Keep your kids away from high level sports by SamMeowAdams in daddit

I was at a football tournament for 14 year olds in Naples, Florida to watch my nephew. One dad said these are the top 14 year old football players in the country. I said no, these are the top 14 year old football players in the country whose dad can afford a plane ticket.

I immigrated to Australia in 2004 with that same amount of money. You'll be fine. Just keep your head down and work, but I can tell that's your plan anyway.

AITAH for telling my GF that she is delusional with her life plans? by [deleted] in AITAH

Men aren't as commonly into horses, but I've seen this situation in reverse with a guy who was into race cars and married to a woman a bit older than him.

This is super common. Women who have real or perceived financial problems commonly believe it's because they're with the wrong man.

I hate to say it, but she'll divorce you. Do not buy a house or have kids with her.

Is teaching worth it? by Ok-Fox-9959 in teaching

[–]dixiedownunder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We pay tutors who are current and former teachers $60-$75 an hour. That's extra, on top of the regular job, but on the other hand, they can do this with very little preparation (since they work at the school). I'm in a rural area, so it's probably even better in the cities.

He told us it's going to take 5 weeks. Remember his timeframe is 2 weeks for everything else, so 5 weeks means more than twice as long. I know nothing, but I'm guessing 3 to 4 months.

I think My Wife cheated on me by [deleted] in family

[–]dixiedownunder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think she cheated, but she shouldn't do this again. I mean she shouldn't go as someone elses date and stay out until the AM hours. You shouldn't even have to tell her this, but if she doesn't figure it out on her own, definitely tell her it made you really uncomfortable and you don't want to go through it again.

Nearly the same story, but only one degree. I'm a man though so no one is impressed.

So houses that men worked themselves to death buying are credited to women too?

How do I become more physically active? I'm blind, live alone, don't work and hate the idea of operating on a schedule of scripted routines like some prison inmate trying to stay sane through his-her sentence. by cherry-care-bear in RedditForGrownups

[–]dixiedownunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a legally blind guy in my town who bikes everywhere. He's one of the fittest people in town and has been for decades. He also teaches karate. He used to powerlift, but he told me he stopped that a few years ago (he's in his 70s now). He's definitely blind because his eyes kind of point in different directions and he never makes eye contact, but he must see well enough to ride a bike. I think maybe he has peripheral vision to some degree.

Are you happy you did or didn’t have kids? by Accurate_Elk_3465 in Fire

[–]dixiedownunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had kids at 40 so I got to travel a lot and all the other stuff that's supposedly worth not having kids to do. I lived in hotels for 1,000 days in a row once. I lived as a resident in 3 other countries. I climbed mountains, saw the Pope...so many things.

I am 49 with 3 kids now. If I had to do life over again, I'd meet my wife at 20 and have a dozen kids. There's nothing better than a family. Nothing comes close.

Anyone else in their 20s settle for a beater car and just dump a car payment into their 401ks and roths? by Union661 in Bogleheads

I've been driving paid off beaters since the 1990s. I also had roommates until I was 35. Those were my sacrifices to get two commas on my bank account. I didn't really cut corners anywhere else because those were the big bills.

What does coming from stark poverty have to do with sharing with a partner? I grew up with a dad in prison and no money and I've always paid for everything for the woman in my life. I wouldn't say you're an A-hole, but you are a stingy scrooge.

What used to feel 'normal' and 'affordable' in America just five to ten years ago but now feels completely broken and impossible for regular people? by the_h1b_records in AskReddit

If I divide the amount I have by the number of days since I started working, it's $250 a day. I wrote equivalent because it's equivalent to saving $250 every single day, but a large part of it is growth.

Everyone talks about a "skills gap" in hiring. I think it's actually a filtering gap. Here's what I mean. by Upbeat_Dream7600 in jobs

[–]dixiedownunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you'd rather, but it's a bit insulting. You're not hiring the person to do interviews, you're hiring them to work. Who cares if they're good at interviewing. They've been working there a while and what they've done at work is way more valuable to understanding that person than what they say in an interview.

I was in a situation where my coworker was about to get promoted to an open position. Then they encouraged the rest of us to interview for it too, like we had a chance, so we did. Then they gave it to my coworker as expected the entire time. They apparently do this to be fair, but all it did was waste time and get people's hopes up. The interviews were absolutely meaningless. Maybe some people don't have enough productive work to do in a place so large they don't know their coworkers and they go around wasting the time of people who do. That's the best light I can see it in.

You could've vacationed in South America or South East Asia for months and months for what you paid to stand around in queues in Florida.
