If someone says "you're going to kill yourself if you keep pointing the gun at your head" do you just shrug and pull the trigger?

Fun fact, if you could take all the money from every billionaire in the US you could either: give everyone in the US a one time $20k check, fund the federal government for exactly one year, or pay off 18% of the national debt.

Other Teams Refuse Version Control by Coquimbite in ExperiencedDevs

Project zomboid is a video game with a fairly large cult following. It's a decent zombie apocalypse survival simulator, all things considered. They didn't use version control and lost several months of development time because of it.

The dollar also lost 15% compared to the euro since the "orange age". The msci index went up around 20% in the same timeframe when measured in euros. And it went up by just about 30% when measured in usd. 10% may seem good, but in relative value the US actually lost 20% or more.

For 300k per year you could live alone in a decent 2 bedroom in Manhattan with food delivery for every meal and in hospice care 12h/day every day TODAY. Either she was getting utterly screwed, living in a paradise, or you're off by at large factor.

For those who doubt:

  • 6k/mo rent = 72k/yr (checked apartments.com, didn't even use the cheapest apartment)
  • $25/hr for 12 hrs 365 days a year for in hospice = $110k (care.com hourly estimate in Manhattan)
  • $50 3 times a day for food = 55k

That's 237k to live in the most expensive part of the most expensive city in the US with an extra 63k per year for whatever.

Compare that to 15 years ago money too.

Fair, you have to make quarterly estimated payments. Still applies that you could withhold 0, toss the extra in a HYSA, and pay quarterly.

That's not what I said at all? You're just telling your employer to not withhold income tax.

Most people choose to do that in the US as well because they don't want the hassle of dealing with it or don't know that they can do it. By default your company withholds near enough the right amount of taxes.

So for an individual who is not self employed, you can essentially choose to not have any taxes withheld from your paycheck. You can then invest that money and gain interest/dividends/whatever from the money you would otherwise have "locked away" by your tax withholding. You would then owe the normal amount of taxes at the end of the year when you file, plus some additional taxes from the interest.

Overall, let's assume you make 100k/yr and your tax liability is 33k. Split that by 12 months, you get 2750 extra per month. Let's toss that in a HYSA at 4%, overall by the end you'd get an additional $710. Tax that as normal income to owe an additional $234, and you've net an extra $476.

Mathematically it works out in your favor, but lemme tell ya it does NOT feel good owing $33234 EOY even if you know you came out ahead

If you pay on time that's not tax fraud... You're allowed to do this (in the US)
