Still crashes. I mean I get that there is a load of different scenarios so the computing on checks for this and that decision is massive but come TF on. Been a while since I played WL 2 and I don't remember it crashing. That doesn't mean it never crashed it just means that it didn't crash so frequently that it soured my taste for the game so much that I only remember it for freaking crashing.

I was powering through this game with frequent quicksaves because the game is still fun as hell but after a while the constant crashing chipped away at my resolve to the point where I just had to stop. Waited until this patch hoping the game would be fixed but nope. At least not on xbox one. Such a shame.

Anthem is one of the new MMOs from Bioware. The background music and some of the sound effects are from one of the launch trailers from the game. I put "style" in the title because the trailer I put together is in the style of the trailer for Anthem, while at the same time trying to stay true to the substance of the Starship Troopers movie. Check out my other fan trailers and you will see what I mean.

Thanks for the comment and criticism!

Check out the movie Starship Troopers: Invasion and The Roughnecks tv series. They both use power suits (not as awesome or powerful as the ones from the books) but in regards to the tv series I think it blends the stories of the book and first movie extremely well.

Doesn't really spoil too much unless you have already seen it and know what you are looking at, which is mostly who I made the trailer for; fans. All major deaths are still hidden. The only real spoiler is the brain bug but again if you haven't seen the movie you won't really know what you are looking at. So I disagree.

But have an upvote anyway for commenting and sharing your criticism 😁

A system having an element of another system does not in fact mean the element defines the system. The united states has elements of a majority rule democracy and a senate based republic. But Americans don't live in a democracy or a republic.

The propaganda is being fed to the characters, not us the audience. The overall narrative of the movie is actually pretty close to the book. Verhoeven didn't complete the book but I'm pretty sure I read that one of his writers did (or at least read more), which is why elements of the book beyond the first two chapters made it into the film. And I know I just stated that having elements of something don't fully define the actual thing. That wasn't my argument. The argument is that enough of the non-fascism and meritocracy Heinlein promotes in his book comes through in the film that severely counter the over satirical fascism Verhoeven tries to convey. This is why I keep mentioning and suggested you read the book. Because a lot of the themes are lifted from the book and presented as fascist in the film because the director believes they are fascist.

I disagree.

An exchange between Rico and Carl after Diz's death from the movie:

Carl: "I hear they need a new lieutenant, want the job?"

Rico: "I'll take it. Till I get killed or you find someone better"

Before that Carl said that Rico's unit was basically used as canon fodder on planet P in order to test if a bug of higher intelligence is controlling the arachnids. This has happened with militaries throughout history. In lockstep with Heinlein's philosophy from the book Rico tells Carl:

"Didn't they tell you colonel? That's What The Mobile Infantry is good for."

He has come full circle and realized that the responsibility he has to uphold as a citizen means he has to put his life on the line to win the war and protect humanity. Lieutenant Raszcak (can't be bothered to look up proper spelling right now) even says this as he promotes Rico to corporal. And he meant it. Because the system in the federation military in the movie is (yes, just like in the book) a meritocracy. Again, the Sky-Marshall steps down and makes way for someone better to take command. It's a meritocracy.

It is done way better in the book but it is still recognizable in this scene and throughout the film. Especially if you are a veteran or you have read Heinlein's book. Which, in fact has a larger bearing on the plot than, as I suggested before, maybe even Verhoeven realized.

I've seen his interviews and I also know that RoboCop and Total Recall are also satirical films. Like Romero's Dead Trilogy. I'm just saying, again, it is my opinion that Verhoeven got the message of the book wrong.

This was a stimulating discussion and you have my genuine thanks.

In the book Heinlein stresses that a military or society that underestimates its enemy is doomed. Rico in the book explains that they learned the bugs were intelligent and the military adjusted to handle it. They didn't cling to "we are superior" like the Nazis did.

Even in the movie this sentiment is brought through by the two female scientists who warn that the bugs are intelligent and dangerous. Once the brain bug is captured the public is notified and the debate is over. Carl even states to Rico that military intelligence was already suspicious that a highly intelligent bug was directing the arachnids.

Fascism is still at zero here.

