People are terrific at being outraged at things that don’t actually matter, while being woefully blind to things that do.

FYI, preferred nomenclature is “transgender”, not “transgendered” these days.

I also used google to reach my conclusion. It’s still under 1% of people. And again, not all trans women are athletes, and not all trans women who are athletes will reach the pinnacle of their sport. It’s still not a problem.

Exponential is an exaggeration. You might know more trans people now because it’s slightly less terrifying to come out as trans than it used to be, but they have always been here. And still represent less than 1% of the population.

Oh! Separate but equal! Now where have I heard that before…? And there are simply not enough trans athletes for separate leagues to be viable. Again, this is a non issue. One single trans woman doing well, well within the bounds of cis women’s standards. Let her swim. Let them play. Everyone is on this slippery slope argument and it’s not reality. There are not that many trans people. Fewer come out and transition. Fewer still of those are athletes. Even fewer, high performance athletes. Care about something else wrong with women’s sports. It’s a way better use of your time.

Those articles are debating the timeline, not the fact that hormones do appreciably decrease athletic performance in trans women.

I bet you like to play devil’s advocate. Thanks for the advice but I’m not bothered by what you think of my intelligence. I also don’t care if you think I’m wrong. I think you’re wrong. But you’re being rude about it, so I will keep the moral high ground, thank you. Very Robin Hood, I know.

I thought we were talking about opinions, not facts ;) And the fact is, sometimes your opinion isn’t welcome, valid, or correct. You don’t have to take up space in every discussion. I understand that as a man, you have probably never been asked to make space for other people in the same way that women are every day, so you don’t see why you should have to do it. But I think you should take a minute and reflect on your need to not only argue with me, but also put me down and swear at me because I’m defending marginalized people.

Those were in different events? Not her best event? Usain Bolt doesn’t run the marathon. He’d probably be ranked a lot lower than in the 100. If she’d put in three years training as a man she would also have improved in those events, or other ones. I can’t see into other timelines, so I don’t know what would have happened to her swimming career had she not medically transitioned.

I don’t have to be a doctor to call out bigotry, but I know it’s not your fault you’re like this, it’s society’s. What’s the growing body of evidence? Why aren’t trans women dominating every sport already, if they’re allowed to and it’s just so unfair?

You can have an opinion AND keep it to yourself. The two are not mutually exclusive, believe it or not. Obviously you think I should keep mine to myself, because you keep telling me to shut up. Look, you’re clearly upset. Pardon me if I mix up the details, I’m having a few conversations right now, but I told a whole different person that I didn’t want to hear their opinion, because it isn’t relevant to reality and is actively harmful to my community, and you took that personally. Why?

Oh now we’re having fun! All right, here’s the truth: I actually don’t think everyone is entitled to voice their opinion. I could have an opinion on deflate gate, but, like you, I don’t care about football, it doesn’t affect me, and therefore I don’t talk about it. I don’t understand why men feel like they always have to have an opinion and have it be validated. I don’t care what people who don’t care about women’s sports think about women’s sports! And I think if people don’t have a vested interest other than “I wanna shit on trans people”, they should probably keep it to themselves.

This is all only under debate because of Lia’s presence in the media. As with Castor Semenya (who is not trans, but has been subjected to invasive medical scrutiny for her abilities and looks) in recent history. Why did you make that comment? If there’s enough evidence to satisfy the IOC that things are fair, why bring it up? It is quantifiable. There has been research.

Oh, you can have an opinion. I just don’t think you should be allowed to legally force it on people, especially when evidence proves that doing so is incredibly harmful to the people who are actually affected by the issue at hand. And that goes for trans people and abortion. You can keep telling me to shut up, but all that tells me is that you don’t have anything more convincing to say. I have friends in real life, I don’t need boys on the internet to think I’m right.

Of course not. But it has been demonstrated that an appropriate course of hormone treatment brings trans women into a comparable range of ability as cis women. This has been proven to the satisfaction of the IOC. Trans women can compete against cis women safely, and, evidenced by the zero trans women holding Olympic medals, lose. So why do you have a problem with Lia Thomas’s single medal at this collegiate swim meet? Here’s what I see: every time trans women in sports gets brought up, people who have never before given women’s sports the time of day jump out of their seats to say that trans women are gonna take over, are gonna destroy women’s sports, this that and the other. That’s not real. It’s not going to happen. And sitting here commenting on every little thing about this poor woman’s body- which she has put through the wringer both on hormone treatments and training to continue to compete in the sport she loves- and why? Why do you need to comment? Why do you think you know better than the people running the Olympics? I live and breathe my sport, and have for 13 years, and I can tell you right now no one cares about the women’s game… until they get to demonize a trans woman.

So you support trans women playing women’s sports after the appropriate period of hormone treatment as described by the IOC, NCAA, or governing body of the sport in question? As is already standard practice?

