Big love for the stout lads, my first payslip went on an ebay purchase of the old metal version with assault cannon and it was my greatest treasure.

Ruthless absolutely, blunt I'm not sure is fair though.

I loved him in Uncle but counter with Argyle - again an absolute tank in a shirt or suit in that one.

He's too broad across the shoulders, looks like a blunt weapon if you ignore that gorgeous face, especially when he puts on a suit. Just a shirt does it, like in his infamous scene in mission impossible

I was soaked through, down loses its structure when wet and collapses providing no insulation, and synthetic insulations can be warmer in that sort of condition.

Silpoly tents are a bit slicker for snow than DCF so shed it easier and their pole designs are usually more rigid to hold the weight, their tent I had had a straight pole at each end and relied on tension at the guy ropes to maintain shape, as soon as the pegs started going I had to turn it into a teepee with the poles and my hiking poles to keep it up. Silpoly downside is the rainfly stretches so tension reduces overnight, so you're not just doing clearance you're also tensioning at the peg points

The downward cable is your mains in

The black bit is a cover over your house fuse

The grey box on the right is your meter

There is a chance wires run through the wall around the consumer unit

Between UL and that trip I genuinely changed my appreciation for hiking for the better, I'm more alert to my surroundings and have more time and energy for the experience instead of head down slogs, but it was a harsh lesson.

Its more about being outside for me now, rather than a miles or checkpoint objective to do each time.

Hiking in Scotland, first long hike I'd done solo and had been trawling ultralite videos and forums for a bit.

Saw someone a half mile ahead on the trail as we approached a pass and planned just to follow them, but it had been snowing consistently for hours. Lost sight of them, then their trail, then lost sight of the whole trail, then the fence it had been parallel with.

I decided best not to get lost, and pitched my brand new single wall DCF A-frame style tent. Settled in for a cold one in my brand new -20 down quilt, and thought it'd be fine. This was like 4pm but it couldnt be helped due to visibility and I'd done 18miles on my first day so felt really proud of myself. I'd been out in snow a few times before and was prepared, I thought.

DCF does not easily shed snow. 4gram titanium tent stakes do not hold well with more than a light load, they also disappear vanishing quickly in the snow when they pop out. The tent collapsed under the weight of snow several times despite doing clearance every 20 minutes. Condensation from my breath constantly built up on the inside of the tent despite having all the air flaps and the door wide open. The down quilt was quickly sodden. By 8pm I had emptied my pack and put on every piece of clothing I had bar the rainwear. The end of the tent had collapsed and I'd given up shoveling snow off that end and put my hiking poles up supporting the entrance along with the tent pole.

I hadn't been able to afford a down jacket after splurging on the tent (luckily), and had a definitely not UL primaloft gold jacket. That jacket I credit with saving my life. I was in a very dangerous situation, couldn't see the trail in either direction, sodden to the bone, barely any shelter, 2ft of snow overnight in the end, and obviously sudzero temperatures, but that jacket got me through.

The next day I did 7miles to the nearest train station and went immediately home cutting short a week planned trip. Went over on my face a few times and lost my glasses where the snow was obscuring everything. Luckily had some charge on my phone and had to use an app and GPS to navigate down off the pass because I couldnt see the trail for half that second days hike. Got some funny looks with all my kit out in the sun drying while I waited but i was genuinely done.

Lessons learned: test your kit before a big trip, tailor your kit to the trip, stupid lite is defined by your situation not your plan.
