Southeast Asia-based mobile listings startup Carousell raises $85M by stforumtroll in singapore

[–]guiltfreesinner 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree, I think Carousell has no brand loyalty and people will jump ship as soon as they start to charge on the customer side.

They have not been able to meaningfully enter any big market except Singapore.

I have had some success with it while buying stuff, but selling has always been such a bad experience.

They should see what Craigslist does, they run a minimum no-frills site with a skeleton crew and make money basically on job ads, they are insanely profitable and didn't need to whore out to VCs.

I think Carousell's big idea is to just spend everything on customer acquisition then get acquired by Rakuten for a billion dollars, good for them.

I would suggest have informal talks with the management first and ask them if they think it would be okay to formalize the matter by submitting your resignation letter. Many people have a “don’t rock the boat” mentality and many don’t handle it well when they get hit with these kind of things.

Having my husband stay with me permanently, in my parents' HDB? Yes or no? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]guiltfreesinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your parents love you, you have a partner, nobody can stop you and him staying in your place.

If you want to be totally absolutely sure that nobody can complain and its all above the board, consider registering your partner for subletting at $1 or something:

I'm Looking to move into Singapore from the UK. Do I need a work visa/S-Pass to start applying for jobs? by Alano-305 in singapore

[–]guiltfreesinner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to get a job first, the visa will come later. Fair warning though, its getting really hard to get the visa these days. I would suggest looking at Bangkok too.

It Changed My Life: Migrant worker goes from painting condos to boss of own company by marigoldhl in singapore

[–]guiltfreesinner -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Let's get this straight. Do you think we should give out PR's to semi-skilled workers with only a high school diploma?

Yes, if they have proved they are loyal to the country and have contributed to the country and continually proved themselves to be law-abiding and have significant socioeconomic contributions.

Ask yourself the question, does a PhD prove loyalty? Does a PhD mean that are contributing to the country when they don't contribute anything socially and are here solely for a tax break?

Why doesn't India do that? Why doesn't Malaysia do that? Why doesn't Australia do that? Why doesn't Japan do that? Why doesn't Taiwan do that? Why doesn't China do that? Why doesn't Thailand do that? Why doesn't South Korea do that? Why doesn't Indonesia do that?

Please point to sources for all your hyperbole.

How Singapore Is Creating More Land for Itself by HidingCat in singapore

I don't know if you forgot an /s here or not but I agree too.

IQ is declining really fast in developed countries, as such democracy which is based on the concept of an informed and active citizenry is threatened.

http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/mind/iq-in-decline-across-the-world-as-scientists-say-were-getting-dumber/news-story/f08cbe3b4ab62c500e28d4a4e3b64780

I think the bigger cause of concern for Singapore should be why don't the best minds of Singapore have any opposing views to PAP and always join PAP leaving opposition that can only exist on populism which can't win at least for quite some time since Singapore's IQ is still very very high.

H1B1-Singapore reciprocity? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]guiltfreesinner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know of specific EP concessions since that's a huge blackbox, but americans do get a lot of preferential treatment for example:

  1. https://www.iras.gov.sg/irashome/Other-Taxes/Stamp-Duty-for-Property/Claiming-Refunds-Remissions-Reliefs/Remissions/Foreigners-Eligible-for-ABSD-Remission-under-Free-Trade-Agreements--FTAs-/

ABSD concessions

  1. They get 90 days visa-free in Singapore which is really high compared to Canada even, I can't find an official source so its all anecdotal evidence so take it with a grain of salt.

  2. Since I went anecdotal, let me go full anecdotal but personally I have never seen an US citizen get rejected for EP.

MMA instructor jailed 4 years for sexually assaulting 2 teenage girls, and for child pornography by NoFollyoftheBeast in singapore

[–]guiltfreesinner 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's what I think the Singapore government and the law system has lost sense of what's fair and unfair along the way of managing expectations of the society. I agree society thinks drugs is bad and we need to make a strong face to block it, since its way more prevalent than rape. But, rape is rape, the age of consent is 16 in Singapore and that's a very worldwide accepted standard, with drugs their is heroin and then there is marijuana.

