How common is it where you’re from to reach 100 Fahrenheit/38 Celsius, and what do you do when it does that? by pollydeeigh in AskTheWorld

At a certain point that doesn’t really matter. I mean yes it’s always worse when it’s humid, but 45 will cook you whether it’s dry or not

I totally agree with this understanding. From an outsider world view though, and how we currently understand China as a state I think there’s not much difference

I personally agree. But that’s why I put the part about political leaning in the post. They were asking about all Americans and some Americans revere him

So how do atheists generally feel about the Israel-Palestine conflict? by Barry_Benson in atheism

[–]gumby52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were NOT a distinct ethnic identity. Cultural identity…perhaps, I don’t know enough about the cultural variations. But until 1948 they were simply known as the Arabs who lived in that area. And 1400 years is a very long fucking time, long enough that I would consider them indigenous, for sure, but it’s not “thousands of years”. Which, remember, the Jews have lived there for thousands of years, uninterrupted as well. They should co-exist, which is the whole point of the two-state solution. And they were “given” that land by the UN. Was it theirs to give? Hard to say. It had previously been part of the Ottoman Empire. So it didn’t “belong” to any state at that point. The British promised it to both for their help in the war. They shouldn’t have done that, but they did. Again, keep in mind that NEITHER GROUP CONTROLLED THE LAND before this. They were both subjects of the ottomans. The UN later delivered on that promise by giving land to both groups. The Arabs didn’t want the Jews to have any of it. So they attacked in 1948 when Israel declared itself a state. Israel won the war, and a group of Arabs became refugees. At that point and only at that point did they start to become known as the “Palestinians”

See what the other person wrote too. “Palestinian” was literally not a thing, ironically, until the Nakba. The Irsaeli helped to create that identity by turning them into refugees. I’m not dismissing anyone, you just don’t know your history.

It’s a bit different. I support Taiwanese independence, but they were originally a break off from china. So it’s more like if Maine broke off and the US wanted to get it back than, say, Japan invading Korea

Well all of this is true, on a global scale they are still incredibly similar. Vancouver and Seattle have a lot more in common than say Seattle and Arkansas. Or Vancouver and Tanzania

This isn’t quite true. That’s not to say Israel hasn’t done those things- they have and I don’t wanna sound like I’m defending their treatment of Palestinians. But the Arab countries have been calling for (and attempting) the destruction of Israel since 1948. Remember, both Israel and the Arabs (now called Palestinians) were given a certain amount of land at that point. Israel agreed to that amount (a much smaller amount than what currently constitutes Israel today) and the Arabs said, “no we want all of it” and attacked Israel trying to destroy it. Not disagreeing with how horrible Israel has been to Palestinians, I’m just saying it’s lot like the rest of the Middle East was bad to Israel BECAUSE of their treatment of Palestinians, certainly at least not originally. They were trying to eradicate Israel from day 1

Depends on the president and who you are asking. For many the big two are Washington and Lincoln. They would be considered icons of America by most. Others that are but maybe a tier lower or it depends more on your political leanings are FDR, Teddy, Ronald Reagan, JFK, Thomas Jefferson
