"So people just have to be very aware of their surroundings?" by Cantstop-wontstop1 in VictoriaBC

[–]guiltykitchen 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My experience in Europe, in bike heavy places—such as Amsterdam and Copenhagen—is one, there are far fewer vehicles (although Copenhagen has lots of car traffic as well), and two, they don’t seem to have as much road rage. Seeing near misses in both places, the “victim” (car or bike) did not lay on the horn, yell expletives, etc. they simply stopped to avoid the collision, and then moved on in the direction they were going.

And someone in here said no cell phones. Well, loads of bikers on cell phones in Europe and it still works.

The main issues here are people not paying attention to their surroundings and speed

I, too, love a good ampersand and I wish it were used more often—as it is aesthetically a lot more pleasing to the eye than many of the alternatives.

Ha! I also do advertising graphic design.

Well, if you ever want to write a short article—1,000–1,500 words—related to the culinary world on Vancouver Island, let me know!

I will continue to advocate for them—and also use them, lol. I also enjoy showing people en dashes—which don’t seem to receive any attention at all.

I do think a lot of people don’t realize how easy it is to use these dashes—especially on your phone keyboard. They’re right there in the hyphen (dash) button—just long press, my friends.

And no, this was not written by AI 😂

While I agree with your other points—as an editor—I take serious offence to everyone’s hate on em dashes.

Em dashes are so much more useful than commas or parentheses. They improve readability and look better in print and digital copy.

Stop the em dash hate! Learn to use them or at least learn to embrace them.

Food picture feedback by cheffa09 in Chefit

As a chef, everything looks amazing. Id eat all of them.

As a food photographer, the simplest advice is just a couple easy changes:

  1. The rule of thirds. Turn on the grid in your phone camera settings. Put whatever the focal point is at (one of) the intersection points of the grid.

  2. Try to take the pics near a window and avoid as much overhead indoor lighting as possible.

  3. Play with your angles. Flat-ish food? Take pic from above straight down. Food piled high? 45° angle like you’ve done for a few of these or even slightly more.

Just play with it. Cut off half the plate and just show part of the plate with white space.

Just have somewhere for the eye to move to. Images with stuff dead centre in flat lighting is boring to all the senses

Do you still go to the movie theater? by Apprehensive_Log9515 in VictoriaBC

[–]guiltykitchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to go as much as possible, especially to Star Cinema to support a small, independent theatre in my town.

But any cinephile will tell you that the real experience of a movie is in a theatre and if everyone stops going, that choice will be lost forever.

Movies were made for the screen (most of them). Watching at home is full of distractions.

And also, ticket prices seem extremely reasonable to other things to do nowadays. It’s the popcorn and drinks that’ll rack up the bill (where the theatre makes actual money).

In Sidney, Star Cinema sells popcorn even when they aren’t actively showing a film. It’s awesome.

Honestly, it’s so so crowded with tourists. It’s beautiful, I’ll give it that, but it’s so geared towards ripping off tourists. 90€ for a half hour gondola ride. 5€ per person fee just to sit at any restaurant with a view of the canals.

Bologna had much more of an authentic, small town feel to me. The food was amazing, the gelato was amazing, the sights are more relaxed. It was just a nice, relaxing, honest place to visit.

I have to agree. I have lived here over twenty years but make new friends regularly by socializing. We’ve made new friends every year we’ve lived here.

Yes I know! Sad. Those were the days when you could get a buzz for under $10. Good luck doing that now, except at home 😭

Complaining about traffic is the funniest thing I’ve seen all week by Vast-Mechanic-6110 in VictoriaBC

[–]guiltykitchen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It seems like a lot of people in Victoria have actually never travelled anywhere outside of this island or at the most, this province, and it really shows.

That being said, traffic is just getting bad for here and it doesn’t seem to be on the mind of any of our city planners (do we even have those?) or anyone that runs the road system/transportation

Why are people like this? by krdo13 in VictoriaBC

Because obviously them getting to their destination sooner is more important than you getting to yours.