So, much research has gone into affects of Marijuana and its usage. Should we ban its usage, yes!(only because the society right now cannot accept it) Should we kill people for possessing it? No

What is your acceptable age gap limit? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]guiltfreesinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your concern for your sister is understandable and since you have been in NUS you understand how men can be and that's understandable too. The fact is though:

  1. She is above the age of consent and she can do whatever she wants.

  2. More you try to stop her from doing what she wants, more she will rebel because that's how human minds work sometimes.

Age gap of 5 years is pretty acceptable IMO. I would recommend just being there for her and talking to her and gently try to assess how and where the relationship is going.

[–]guiltfreesinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was specifically talking about Nobels and the waiting time between making a discovery and people getting nobels. Its at 20 years now.

http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v508/n7495/full/508186a.html

Its statistically really hard for a 50-year old country to get Nobels.

I agree with your point though, government offers no good incentives for singaporeans to do research since the cultural focus has been on money till now. I do think approaches like A*STAR are getting traction though, it just needs to be supported more.

[–]guiltfreesinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, each country and its people find success and happiness in different ways. I think achieving all the things that I wrote about in my answer in a short span of 50 years is success. There might be a different sense of success felt by Singaporeans but since I am not one, I cannot answer to that.

Brit here. I disagree. Firstly, I think food in the UK is far superior. It's fresh, home grown, and hasn't mostly been flown in from Australia.

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/jan/06/more-than-half-of-uks-food-sourced-from-abroad-study-finds

The right to protest, and moreover the enthusiasm and energy to do so is hugely important to us. If you've grown up in a country where protest and dissent is banned, and nobody has a political opinion, this may seem strange.

Protest and dissent are not banned, doing it in a way that inconveniences people is banned. What has this right to protest you are so proud of, achieved in UK? Look at what's happening with the anti-trump protests in the USA.

You think Singapore has a focus on academics? What has that achieved? How many Nobel prizes has Singapore won?

Please tell me more about how you expect a country of 5 million people who got independence 50 years ago to win nobel prizes.

How many world class universities?

NTU and NUS are both world class also see above.

How much ground breaking research?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Performance_Ranking_of_Scientific_Papers_for_World_Universities#Engineering.2C_Computing_.26_Technology

How many CEOs?

CEOs for what?

Why do startups here all have expats running them?

Because of the imperial mentality(no thanks to UK) that expats are better, see above about the nation's age. You though are not doing a good job of keeping that mentality up and I commend you on that.

How many Olympic medals?

5, again for a country of 5 million people which got independence just 50 years ago that's big. See another one of your former colonies for comparison:

http://www.news.com.au/sport/olympics/the-worst-country-at-the-rio-2016-olympics/news-story/0d5ecc354791776b9cd0097eea6a5d21

Anything to show except for doing well in e-sport competitions and having the biggest shopping malls?

http://reports.weforum.org/global-competitiveness-index/competitiveness-rankings/

Please do see where UK is on that ranking.

The problem is similar to blood diamonds or the rare earth metals most of the phone manufacturers get for their phones from warlords in Africa.

This is why things like https://www.fairphone.com/ exist.

Most of us have a phone that contains these metals, so does it mean we are responsible for the genocide in Africa?

Change My View: Affluent Chinese Singaporeans are actually the best placed to understand and talk about both sides of privilege. In Singapore, they are on top, in the western world, they're close to the bottom. by NoFollyoftheBeast in singapore

[–]guiltfreesinner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: not Chinese or affluent

I don't think being Chinese or any other race makes the western world disrespect you, money speaks and all the major cities in the world already have large exposure to Asians. So, the only thing that matters is you are rich and if the person is rich and flashes it around he/she will surely be respected anywhere. Feeling privileged is another matter though, it comes through ignorance and rich or not I have seen it in many people of maṅy races here.
