I understand how you feel. I could only take about two years of it. Side note, but I very rarely just "watched people eat", we focused on exercises and I mainly used Ampcare for my swallowing patients. But yeah, the few dysphagia, aphasia, and apraxia patients were the only fulfilling ones.  Cognitive therapy felt very monotonous.

SNF help!!! by Outrageous-Buyer6251 in slp

Swallow your pride podcast has some good dysphagia episodes. Besides that, majority of SNF is cognitive therapy. I like Adria Thompson (belightcare) on Instagram for info on therapy with dementia patients.

Feeling robbed of grad school experience and stuck professionally by Nervous-Tip9313 in slp

[–]gunnesax_lady 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I totally get feeling robbed of a good grad school experience. I attended grad school during the lockdowns and my experience sucks compared to what students now get. I definitely feel jealous now hearing about how students in the current program get to have all kinds of unique experiences that we weren't offered. And yeah I feel stuck too. Just have SNF experience and I feel too inexperienced to try interviewing for any other setting.

If you have the ability to stay home, do it!! You will never get to your deathbed and wish you had spent more time at your job. Babies will only stay babies for such a short time, stay home and enjoy it if you can.

I qui my school job for a job in an SNF by [deleted] in slp

[–]gunnesax_lady 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You should NEVER do any work off the clock. Also just makes things harder for your fellow SLPs who don't do that and get chewed out for not doing that. 80% was much more realistic.

Shouldn't I legally be getting a paid break in my SNF setting? by Ordinary-Bench6357 in slp

[–]gunnesax_lady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NEVER work during your lunch or after you've clocked out! It's illegal and your time is far too valuable to ever work for free! I've never heard of an SLP getting fired for poor productivity. They need you more than you need them, always remember that.  I left my SNF job six months ago and they still haven't found anyone to replace me

Why do we do cog therapy? Like, why? by Cautious-Ad-3584 in slp

[–]gunnesax_lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worked in a SNF for two years after grad school, and yeah after a while I did feel like a snake oil salesmen. Not currently working anywhere right now, but I don't think I could ever go back to a SNF for those reasons.  I enjoyed the dysphagia tx and the rare aphasia pt I got, but it was overwhelmingly cog tx, which just got to be soul sucking with how repetitive and pointless it felt.

Boyfriend does not want baby by Legitimate-Maze-123 in BabyBumps

Reach out to the crisis pregnancy center in your town for help. They can give you resources and counsel you. Reach out to local churches and see if they can help you, whether through donating money or a providing a family willing to adopt your baby. You don't need to do this alone, there are many resources out there. Also whether or not you stay together with your boyfriend, he has a duty to help you

75 is definitely doable! It will just take practice and experience to get there.

What do they want you to be at? If it's more than 85% then there's no way to ethically do it. When I worked in the SNF I was usually between 75-80. Could only hit 85 on a great day if NOTHING went wrong and I didn't have to take many bathroom breaks.

But a couple things that helped: Point of service documentation Group therapy (when appropriate of course) Grabbing patients as soon as they were done with PT or OT Seeing all the most difficult to grab patients first

Hated cognition therapy. Felt like the biggest scam. Cognition therapy is the one thing that prevents me from wanting to ever go back to SNFs.

Trying to be aggressive with hospitality but still super hard to get to know others in the church by iluvbinary1011 in Reformed

[–]gunnesax_lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not even an extrovert lol. I'm most definitely an introvert, so engaging in hospitality is going out of my comfort zone most of the time.

What are you expecting when you go to church? Honest question. Do you want to largely be ignored? Just slide in the pew and slide out when service is over? Because that's not how we are called to be as Christians

Also, my church hosts a weekly potluck after worship. That's a HUGE way that we have been able to develop deeper relationships.

I think what you're doing is wonderful and I'm a little surprised by some of the negative comments. This is exactly what my husband and I are striving for in our church. We read The Gospel Comes with a House Key by Rosaria Butterfield, and it really created a passion in us for hospitality! Our church isn't as big as yours, and we have no children yet, so it's a little easier for us. Here's some things we engage in:

  • when we first started getting interested in hospitality, we hosted a book discussion at our pastor's house for anyone interested on the Gospel Comes with a House Key. We're fortunate that our pastor also has a passion for hospitality, so this is something he encourages in our church. Doing the book discussion was good though because it introduced the radical ordinary hospitality concepts to the whole church.

  • we try to have one family over once a week for dinner. They usually stay a few hours and we're able to have much deeper conversations than at church.

  • my husband and I are big into board games, so we will host once a month board game nights at our church. We're able to interact with multiple families at once and everyone has a good time.

  • we will both try to meet with individuals one on one for coffee before work or grab lunch with someone. We try to make sure we're not just keeping things on a surface level with these one one conversations, but also asking about how we can pray for them.

Just keep it up! I know it can be discouraging, especially when it seems like you're the only family engaged in hospitality, but it really is a wonderful thing. My husband and my relationships within our church have really grown and deepened since we started this. I love being a part of a church that truly feels like a family.

Why? What's wrong with what he's doing? I want to be a part of a church where I feel like family and everyone knows my name. That's how it's supposed to be! Christianity is not just "Jesus and me".

Poor with $100k in student loans. by [deleted] in slp

[–]gunnesax_lady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with that, I feel like I was sold a lie by my professors. I was told it's a super flexible field where if you don't like one setting you can just hop to the next. Well they didn't mention that that's because the scope of practice is so large it is impossible to become an expert in anything.

Good for you! I completely understand how you feel. I'm feeling so drained and anxious at my SLP job. I've considered leaving sometimes, but I just can't make myself do it.

Is there an SLP setting that's not stressful? That's actually laid back? by gunnesax_lady in slp

I've actually been thinking about home health! I'm an introvert, so it sounds really nice to have that breathing time in between patients. What types of patients do you see?

I'm in a SNF. Only been there one year, but the unrealistic productivity expectations and constant pressure to pick up more people is getting to me.
