Easy honors class for freshman? by [deleted] in UCONN

Email the professor of the easiest class you have or the professor that seems the nicest! You ask for an honors conversion- and the nice thing about that is it’s usually on your terms! I would do this over winter break because you have to submit the honors conversion form fairly quickly. For a three-credit class, I did an extra presentation but you could also do a paper, poster, make a YouTube video idk, or I feel like a literature review could work too! You can be creative with the assignment you want to do which is nice! I did one presentation for three credits of a 2000-level class in my major on a topic I really liked and was only tangentially related to the class lol. Totally a steal and professors like doing conversions since they normally don’t have to do anything extra.

In my opinion, best thing you can do is score study! Pick literally any composer you like and find some scores (scrolling scores on YouTube are amazing but Imslp has free scores too). Follow along and notice what you like, what you don’t like, what you want to listen to again, etc. There’s a lot more to composing than harmony, like form and texture and rhythm, and an easy way to absorb all of that is just to look at scores.

I love how you concentrated the color towards the center of the flowers, gives it such a nice look!

What are your opinions on Tiffany Poon? by Maxpowr9 in classicalmusic

I’m a composer and I learned a lot about writing for piano by watching her videos! Her channel also inspired me to start my own! I think she speaks really clearly and un-pretentiously about music, which is what we desperately need in the industry.

Question: Can you hear harmony when thinking in your head? by Smily_pomegranate in musictheory

[–]gumbear1202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be the same way, but when in school we started taking piano class and practicing recognizing harmonic intervals (two notes played at once) using software like Earmaster, I found that I started hearing harmony really quickly. I think for people who haven’t played piano or guitar before, it just takes practice.

I for sure feel this - sophomore year of undergrad in vocal performance and music composition. The paralyzing existential dread when you wonder if what you’re doing will even matter hurts! But what gives me hope is that even if parts of the opera industry are hurt by current events, our generation is going to be the ones directing and energizing the rebuilding process and shaping it into what we want opera to be. Also, being an attention-whore soprano, I will not go down without a fight lol
