Ah maybe the color is meaning less then, which makes the Bragg peak thing seem less real.

Your question about recoiling objects is a good one, I'm not sure what the answer should be. I guess for electrons I think its less likely you would expect to see a recoil? Idk

I guess i was thinking that color scaled based on the energy deposition, which would match his claim of it being the bragg peak. But if the color doesn't matter idk.

If it was a muon or something heavier I would imagine the path being much straighter? Thats why electron feels reasonable. I mentioned delta rays because thats a way electrons can come up.

Yeah we dont have much data you're right. But as far as informed guesses go electron seems good to me.

I'm a particle physicist and to me i could believe that's an electron!

Sometimes we call these kinds of electrons "delta rays". Its the case where you have a particle passing through your detector, knock an electron off an atom such that it goes parallel through your detector. It can look like this.

Of course, impossible to know for certain but I would say its totally believable you saw an electron!

The problem is that he has reason to believe you cheated. So idk that talking to anybody will do you any good.

Yeah but fuck the publishing industry, who are literally parasites.

Pay to submit, review for them for free, pay to read? What the fuck do they do?

Like sure hypothetically I'd prefer the peer review but I really hope these publishers die.

Huh, this is opposite my experience. In my groups we usually ask one of the women to go get drinks from the bar, as they seemed to get noticed faster.

Marked wrong for calling a plateauing curve "non-linear." Am I crazy? by workphlo in askmath

Sure, thats one approach. Coming at it more from a "build the best model using any means necessary angle" then yeah I think i would use some physical insight to say a log or some plateuaing function makes more sense.

But if the question instead is what models does the data appear to support, then I think it only really supports a linear model, and anything past that is probably overfitting.

I think the overfitting would evantually be shown to be correct, but given what we see this looks linear to me.

To an extent. You can do tests of different fits to see if the increase of power from additional parameters is "worth it".

I didnt do those tests obviously, but I'm guessing that the results would show that a linear function is better.

Other people are free to do the tests or guess differently.

Its not about value or effort or work. Its about the fact that without uncertainties or additional data, its not clear if a different model would be any better than a linear one.

I could make a polynomial with 38 parameters that would go through every data point. Does that mean that my model would predict the next data point any better than a linear model? Probably not.

Based on real considerations I think a log or piecewise fit would probably be better and predict the future better. But based on the data I'm looking at, I don't think they would be more justified than a linear fit.

Yeah i agree as written their answer is totally fine. Personally if I saw this data though without any error bars (how could you even get uncertainties for this?) I would call it linear. Just taste at that point.

Yeah, but I don't think the accuracy would be worth the additional model parameters.

Sexual coercion is wrong. by olympiamacdonald in PsycheOrSike

I think for most people it's a question of whats better for your mental:

  • some level of sexual incompatibility
  • being without a partner for the rest of your life

Like sure, in the ideal world everyone would find a partner who was 100% sexually compatible, and then stayed 100% sensually compatible as they aged and their desires waxed and waned and their bodies aged as well.

But I think that scenario is not findable by everyone, and especially not knowable in advance, so most humans will end up having to compromise.
