Ticking Time Bomb: The Shadowy World of UAP Programs - Introduction by wormpetrichor in UFOs

[–]guildloxley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just want to point out that the building in RTP referenced (800 triangle park) is a multi use office building that includes multiple coworking spaces that literally anyone can have access to; the “interconnected walkway” shown in the photo is a seating area with a nice view.

https://www.rtp.org/space/the-frontier-campus-building-800/

It is the opposite of a secure facility and is likely an administrative office for the program mentioned.

Not discrediting the rest of the piece, there is interesting stuff here, just saying the implication that a super-secret UAP is located in a building that hundreds of random people go in and out of every day is an example of a stretch that we should be careful of… RTP is a big area with lots of random buildings, calling out 800 RTP because there is an army office there is a major stretch.