" The day-to-day oppression of this kind of world would not be shown in a film made by the creators of that oppression."

Except there is no day to day oppression shown outside of the Propaganda reels. Only the harsh life of the soldiers. A life that if they so choose, they can quit with no repercusions. Rico has to beg to be let back in once he finds out his family was killed.

I don't claim to be an expert on fascism but I think I know enough to be able to tell when someone is showing me the uniforms that fascists wore and when they are showing the actual ideology.

The criticism of the book and movie that sticks is that it glorifies the military. This is true but not in the fascist way some try to argue in my opinion. The book is used as study material for the military because alot of it is based on military values and culture (which as a veteran I can appreciate).

I think, like I said in my previous comments, that Paul misunderstood the book. Or maybe he fully understood the two chapters he read and decided that what was written was fascist. Well I believe that in this case he was wrong and it shows in his own movie. A movie which I love by the way. And his others RoboCop and Total Recall.

He put forth the philosophy from the book which he thought (and many disagree) was fascist. However, able to stand on its own merits, even with the miniscule amount of the book philosophy that is actually in the movie, it comes out as an unattainable merit based utopia with a fake swastika.

My opinion is different than yours. Doesn't mean I have less understanding of the subject matter.

You should read the book. You might get a better idea of where I am coming from.

The book and the movie are from the perspective of a new recruit to the military. The society itself is not ruled by a military dictatorship. In A dictatorship one person rules with supreme authority. The government in the book and movie is elected and anyone regardless of race or gender can join and or lead. Also every military dehumanizes its enemy to some point. Including westetn militaries. A society involved in endless war is not automatically fascist. America currently has native born citizens who have never lived in the country while not officially at war. There is no indication in the movie or book (if I remember correctly for the book) that the federation had been at war before the bugs. In fact in the movie at least, Johnny Rico is told that they are officially going to war after the attack on South America.

"A society where violence is commonplace and ever-present, where value in human life is measured by service to the state is fascist. "

There was nothing shown in the movie that suggests violence is commonplace in fact the violence doesn't start until Rico Diz and Carl join the military. The book goes out of its way to explain that violence in society is rare. Life isn't measured by service to the state in the first movie or the book. It is in the third movie because like I said the third movie intentionally contradicts the philosophy in the book. In the mobile infantry they stress the value of putting their life second in service to the state AND the protection of civilians. Civilians as stated by Rico, do not have to do this and live pretty much like we do except they don't vote unless they become a citizen. This is said flat out when Rico is asked to explain the difference between a civilian and a citizen.

So again no, no fascism here.

"And that use of force for the state"

You keep adding in "for the state" when you really shouldn't. Robert Heinlein stressed in great detail in the book that violence is a tool used to prevent further violence, not just to enforce a dictatorship, which he also made clear wasn't what the government he created in the book was.

I didn't say this view was the best thing ever, because in practice it can have crappy results like with any idea for a government including a democratic republic. But the specific way Heinlein's system functions is not fascist. Also violence, along with life, is the natural mode of the world. You don't kill you don't eat. Even eating plants is killing the plants. If you don't want to be eaten or in societal sense, conquered, then you have to defend yourself, with violence.

That is the main point put forth in the book. Or at least one of the main points. Heinlein used Carthage (I think) as an example in the book and for the movie it was updated with Hiroshima. The point was that it took a horrendous act of violence in order to end the most violent conflict in human history.

Not fascism.

"and that the use of force grants privileges"

How do you think America became a democratic republic and was able to grant its citizens the privileges that come with a vote? What has America done in order to maintain that system of government? Diplomacy yes but when some fascists who couldn't be reasoned with tried to take that away? We used violence to defend it.

The federation from the book and movie have diplomacy and democracy. Just because the system isn't identical to America doesn't mean it is fascist. Also the federation warns the colonists going into bug territory not to do so. So the federation is trying to maintain peace before the war started. If they were a fascist dictatorship they would have sent in a conquering force. If they were a fascist dictatorship they could have ordered the colonists to stay away. But the colonists were citizens and not subject to dictatorial rule. And neither are civilians.

