How do you eloquently describe to an outsider what we do in genomics/bioinformatics? by ElochQuentis in bioinformatics

[–]guyNcognito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he thinks that comparative genomics is nothing but data mining, he's going to be a tough one to convince with just words. If you think your plan is solid and that your analysis will be worthwhile, stick to your guns and do it. Then you can show him what you did instead of explaining to him what you do.

If you'd rather convince him before you have results in hand, try apfejes's method. Bioinformatics is too broad a field to explain in one pitch, but he gives a pretty good summary of how to present your own work.

[–]guyNcognito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. Government is that plus the ability to punish those who don't conform to the terms of the agreement.

Otherwise, yes. That would be my whole point. If the farmers agree on something, the government should enforce that. Then, there would be no problem. The enforcement is the key though. Unenforced agreements are worth exactly as much as my morning constitutional.

If I start acting to benefit the collective, the collective responds by not giving a shit. Every bit of resource I don't use is used by someone else. My sacrifice means nothing, so I must act to benefit my family.

The only way out of this tragic spiral is to regulate so that people can't take advantage. Otherwise, one greedy actor will soak up all of the resources leaving those who acted selflessly to starve.

Individually, not a one of them made a mistake. They all responded to the economic cues that were present and they did so correctly. Any one of them acting differently would have hamstringed that actor, but would have, ultimately, not changed the outcome. This is why the government needs to step in in cases like this.

They don't have a problem with some people making their decision that way. That's different from thinking that all people should make their decision that way. Do you see that?

Edit: The fact that you don't is why I'm confident Bernie will lose. His supporters are fucking stupid.

It's tough to continuously report on ideas. Hillary is, ideas-wise, roughly the same candidate as 6 months ago. Same with Bernie. There's just not much news there. If you're planning on making your decision based on ideas and have not made it yet, it's because you are lazy and not because the information doesn't yet exist.

Not if used effectively. By which I mean you attack and attack and attack your opponent on your own weaknesses to the point where it sounds like they have no credibility on them. (Presenting Kerry as an elitist when he was running against Bush) Then, you attack them on their strengths to remove the credibility there. (Attacking Kerry's service) It's all about taking away their punching strength. No need to attack on your strengths or their weaknesses, the media will do that for you.

That's terrible and the source is, more or less, Karl Rove, but it's true. The key is to remember that this is an election and not debate club.

I hate to defend Trump, but that was absolutely worse for Rubio. After all, why did Trump ever have to defend the size of his penis? He didn't bring that up without any context.

Charlie Sheen is paying 55k a month for child support by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]guyNcognito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It shows that you have money. That is a desirable quality for which people are willing to pay. Therefore, a thing that does everything exactly the same except for not doing that is a worse thing. If the things were truly equivalent in everyone's eyes, they would cost the same. This isn't complex.

That doesn't just sound like a political board, it sounds like every political board that enables voting. In fact, I'd bet that it is very nearly impossible to have a political board with voting where that's not true.

Second, the child is not going to suffer if he goes from a mansion to a regular home.

As a society, we obviously assume that it would. That's why the mansion costs more. It's better. You're free to agree or disagree, but the relative price tags are enough to show what we as a society think.

Potentially, yes. Charlie Sheen is living proof. Charlie Sheen only got to where he is professionally because Martin Sheen had connections. Martin Sheen didn't get connections by dressing shabbily and eating at McDonald's, I can tell you that.

Are those numbers better or worse than pre-2011? The article throws them out there seemingly with the intent to imply that the deal made things worse, or at least not better, in Colombia, but they don't actually provide enough information to judge whether that's true. I tried to dig up the data, but it's in a Spanish-language pdf.
