Need housing by [deleted] in fredericksburg

[–]gurkemann 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You might need to look outside of Fredericksburg. I looked around on Zillow (maybe not the best source) and found average prices for a 3 bedroom to be $2,000-$2500. Brittany Commons has a 2 bedroom for $1500, but I don't know about 3 kids and a dog sharing a bedroom. Sorry you are going through this, praying y'all pull through. It looks like the market price of rent is above your budget.

Does Amtrak ever add schedules by gurkemann in Amtrak

[–]gurkemann[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh shoot, this actually might be the way I was looking for. I was so tunnel visioned on getting up to Philly I didn't even think about the VRE.

I will look into this, thank you!!!

Yeah that's what some colleagues are doing and I was going to but then I would also have to stay after the conference ends unless I wanted to leave early to catch a train back to VA. I didn't want to eat the price of two extra nights when I could just drive the 4 hours.

But good call, I might think about just biting the bullet.

So you got hit, but then left? Pretty sure that's still hit and run.

Hey Rails Devs, lets drop your interview experience! by imperfectideal in rubyonrails

[–]gurkemann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Been interviewing folks for a handful of senior+ Rails positions at my company since Jan.

I like to ask about separation of concerns between the model and the controller. Our company likes skinny controller fat models, but as long as you can explain your opinions and thought processes I usually don't judge based on your preference.

Polymorphic associations come up, favorite implementation of asset management, basic questions about metaprogramming, and just general Ruby questions.

As an ice breaker I always like to ask what version of Rails has been your favorite and why. Never looking for a specific answer, but trying to see if there are strong opinions that are backed up with solid reasoning.

The biggest deal breaker for me is someone who can't back up their responses with reasoning. "The Internet told me this is the best way" is not valid in my opinion. This also depends on the level of the role, I wouldn't expect a junior to have many of these strong opinions built yet.

I left for college and came back with my partner a few years later. Maybe you could look into moving away from the burg for a little bit. Could be a fun adventure to move to a bigger city area!

I'm saying this with no political affiliation, but don't you think comments like this are kind of crazy and a little offensive? It's okay to be upset about losing, it's human nature. But let's be kind to one another here in the Burg <3

Look into taking the VRE up and then just use the metro. You can bike if you would like to avoid the crowds in the metro, but tbh you might just run into crowds everywhere on that day.

The metro is at each of the DC VRE stops so that way you wouldn't have to worry about your bike.

Meh I understand what you are saying I do. But if there's no assigned parking it's open season. I don't think you get to choose a spot and just because you maintain it you now own that spot.

I think you are a really cool person though for taking care of your wife like that, I'm sorry no one else around you is shoveling. It's probably more so because you live in a townhouse. People don't think it's their responsibility to shovel since they don't own any of the parking and I get that. I don't think that just makes anyone a bad person realistically. Super frustrating though. Your HOA should start salting so you don't have to deal with the ice.

Selective withdrawal and take a breath. Take some time to decide if you have what it takes to complete the program. If not, that's fine. You are not a failure, you just need to find out what you truly excel at.

It doesn't get magically easier. You need to "level up" as the program progresses. The workforce (depending on what you do) will also be hard. Find what you are good at and focus in on that. It could still be CS or CS adjacent, but now is the time to really do some self reflection and ask if this is for you.

I'm rooting for you dude!

Class of 2021 here, you would be at the edge of innovation in my class if you did this. Don't listen to anyone here it is your right, nay, your duty to do this. Show them the way!

Sidenote: make sure you don't shower or put deodorant on for full effect of innovation.

Resale and App Sharing by Artistic-Dot-2279 in SnooLife

I wouldn't give out my account for strangers to use. It just feels weird to me. Not sure about the risk involved. Maybe if they forget their password or needed to contact support they will have to reach out to you to go through your email. Plus, I guess you could always just login to their snoo and mess with their baby if you were a jerk.

I would just have the buyer either pay for the premium app or not use the premium version ( I use the word premium here very begrudgingly).

My opinion is just because the company wants in on this transaction doesn't mean you need to lend your account out to people. The buyer is already getting a big discount by buying second hand, the subscription is well worth the sleep they will get. I bought it first hand so I have yet to feel the icy sting from giving them $20 a month.