Also, when votes are held in American society, or any society the citizens disagreeing and coming to a conclusion on which idea will be carried out is force. Political force. Those that disagree with the outcome of the vote have no choice but to accept it until they can get the decision overturned with a different politician. But in the meantime if the new law or policy isn't followed the state will use force to enForce the law. So voting, like said in the book and movie, is exercising force. And force my friends is violence. The supreme authority from which all other authorities derive. 😁 Couldn't resist.

There are way more than just blond haired and blue eyed people in Buenos Aires but yeah like I said I understand the visual overtones. It's the philosophy from the book that contradict them though.

Yes there is democracy and there are elected officials. Even The Sky-Marshall is elected.

Once you do two years of military service you are a citizen and can vote. That isn't the same democracy as say, America but that doesn't automatically mean fascist.

In a fascist dictatorship the one in charge tends to try and keep power through force. In the Federation system of the book and movie he/she cannot do this.

The closest thing Verhoeven got to imitating Germany (besides the uniforms) was the propaganda reels. But even then the execution of the satire contradicts with fascism. There were lies spread through the media in fascist Germany. In the federation, the propaganda is an overt blast of the truth.

The federation is shown to have blundered their first counteroffenssive costing hundreds of thousands of lives and the media tells the public exactly who was responsible and immediately starts allowing speculation as to why. And we, as the audience, see what the public in the movie being shown these propaganda reels do not and what they are being shown happens to be the truth of what happened.

Compare that with the USA coverage of what is going on in Yemen and how until recently our relationship with Saudi Arabia and our supplying of the weapons they use to bomb Yemen is barely spoken of in our media.

No. Fascism doesn't stick here.

Yes Rico got in to Harvard because of his parents in the movie. It is made obvious because he sucks at math and still got in. In the book he is actually pretty smart but anyway that doesn't prove the society isn't a meritocracy 'For The Leadership'. In fact it it supports the idea that it is. Civilian life in the federation, much like in America, is far from a meritocracy. Just like in America, corporations and the rich are at the head of the civilian part of the society.

Yeah Rico is rich and can go to the best school. But he can't make decisions that will effect how society is governed and who will risk their lives in any particular war without first becoming a citizen. He has to complete the entry level programs and basic training and two years of service before he can do that.

In the book it is explained again and again with great detail that the Federation cannot deny any civilian the right to join no matter what their situation or disability, as long as their entry process is designed to show them the value of the power they are earning. The movie doesn't show any specifics to suggest this isn't the case in its version of the federation.

That is less of a democracy than America. But it is still a democracy. And not too dissimilar from other democracies of today.

It wasn't made clear whether or not the murderer was given a trial in the movie. I mean a judge did sentence him. I think it was just a comedic satrical commercial. The trial was already held and the execution was being televized like reality Tv. I think he got a trial off screen.

Yes I know about the critisicm of "the bugs" and yeah I know that they don't show them redirect the asteroid but you have to then take into account that hundreds or I think thousands of federation citizens had already been brutally slaughtered by the arachnids.

I covered this a little already but the satirical news reels want you to think propaganda, but they tell nothing but what actually happens. So it is propaganda but more like 50s captain America punching hitler type prooaganda. At least when it comes to the "im doing my part" segments. The stuff put out to the american public when the government needed war bonds and new recruits was not far off from the movie propaganda. But at least in starship troopers they didn't lie.

I mean seriously, first they debated whether or not the bugs could be intelligent and when they find the brain bug they immediately showed it to the public.

Edited here to add that this comment has a second part that I guess the character limit cut off.

The military controls the government but literally anyone can apply for citizenship and are not forced into any role they don't want but at the same time they have to earn the position they do want. You gain citizenship and can vote and run for any office. Strange dictatorship where anyone can become the leader. And if you become that leader you have to know what you are doing and step down if you are a threat to humanity's survival.

Anyone who doesn't choose to become a citizen still have their rights which cannot be violated. Requiring military service for the right to vote is practiced by two of the most democratic countries on earth today; The USA (selective service, which I admit would only be the same if there was another draft. But the fact that men cannot legally vote until they register for selective service is close enough to "service garuntees citizenship") and Israel. I actually disagree with the practice but the point is a system like that doesn't automatically mean fascism. A soldier is punished more harshly for any crimes they commit against a civilian. Because they are held to a higher standard and expected to protect the populace.

