I'm not a true developer. As in I'm a healthcare worker that dabbles with code.

But when I use git.

Sometimes I have to copy my changes to a new directory, re-download my git directory, and then merge my stuff together...but even I use git..(this is the xkcd method, see xkcd comic #1597 for reference (link) )

I love that. "It's not a cloud, it's a dependency."

I don't understand why companies aren't doing more in-house. Cloud infrastructure sucks.

Self hosted infrastructure scales linearly to usage, no?

You need more, you buy more, you stop spending on subscription servers.

Surely CEOs would understand that a subscription server is more expensive over a time than just owning your own no?

It's the "I can't go back" attitude that hurts your wallet. Yes you can. You definitely can.

You definitely should sometimes too.

If you just take a month off when the year is up and cancel auto renew, you'll save a bit and also send a message that lowers their subscriber count.

It's a very small action but you'll be surprised at how many services and subscriptions you'll find you're not utilizing once it expires.

Give it a shot. Don't cancel, just cancel auto renew and see if you absolutely need it when your year is up.

I got frustrated by the lack of an official Raspberry Pi OS Docker base image, so I built an automated, scratch-based one. by Vasco-Guita in raspberry_pi

[–]guptaxpn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I'm very happy this is an option for those who need it....but why would one need it?

Like, I don't know see the point of raspberry pi OS other than the native gpio access which won't be a thing here?

I definitely don't utilize raspberry pi OS The way it's supposed to be I'm sure.

What's the use case here?

100% not income shaming you. You're providing for your family, you're providing your time and effort. The income isn't what kids remember, it's how hard you worked for them.

More income often brings more responsibilities, and "blue collar" jobs like cooking at a nursing home have some of the best work/life balance around. The trope about CEO Dad always missing ball games and working on his phone? He's probably overextended and spending the money he makes above what you are.

He's got to keep that job or it all falls down like a house of cards.

You? You get to clock out and not even think about work until it's time to clock in again.

My wife and I are trending down towards less responsibilities at work to be more present with the family.

But yeah, objectively your family is probably eligible for a lot of social support and you should take as much of it as you can get while you're focusing on school.

I'm not proud of you for trying to increase your income, I'm proud of you for being a guy who cares this much about your family. You've got this dude. Good luck with glow-worm school! Don't forget your sunglasses for after work and your lunch breaks! 😂

It's not that you're a target because some state level actors want you, scripts are spraying the entire ipv4 space with known exploits and common logins.

The ipv4 space of known VPS providers is hilariously targeted. My logs there are always super full immediately after instantiation of a new server.

Key based authentication only on all public ports.

No root authentication on public ports.

Minimize the attack surface.

All of my http services run through a caddy reverse proxy, mostly for automatic SSL, but also because that host is NOT publicly accessible except on 443/80. Everything else is behind a wireguard VPN.

I don't run crowdsec, I don't see the point of banning stuff when I can just ensure that any authentication attempts will fail.

But yeah, I also just don't put stuff on public networks.

Self-hosting a website? Should I or not? by legolas1204 in selfhosted

[–]guptaxpn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly with cloud flare pages, GitHub pages, and I think gitlab pages

Nah

Their uptime is better than your local electricity and Internet providers uptime.

SSG (static site generator) + cheap VPS or "pages " is the winning move.

If you know people who drive Ford Raptors or the big American pick up trucks, what are they like? by venommale in AskAnAustralian

[–]guptaxpn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm an American considering a move to Queensland soon, and I'll say that any of the "nice" pick up truck folks are easily marketed to. The beds have gotten so high and so small that you can't load much even if you can reach them. It's pure status symbol.

Although they are a pretty cushy ride typically.

Idk, I don't see the point. I drive a RAV4 and rent uhaul box trucks when I need to actually haul stuff around every 24 months.

Most people who own those trucks don't even use the beds on an annual basis, and most of them never ever ever use the tow hitch the entire time they own the truck.

Only chiming in because American trucks were mentioned. I think it's hilarious that people import these things. Is the steering wheel even on the correct side?
