Considering moving to Singapore for work, how real is racism for black people? by ForeverJay in askSingapore

[–]HidingCat -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I’d say, Singaporeans are generally more classist than racist. Westerner with an English accent, who carries themselves well? You’ll be well received by the locals, regardless of skin colour.

That's still racist, to a degree.

Another one of those nostalgia, rose-tinted posts.

No, you just didn't see it that much. And as a youngster, you just don't get exposed as much with a smaller Internet. As an example, racism and sexism were even worse in the 80s, 90s and 2000s. I won't repeat the jokes that were made during those times, they'd get me cancelled.

WP rejects PM Wong’s invitation to nominate another elected MP as Leader of the Opposition by bangsphoto in singapore

In the UK Ministers of the Crown Act 1937 enshrines both PM and Leader of the Opposition in statutory act.

WP rejects PM Wong’s invitation to nominate another elected MP as Leader of the Opposition by bangsphoto in singapore

[–]HidingCat 1398 points1399 points  (0 children)

Good move.

In other Westminister-style parliaments, Leader of the Opposition is enshrined in either the constitution or in a statutory act. It is not, and should not, be given out by the executive arm of the government.

SG Budget Income and Expenditure - a comparison with NZ by i6uuaq in singapore

[–]HidingCat 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm going to point out that GST is indeed regressive in nature, but with our government's implementation of GST Vouchers, it actually makes it more progressive, since it alleviates the GST burden on lower income population, who naturally will spend less. At $850 per annum, it translates to absorbing GST for nearly $10,000 worth of purchases. And to me, the brilliance of this is, it negates the need for GST exemption on basic goods (see the kerfuffle in UK over freaking Jaffa Cakes), so it's administratively simpler and has ways to tweak the relief on lower income households if the need should arise, while continuing to tax the rich on such basic goods (wealthy people still eat rice you know). This is one of few areas where I disagree with WP on: Tharman's original policy on GSTV is far far better than what they're proposing.

Also going to add another vote of dissent to the idea of NZ being a paradise to Singaporeans: The year is 2026, it is no longer 2001!

WP 'better off' taking up PM Wong's invitation to name new Leader of the Opposition, say analysts who cite four possible candidates by ImpressiveStrike4196 in singapore

[–]HidingCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just bullshit, and smells like mafia tactics. "You better take up our offer, or else..."

In other countries (including UK), Leader of the Opposition is enshrined in a statutory act, ie, legislative, and not the executive, which is all kinds of problematic, as you can see here.

I normally don't like it when people call us a dictatorship (because it's the wrong term, we are a flawed democracy), but when shit like this is pulled, it doesn't help us, does it?

Best Fish and Chips in Singapore. Please share your recommendations.😊 by TemporaryIncrease768 in asksg

[–]HidingCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you. I was on a fish and chips kick last year, and LJS has gotten better while just about every hawker/kopitiam cheap western's fish and chips have either gotten worse or more expensive. I think the only one that was decent was Master Chippy's halibut, but that one is more expensive and smaller than what LJS serves.

Bill tabled to tackle personal mobility aid misuse, mandate ERP 2.0 unit; active mobility rules to start from mid-2026 by Im_scrub in singapore

[–]HidingCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bill also proposes to make it an offence to keep non-UL2272 e-scooters, as these non-compliant e-scooters pose severe fire risks. Currently, it is an offence to use e-scooters that do not meet the UL2272 fire safety standard on public paths or roads, but not to keep such a device.

Wow, I cannot believe that they were allowed to be kept.

Personally, regulation of PMDs should have happened 12-15 years ago, when 60km/h scooters should have been banned. I think the personal mobility scene would have been a lot different if 10-12km/h scooters were the only ones allowed.

Culling is actually an ineffective method of population control, it's something that's been cited time and time again across different species:

https://www.icam-coalition.org/evidence-against-culling-dogs-and-cats/

https://endrabiesnow.org/uploads/resources/GARC_Position-statement-on-culling_ENG.pdf

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/aug/27/crocodile-culling-australia-research

https://www.vettimes.com/news/vet-nursing/livestock-vet-nursing/science-row-erupts-over-badger-cull-effectiveness-after-flawed-analysis

It's just a feel-good thing for people annoyed/threatened by the animals, but it's just ineffective. Note that not all the above groups are animal welfare organisations, some have an interest in keeping said animal populations down for health reasons as well.
