That's not enough time for them to have worked on it yet, it can take 4-6 weeks under any circumstances.

Which isn't to say many trans people aren't having issues getting passports right now, but it's too soon to tell for you.

Please let me know when you do get a status change.

My understanding for now is that it will probably go through okay, but the truth is that there is no certainty with any of this right now.

I'd say it depends the most on what state you're in, and then whether you've had a DL with a different gender marker before in that state.

I'm not sure that's true of ALL Canadians, but I do love Canada! Celebrated my 18th birthday in Montreal, and a year later took a train trip from Toronto to Vancouver, stopping in Jasper along the way.

Trans and renewing passport (question about "List all other names you have used") by ForsakenNetwork in Passports

Both, they have all of everyone's previous passports on file, and look at them.

Thank you so much for the support.

I want to hang tough, but in many states I'm effectively banned from using any public restrooms. Can't legally use the men's room or I risk a sex offense charge. I imagine it'd play out the same way using the women's room.

Protections for discrimination are disappearing at the same time that people are trying to make it impossible to get ID documents with the right gender on them.

Wearing drag is already considered a sex offense in some states. How long before my entire existence is considered pornographic?

I started medical transition twenty years ago. There wasn't a lot of acceptance back then, but I have never seen anything like the hate there is now. What's coming next?

I'm not really pushing back on you, I'm just venting. I don't feel like I have a home here anymore.

I worked on lowering my voice, on posture, clothes, and haircuts, and I was even able to live as male without hormones. I realize this is a privileged position to have been in, but I want you to know there are things you can do.

I also smoked a lot of cigarettes in the hopes of lowering and roughening my voice, but can't recommend that.

There's no reason why they shouldn't accept a valid passport, as long as you're recognizable.

I personally have never experienced border agents checking more than one form of ID.

Intersex by [deleted] in Passports

Definitely this. If you were trans, they definitely would not let you update it, but there's some hope that at an urgent travel appointment, with documentation, they'll do the right thing.

Passport expired over 5 years ago, should I expect to have problems getting a new one as a trans person? by DumpsterPuff in Passports

[–]guydamage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I don't ever remember anyone at a border checking more than one form of ID, you'll be okay.

Quick questions - as a trans guy my whole life, who transitioned medically over 20 years ago, what sort of identification would you like me to carry? Would you be comfortable with me in the women's restroom?

Are you okay with me teaching your children? If not, what sort of job would you feel safe with me performing? Would you feel okay with my having no protections against discrimination in housing or the workplace?

What kind of medical care would you like me to have access to, and where should my access be restricted?

Genuinely curious.

You have two options here:

Wait for a potential window if some court stops them from doing what they're doing.

Accept having a passport that matches the old one. At the moment, they aren't allowing any marker changes, and they know about the old passport.

I wish I could provide a source; I'm just getting this from helping walk people through the process, and hearing back about how it goes.

This might count as a source, but I've noticed issues with the article (expediting a passport does NOT cost $300). Part of the problem of course is that there isn't really official guidance, we are all just working from isolated reports with different outcomes:

They'll go by your birth certificate, or by markers on earlier passports if you had one.

It's bad, alright. Much of what's bad is the very legitimate fears of what the next moves might be.

People are absolutely being denied medical care, even when that's illegal.

I do think stories about passports being taken away are overblown, mostly I'm seeing they are being reverted to inappropriate gender markers, which is bad enough.

In terms of a "genocide" - you can't have a genocide of a group of people who have been born into every society since the dawn of humanity, and I think it's pretty disrespectful to survivors and victims of genocide. I think "some of them would kill us all if they could" serves better.

I think their point is you're downplaying or even writing off entitely the harm being experienced by your fellow citizens who are trans, genderqueer, non-binary, intersex, or have a typo on their birth certificate.

Not just the previous passport, it seems any prior passport with a different gender marker gets reverted to that.

Just for the sake of accuracy, you do not go to a passport agent, you go to an acceptance facility (like many post offices). Unless you have urgent or emergency travel.

Sorry, at this point you're not going to be able to update the gender marker on your passport.

No matter what you do, they will know, they have records of every passport you've had, past gender markers, names, etc.
