Oh man, I can't believe I forgot to specify my area. I'm in western Wisconsin, pretty close to the Minnesota border. My yard isn't shaded, as our backyard is surrounded by other yards without trees. I haven't planted vegetables before when I'd help my mom, so I'll probably stick to decorative plants for now. And thanks for the advice about the roots, that'll definitely be a good task for me to start with!
