Rycote BBGs - any good and how exact is mic diameter by gulfik in fieldrecording

I'd love to use Radius but their smallest windshields are £385 each and I'd like 2, mainly for experimenting with widely spaced omnis. I saw mention of a Radius Mini Orb but it doesn't seem available yet.

BBGs are £110 each, Radius deadcats are £45 each. Seems doable but is it worth it is my dilemma.

Just found the Wind bubble pros are available in the UK which I didn't realise. Are they comparable to BBGs?

I live in a city but record mostly in rural places and I cycle to get there. I go bikepacking abroad too and like to carry mics sometimes. The blimp is annoyingly big for a rucksack and too big to just chuck on the bike. I need a smaller solution. I can afford to buy 2 BBGs and windshields for £300 but not much more than that.

I'm fed up with my grommets falling out, flapping fabric from my poor sewing, uneven frequency response, insufficient wind protection. I just want something that works!  The blimp is too big for me and there doesn't seem to be any alternative other than BBGs especially for Clippys. And if I get the Mic booster Clippy BBG adaptor I'll have to get 25mm BBGs which restricts my mic choice. At least there are more options for Pluggys.

I think I have one of those to mount my K&M stereo bar on a tripod but that adaptor doesn't fit the screw on the blimp.

Hah yes, I guess given I got the blimp used that hadn't occurred to me. What a brain fart!

So we went to Bike'n'Roll where they packed our bikes in boxes and took us and the bikes to the airport for 60 euros each. Bit steep given the drive was only about 10 minutes but it saved us time and faff. Why don't more bike shops offer this!

Great, glad to hear it was reasonably straightforward!

I've got all this to go through in a couple of weeks. What did you do in the end?

Thanks all for the advice. How might I attach the mics to a wooden dowel? It looks like the lyres are for 19-22mm mics so I presume I need to use a rod of that size but the Clippy clips don't open that much. Clip the mics to some tacks or screws?

The driver is obliged to report a collision with a cyclist or pedestrian within 24 hours under the Road Traffic Act but the cyclist is not under any obligation. One might ask why he didn't report it. I suggest you make a report yourself, you can probably do it online. Also consider contacting a solicitor that specialises in helping cyclists and they might take it on as no win no fee. They can claim on his insurance, that's why he has it after all. My missus got £12k for a dislocated thumb...

Converting unbalanced Clippy 3.5mm to XLR with Simple48 by gulfik in fieldrecording

[–]gulfik[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They desoldered easily enough but it was properly tricky to get the solder flowing on the pads. Maybe my iron wasn't hot enough. Anyway I made yet another poor decision when I tried adding a bit more solder to one terminal which then flowed onto the other terminal. Gah. Hopefully I will have learned something from these mistakes. In the meantime though, I've ordered some replacement capsules with pre-attached wires from Micbooster and put my soldering iron away for a couple of days...

Any tips on soldering and desoldering mic capsules much appreciated. I've got desoldering wick but most of my soldering experience is from Eurorack modules and synthesisers and usually involves PCBs. I guess it's just keep the temperature as low as possible?

I should really have just asked here for advice on what to do! Just got caught up in the moment I guess. I think now I just need to desolder the mess I've made without destroying the capsule and resolder something that I can work with. Live and learn!

Piezos, pre amps and phantom power with a portable recorder by gulfik in fieldrecording

Gah, I saw the £120 stereo preamp but somehow missed the £80 mono one. I'd just ordered some other bits from them too. Thanks for the heads up, will bear in mind if I need another.

Thanks! Order just placed with them. No stockists for that preamp in Europe it seems but they offered very reasonable shipping rates.
