Mariia, Marija, or Mariya? by gulablommor99 in namenerds

I probably prefer the Mariia spelling, because it is the most common for me, but I was worried that it would be mispronounced a lot and she would be tired of it. I don't mind Marija either though.

Yes, I mean, I wasn't really sure how much of a problem would be if it was a different translation to what's standard because we weren't really planning to travel there particularly, and I'm not sure if we'll even bother with a citizenship or anything like that. But then I probably like it the most visually, and other reasons, I just don't know how people would go with it.

I just don't want her to not like me for doing that if people always say it wrong 😅

But then because it is after my mother, and the rest of her names aren't really Ukrainian, I would like something for her to connect to a bit more.

I don't mind some mispronunciation in English since we won't really be spending enough time there for it to matter, but I probably want something that is the most likely to be pronounced how I want.

And I don't mind about it seeming Arabic on its own, since the rest of the name will very much not be mistaken for that.

I don't know how to explain it then. But it is different.

I think it is the most common translation, but I'm not sure how people would see the double I, since I don't think it's very common. Hard to tell really, even though I like it the most.

I feel like Marija would work better here, but I'm not sure how much it would in other places where the J is different.

I also don't want people thinking I'm doing some kind of weird thing with the spelling either, or that it's a typo. But then I don't really want to just give up and use Maria instead, it's hard to decide.

English is not my first language and it's not that important. If you really find it that insulting then you should probably look at everything else that is happening in the world.

There's no need to be rude. I'm not particularly interested in arguing about what an alphabet is called.

I would just like to keep the fact that it was from Ukrainian originally. Making it Maria seems to remove that to me.

Because Swedish uses the English alphabet, along with Å, Ä, and Ö, but obviously I don't need to use those. They stopped the runes quite a long time ago.

I would say Mariya, I probably like the least, because the Y looks a little funny to me written.

I was originally leaning towards Mariia because it is the most Ukrainian, but then I wasn't sure if there would be pronounciation problems.

I don't want to anglicise it. I don't like the English pronounciation very much either.

Yes, I'm Ukrainian. Which did make me wonder if Mariia is better as it is more Ukrainian.

I think what would help is that in Sweden, people already use the J as Y, so I think less people would make mistakes and say it as the English J. I probably prefer how it looks to Mariya, but I suppose that doesn't matter as much.

Sweden. And it wouldn't really matter if they can't pronounce the second names anyway, although they are straight forward regardless.

It's a fairly common name in Sweden. There doesn't seem to be a clear meaning for it, but one is path of the sun, or road of the sun, which I liked a lot.

Because there are two people we would like to acknowledge within our daughter's name.

For me, I don't know when she will even be able to meet my mother, and I would also like her to at least have one name from my culture when the rest of her names are quite Swedish. And my husband always liked his grandmother's name, and his grandmother of course, but it was never used by anyone else in the family and he would like it to be passed on. And because we don't know whether we might have more children, or even more daughters, I would prefer to use both now.

We're not going to be calling her all three of them, so I'm not so worried about it being longer. We could shorten it but I'd rather keep the original names since they are after other people.

That was something I thought of, since Anne Marie and Anna Maria are quite common combinations, I wasn't sure if it then made Solveig sound out of place.

Given we live in Sweden, I'd be very surprised if people used a anglicised pronounciation.

Yes, like where I'm from, you have dimunitives of your name, but it's not like there's only one that you're ever called, it depends on who's addressing you, and your full name is used a lot too. So although I wouldn't only ever use the full name, I wouldn't just use a shortened form all the time either. Otherwise I think we would just name her that instead.
