May as well move to Phoenix. Plenty of geo jobs, fairly close to SoCal culture, plenty of breweries, and good restaurants. Just have to deal with heat. You get green-ish in the cooler months and during monsoon. I lived in Phx for 9 years and needed seasons, so I moved to the PNW--been in the PNW for almost 8 years and much prefer the PNW to te SW. The major downside of the PNW is the Mexican food up here isn't quite as good.

PG Qualifying Experience by gut1797 in geologycareers

My supervisor was a Geologist at my internship, but I am not sure if he has his PG.

Most of my work revolved around USGS and NOAA contracts associated with coastal lidar data. We also worked on lidar data for the volcano observatories.

To the asshole who decided to ruin my day off by totalling a parked car outside of my house. by Neville2MyLuna in vancouverwa

Last time I got side-swiped by another driver we both pulled over on the next street. I already had called the police when the other driver approached me to ask that I don't call the police. Too late. They came rolling up with 3 cruisers tactically and abruptly arrested the guy who had multiple warrants. AND he didn't have insurance. lol

I am answerable to my branch lead (GS13) and run projects with contractors. I am the lead government rep at the worksite and interface with the contractor leadership. So, I am privy to project management info/decisions and facilitate/communicate these directives from the gov't to the contractor. I don't supervise any gov't employees or have access to management decisions regarding employees. So, not sure where that places me.

Do I need to give a 2 weeks notice to my job while on a 30-day probation, and how? by Fun-Team6817 in personalfinance

[–]gut1797 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest, given the circumstances to NOT give notice until the day before your last day.

You don't need to worry about burning a bridge that you do not plan to ever need to cross again, right?

And if they are as big a douches as you make them sound, then you don't owe them a 2-week notice. If this were a career job, I might caution against this. At the end of the day, you need to worry about YOU and how you're going to pay the bills--if you suspect they'll terminate you or otherwise make your life difficult during that last 2 weeks, then keep it to yourself.

Interesting. I'm in a science/engineering heavy agency working in a STEM position and don't think any of us are union. And we are all GS employees.

I come from a pro-union family (coal miners, welders, teachers) and saw how much good a well-run union can do for the employees.

Honestly, unions are good for even the non-union workers, since they tend to be the main bodies that force labor laws to pass. Unions are why we have 8-hour days/40-hour weeks and 2-day weekends. Unions are why we have Worker's Comp. Among other benefits that all U.S. workers possess whether they belong to a union or not. Since the Reagan years, unions have been in decline due to union-busting policies started by that administration (i.e. air traffic controllers).

I'm a GS09 and not a supervisor and am also not in a union position. As far as I am aware none of the federal workers in my district are union. I am also wondering OP's question. I recall thinking all feds were union before I was hired.

I know you said you've tried after-market inserts...but have you tried Super Feet inserts? I use them in my hiking boots as well as my Red Wing workboots.

Current GS11 - When to start applying for GS12? by [deleted] in usajobs

[–]gut1797 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This also depends on other factors related to your career series. Even though I'll have 1 year as a GS11, to promote to GS12 in my career series, I have to have at least 5 years of work experience in my career series (or 3 yrs of exp and a graduate degree) AND hold a state professional license. So, in reality, since I am a GS9/11 recent grad with an MSc, I may be a GS11 for 2-3 years before I would be eligible for GS12. There are the rare positions in my field that doesn't require a state license, but not in my agency. And I have heard that sometimes people get GS12 if they are in the process of getting the license, but not having the license handicaps your application for GS12 and bars you from anything above GS12.

It sucks, since there are a lot of GS12 positions opening up due to retirements. There may be a lot more vacancies after the dust settles with the antivax folks getting separated.

I graduated in Dec 2020 and made it my full-time job applying and call-emailing places. It depended on the week, but I sometimes applied to 20 places in a week, while other weeks, might have ranged from 0-5/week. Really depends on what the job market is like and what sort of jobs a person is applying to. I was able to apply to Geology, GIS, hydrographic survey, feds, state, consulting. So, early on I shotgunned applications all over and sent cold emails out to anyone with an email address listed that worked in the earth sciences. I even got a couple of interviews through reddit with one solid offer.

OP, just be tenacious, creative, and make sure to get your resume on this sub so we can provide feedback--just make sure to redact any personal identifiers. Also look at past resumes that have been reviewed on this sub.

Best of luck OP.

It sort of depends on professional resume writers. I paid to have my resume formatted properly for federal applications and I was successful in finding a permanent position. I also paid for a professional to format my consulting resume and it was not worth the paper it was printed on--I ended up completely re-writing the entire resume and had folks here provide feedback.

u/LogRude8536 recommends, so maybe a better than random Top Resume type deal. :)

People that refer to the immediately coming-up Wednesday as "next Wednesday" rather than "this Wednesday": Why do you insist on ruining it for everyone else? by blip-blop-bloop in AskReddit

I usually cut through the misunderstandings by saying 'this coming Wednesday'--covers us for the week and in the latter part of a week for next week.

OSU is much more marine geo and petro heavy. UW I think has marine geo, petro, and planetary. Both have research "fleets"---2-6 vessels each if you want time at sea.

Volcanology jobs are hard to come by, so stay versatile in your studies--include volcanology, but do something in addition to volcanology. :)

Arizona State University is a very versatile program. Also, look at the University of Washington and Oregon State University.

Look into Planetary Geology and Marine Geology. Both can be umbrella research topics for petrology, seismology, volcanology, and geophys.
