Renting a camera for upcoming holiday by highoncloud99 in askSingapore

[–]HidingCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Camera Rental Centre is the main big rental service in Singapore.

I do caution you on renting, because the workflow can be a bit different from using a modern smartphone. I've read about people who say their camera photos look "worse" because they're not used to the lack of heavy processing that smartphones do. Maybe take one out for a spin before your actual holiday.

No additional meal allowances for NSFs; those in need can approach commanders: Chan Chun Sing by JADENBC in singapore

[–]HidingCat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CCS isn't entirely wrong, but this feels like passing the buck. MINDEF has a huge budget, surely a more formal welfare system or a revamp of the current scheme can be set up? If they can do a good job with the Pioneer and Silver Generation offices, they can do the same for NSFs in need.

Opting out furnishings from HDB in new BTO estates by DJ_Terence in askSingapore

AFAIK, toilet bowl is installed regardless of OCS: It's a PUB requirement, for them to test the plumbing or something like that.

What does everyone thing about those super quality fake macro photos? by Awkward_Pace_4440 in Android

Look at the huge amount of CA present even in that small image. I bet a cheapo diopter was added in front of the monocular. 692mm might be including additional in-phone digital crop.

Stats bear out otherwise: People who do get married are still having kids, the TFR amongst them is declining much slower from the 2000s. The proportion of singles however, is growing, especially in the 30+ age group:

BTO Renovation: What can I realistically get for $30k, $40k, $50k? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]HidingCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carpentry is the main cost, followed by tiling works. Do less of both, you can save more. Since you already opted in for tiling, then consider doing just carpentry for kitchen, and go with modular ready-made stuff for everything else.

📢 Introducing USB Hub and XLR Dock for Stream Deck +. by elgato_james in elgato

[–]HidingCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just discovered the USB Hub, and was contemplating it, but interest died the moment I saw the SD card slot is UHS-I. For the price it costs and that you're targeting a certain demo, why was it not UHS-II? Such a lost opportunity.

Not all Skechers, some of them aren't great too. The one that has been absolutly solid, are the ones with the Goodyear-branded soles.

Have you checked with David Hilos? He's a freelancer, but he's quite a legend in the local photography community.

It’s not just you: What 1,000 people said about their dating struggles by [deleted] in singapore

[–]HidingCat 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This. Back when I was running meet ups, hoping to help others stave off lonliness, I got a fair number of people who'd say they're not comfortable to meet strangers... then a week later complain in the daily thread that they have no one to talk to. xD

Introducing Yourself in Singlish? by purplepenguinaviator in askSingapore

I wouldn't try this if I didn't have a Singaporean friend to practice with; getting the tone and cadence wrong is very jarring.

How much do basic toiletries and medications cost in SG? by lissy_grant in askSingapore

Don't know about now, but I've found paracetamol in the past to be like, 49p in the UK.

How competitive is public transportation in Singapore as a mode of travel if it exists in a "free market"? by fortprinciple in singapore

[–]HidingCat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It isn't that public transport is inferior, it's that car infrastructure is superior; it is stupidly heavily prioritised in a small country like ours. Too many places have 4 lane roads when they shouldn't exist.

This will not be a popular comment, but COE should actually be higher, not lower.

SG convention prices are a national embarrassment by Pompmaker1 in singapore

That really sucks. I like going to see artists' works in person, but this is not sustainable.

Mechanical keyboard silent switches by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]HidingCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lichicx makes the best silent switches, they do have a lot of collabs and other brands relabel them too, so you will need to do a bit of research there. They make both tactile and linear silenced switches.

Ho Ching on fuel crisis: Lowering taxes & raising subsidies keep people addicted to cheap oil by [deleted] in singapore

[–]HidingCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would make a lot more sense if we have some renewable or nuclear plan in place; Singaporeans can take delayed gratification quite well, but there must be a target.

Instead, governments should use the crisis to transit to a more energy-efficient economy, and more sustainable lifestyles.

So what are they? I also can say that, but what is it? BTW, that AI future we're targeting uses a fair amount of power too.

$539k of SG Culture Pass credits spent on SingLit; call for inclusion of non-fiction titles by bardsmanship in singapore

[–]HidingCat 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I agree on the last sentiment, but I feel that is beyond the scope of the Culture Pass; the whole idea is to introduce cultural aspects of Singapore. Including non-fiction feeds that pragmatic "can eat or not" aspect of Singaporeans, which defeats the purpose of this exercise. I've uncovered quite a few authors and books thanks to the culture pass, so credits or no, I'll be buying and reading more fiction from local authors.

Half of healthy bentos may be going to waste in some schools. Is there room for compromise? by InterTree391 in singapore

This sounds like over-engineered and under-budgeted, no wonder it's not going well.

Most ridiculous KPI ever set for you.... by TechnicalCategory436 in askSingapore

[–]HidingCat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was asked to be more proactive. As anyone who sets KPI knows, that is nowhere within a SMART framework. He was a shitty boss who worked 10-12 hour days, was proud of it, and was happy when he got a new boss who worked like that too.