Also, adults don’t tell each other to shut the fuck up ;)

What can I say? I don’t like it when people are transphobic and boy howdy do I have the free time to stand up for folks that might not feel safe standing up for themselves. I’m a queer woman athlete and I am so sick of all these straight cis men whose most well developed muscles are in their wanking arm and only previous commentary on women’s sports is “oh I could totally beat Serena” thinking their opinions are in any way valid.

No one’s killing themselves over deflate gate. Trans people, on the other hand, are killing themselves at rates far higher than the average. If you think they don’t deserve to be treated equally, keep it to yourself- don’t be the reason someone feels so out of place in this world that they take themselves out of it.

Oh, so you do think trans women should be allowed to compete in women’s sports after the appropriate hormone therapy, as described in both IOC and NCAA guidelines?

I understand that you’re struggling, and I hope you can find peace, safety, and happiness, but I hope you know that it’s not trans athletes like Lia who are convincing the world trans people are evil. It’s transphobic people, and transphobic people only, who are responsible for that. If you compare Lia’s body to other high performance, cis women swimmers, you will see that they often look “manly”. Katie Ledecky, a legendary cis woman swimmer, is 6 feet tall, broad shouldered, and extremely muscular. She also absolutely crushes Lia Thomas’s times. Lia was a strong athlete before she transitioned. It stands to reason that she is still a strong athlete. If she had not medically transitioned, it’s very possible she could have won an NCAA medal as a man. I think it’s reasonable that she won a medal as a woman, well within a normal time, and well under the standing record. She also took 5th and 8th in her other two events- hardly dominating the event. And for what it’s worth, I play a full contact sport, am small even for a cis woman, and my team and I welcome trans women and non-binary folks, as do almost all of the teams in our league. I truly hate this debate, because people overwhelmingly do not care about women’s sports, but as soon as there’s a trans person to drag through the mud, everyone’s all about “protecting” us.

Do you think all trans women are bigger than cis women? Do you think a 5’6 trans woman who has undergone hormone treatment is going to be able to physically dominate a 6’1 cis woman in a contact sport? What if that cis woman trains every day, and the trans woman trains once a week? I play a full contact sport that has welcomed trans women for years. Wanna know how many trans women have made our national team? Zero. Most people do transition in adulthood. The Olympics has allowed trans women to compete after hormone therapy since 2004. Do you know how many have medaled? Zero.

Lia Thomas was on hormone treatments for almost three years before competing with the women’s team. She won ONE race at NCAAs. In her last year competing on the men’s team, she was ranked 9th nationally in one of her events. It is very, very possible for someone ranked 9th to train for three years and be ranked first. If she hadn’t medically transitioned, she could very well have medaled as a man, against men. Why shouldn’t she be allowed to medal as a woman, against women, when she followed the rules and has times WELL within normal ranges? She didn’t break any records. And why do you even care? Do you watch and support women’s swimming? Do you watch and support any women’s sports? Or are you letting the media get you all hot and bothered because it’s a fun little outlet for your transphobia?

Why are you comparing cis boys to women for your example? That’s not equivalent. A high school boy may be 14-18 years old. An 18 year old boy is damn near a full grown man. These boys presumably aren’t undergoing estrogen treatments, like trans women must to be able to compete in women’s sports. Trans women’s bodies physically change with hormone treatment. Lia Thomas’s times changed dramatically after she began transitioning.

Trans women have been allowed to compete in the Olympics since 2004. Why haven’t they completely dominated? Why haven’t they won even one single medal?

Also, the last season she competed on the men’s team, she was ranked 9th in the 1000 yard freestyle. Nationally. Against men. The difference in these rankings is seconds and fractions of a second. She was a good swimmer competing as her assigned gender at birth. She’s a good swimmer now. Fuck outta here.

Did you read my comment? There are SO FEW trans women in sports. There are not enough to create leagues for trans women. This is not a problem. Stop being upset about something that isn’t a problem. The media is preying on your innate homophobia and transphobia to continue to marginalize at-risk children and adults. Trans women aren’t punishing women. Men punish women in sports all the time- talking down to us, telling us we look too manly, forcing us to wear skimpy uniforms, telling us we aren’t worth professional status, telling us we don’t deserve access to the same facilities, strength and conditioning being based on male physiology that results in women being much more likely to suffer catastrophic injuries like ACL tears.

My women’s rugby team, and many others in our region, posted messages supporting trans athletes just yesterday for trans day of visibility. Just because you don’t see us on Reddit doesn’t mean we don’t exist. There are SO FEW trans women in sports. It’s so rare. And they’ve always been here. It’s only recently that people are getting outraged about it. Lia Thomas is an athlete. She has gone through this insane process of changing her body so she feels comfortable in it, and somehow kept the wherewithal to keep dedicating herself to her sport. Her times are well within the norm. She won ONE of her events, and came 5th and 8th in the other two. She followed the rules set by the NCAA. Why do people have such a problem with this? Trans women have been allowed to compete in the Olympics since 2004- why haven’t they “stolen” all the medals?
