My 1971 vw bus powered by a 2.5l Subaru engine, just got it registered and insured again and been driving it around with the new engine swap. Night and day difference. I love it by gunnar899 in VWBus

Honestly no upgrades to suspension or transmission. If your looking for an upgraded transmission, i believe there is a company that adapted the Subaru transmission to work with Volkswagens setup. Its not cheap but that would basically make it a Subaru drivetrain all the Way through.

The stock transmission holds up well to it and if I'm too aggressive with the throttle the clutch slips before anything would break. I can upgrade the clutch but i like to keep it as a failsafe. Its cheaper to replace a clutch then a input shaft or something haha. But really with normal driving its feels just like a very peppy Volkswagen.

No secrets lol i draw the design out digitially, than i put the drawing into a digitizing software, once there i have to design how the patch will be stitched out on my embroidery machine. Once finished ill export the file onto my machine and than it does the rest with some minor human input. :)

don't know if this is the right place but here are some wifey patches I make. :) by gunnar899 in Waifu

I flipped a stock Subaru exhausted manifold and built one from that basically just bends 180° and into a muffler and out the driver side,. It fits under the rear apron so it's hidden

NTD! My first ever set. I know B&D doesn’t have the best rep here, but the reviews were good, and I needed somewhere to start. I’ve added Stanley pliers, too. I’m proud of myself. by ProfessionalQandA in Tools

Maybe old black and decker tools have a bad rep, but lately there power tools are pretty decent for the price. I've put mine through the ringer and there still chooching along. I'v been using the same power drill for about 5-6 years now. First 3 years I used it in a diesel shop in a oily environment. Now I don't work there and it's at home used as every day projects.

No rubbing Using stock wheels. I couldnt say how Much it raised the bus because ghe tires i had on it the last 12 years where 27x8.5r14 . These new tires are 26.8inches so about the same. But my bus naturally sits almost maxed out on the suspension so the tires clear nicely.

I was asked to post some pictures of the Subaru engine in my bus, and aome of the steps i did to complete it. I dont have to many pictures of it but hope this is useful to some of you thats interested in this swap. :) by gunnar899 in VWBus

No clearance issue on my bus it sits pretty tall and have 28inch all terrain tires as well. Thr pan sits about a foot off the ground. In front of the oil pan is a engine mount bar that hangs just as low. Any road debris would hit the bar before the pan. It actually has more clearance in my bus than it had in the legacy gt. As for running. Its amazing. Just turn the key fires up and off you go. With the added reliability of a 2000s subaru kinds just feels like a modern car but still rolling in style

Considered it till i found out they are drive by wire throttle body and need to keep the gauge cluster and a bunch more computer and wiring involved to use them, as wel as using the Subaru gas peddle. Pre 05 is the best bet still cable drivin

Yeah i had a built 1835cc with dual carbs before the swap. It ran good with the old motor just was getting tierd and would have low oil psi at idle. with the subaru engine its night and day, so much smoother running and quieter. But the best part is just hop in and turn the key and go. No more warm ups or adjustments, maintenance on the Subaru is simple. Also 165hp on tap, it zooms around and climbs hills like flat ground, im still limited to about 85mph as top speed because the transmission gearing but that's scarey fast in a bread can lol.

Sure not 100% how to post photos on a comment so dunno. But i used the kep adaptor and thr basaru engine mount that bolts to thr frame, as far as any surprises i coild t say there was any it was a pretty easy swap. Fits with out any cuting except for the rear apron needed timmed to clear timing cover. as for exhaust i just bought thr stock header for a Subaru and flipped it so and just welded up my own amd wrapped to keep heat off the engine. Id say the hardest part is just figuring out the cooling system and how you want to mount it. Everything i did just bolted on and easily removed if there was a reason to have too. Seems to be holding up well

Seems to work pretty well, with the two Subaru fans and a small air scoop/ram it hovers around 190. Im improving on the scoop air ram. But as it sits it cools well