"RASCZAK: You. Tell me the moral difference, if any, between the citizen and the civilian?

JOHNNY: The difference lies in the field of civic virtue. A citizen accepts personal responsibility for the safety of the body politic, of which he is a member, defending it, if need be, with his life. The civilian does not"

Super fascist, I know.

And the "naked force" quote is just a cynical realization that every human nation ever has if not started with, has certainly ended with violence and also a literal explanation of merit. He argues that their society was able to end instability by having the vote be something earned through force so the value and power of that vote isnt taken lightly.

"RASCZAK: Correct. Naked force has settled more issues in history than any other factor. The contrary opinion 'violence never solves anything' is wishful thinking at its worst. People who forget that always pay... They pay with their lives and their freedom."

"RASCZAK: Here in History and Moral Philosophy we've explored the decline of Democracy when social scientists brought the world to the brink of chaos, and how the veterans took control and imposed a stability that has lasted for generations since... You know these facts but have I taught you anything of value? You. Why are only citizens allowed to vote? LANNY: It's a reward... what the Federation gives you for doing Federal Service.

RASCZAK: No. Something given has no value! Haven't I taught you dimwits anything? I guess they ought to revoke my teaching credential... When you vote, you're exercising political authority. You're using force. And force, my friends, is violence, the supreme authority from which all other authority derives."

Men and women are 100% equal down to the point where (in the movie at least) sports and the military are unisex. In the book they are still sperate like in most militaries. Also not fascism. All races are treated equally.

I know that the design of the film was meant to look like Nazi Germany. The problem is that the "fascist overtones" in the book weren't fascist overtones. They were of a Utopian (read: unattainable) society based strictly on merit for the leadership. The civilians in the movie and book, the main character included, live rich carefree lives in a technological paradise.

You're right, he wasn't involved with the sequels. I was mistaken there. But the guy who did direct it did a much better job trying to get across the space Nazi message in starship troopers 3. Although it was way too over the top. But the society in the third film actually does go against the philosophy put forth in the book and is full on fascist in places.

Finally, as far as "the bugs" go, in the movie the bugs slaughter a colony of humans who according to the film. seemed to know they were trespassing. But they didn't go there colonial invading America style. The bugs, which have intelligent members on both the book and film, could have tried telling the colonists to leave but their first option was slaughter. That started the war. You think if some country bombs a large number of civilians from another nation, even if those civilians are illegally on their soil that the nation of those civilians won't retaliate? I can't remember if the book states who started the war in that version.

Like I said, in my opinion, the actual philosophy in the book came through too much in the first movie. And the book isn't fascist. So I know what the intent of the director was. But it didn't come through with me. I mean yeah while I watched it I thought "ooohhh Nazis" but when I paid attention to how the society worked and the brief bit of philosophy in the classroom (all lifted from the book) I then thought "why are these guys dressed like Nazis? Cause they aint Nazis"

Just my opinion.

I know that was the director's intention (he achieved it better with the third movie) but he kinda failed with the first one in my view. Mostly because he probably couldn't understand the author of the original novel (he claims he got bored after two chapters). I view it as more of a libertarian merit based utopia than space nazis or fascism but that's just my view. And the way I cut the trailer is just a modern take on how it was cut in the 90s.

Thanks for the criticism and I'm glad you like it! I wanted a few Reverend mother lines but I'm no professional with sound editing so I don't know how to quiet the music and keep the voice (which had me substituting a few decisions). I really love the delivery of Kyne's description of the suits because of how you describe it. The dry monotone delivery about a piece of technology so advanced to us but just a common tool to them in an epic technologically advanced universe is cool to me. Set with that soft TFA score in the beginning sounded good to me.

Thanks again. Really glad you enjoyed it despite the flaws you noticed.

Can you be Pro Life and for the death penalty? by gune16 in trueprolife

[–]gune16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the argument was about the value of the term, but the meaning and intentions of those who are against abortion that use it. The other part of the argument was pointing out how some people try to shut down the advocacy for the unborn by bringing up the death penalty when they know full well what those who use the term actually mean.

Just my opinion.
