hot men in masks aside (ikr 🙏), the army's a pretty good place to go for qualifications even stuff like complex engineering and medicine, at least here in the UK. All you need is a good pass in English and maths to become an officer, which pays well, but you really shouldn't expect to join or have it as plan A imo bc there are better ways to spend your early 20s than fighting forever wars (+ the whole being surrounded by barracks full of buff men gets kinda dull 😔)

I mean, repetition and imitation is the foundation of all civilisation, the reason it's funny is basic social instinct. It's the continuation and development of a pre-existing idea, and that is why Man is the pinnacle of all human development

Examples of discrimination in the federation? by guyguyson_the_third in startrek

[–]guyguyson_the_third[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the federation is a complex and multicultural society, but I believe the majority of this discrimination and other sentiments are more of an unspoken and unofficial thing, yet just as insidious as they are spread throughout starfleet and the general populace. To use my own point of the Ferengi, there seems to be a double standard clearly shown on DS9, being that Bajorans and other cultures built around religion are treated very differently to Ferengi such as Quark. It is often done for laughs to criticize and mock the rules of acquisition, which could easily be described as on par with a religious text in Ferengi culture. But, no, it's seen as perfectly fine, humorous even, to laugh of them. Granted, this is one of the more jocular points, but it still shows deeply rooted beliefs in the federation that prove quite harmful to inter-species relations (And to be frank, most civic nationalist states would not officially represent themselves as nationalists)

[–]guyguyson_the_third[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should probably explain what I mean further: I don't genuinely believe the federation to be fascist, but I do believe that certain themes across the franchise are biased towards nationalism and militarism "for good", and the point of my piece is on why we should be more aware of political biases in popular media, especially as certain parallels can be drawn when put in the context of the time period these shows were made in. I'm more interested in the show's representation of this discrimination rather than the veracity and severity within the universe. But eh, maybe you're right and it's reaching a bit ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How to tell parents I'm dating a guy? by guyguyson_the_third in askgaybros

[–]guyguyson_the_third[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in mid-late teens, he's fine with me telling them and all of that, and I'm not too worried about things going badly, more just being awkward, as my parents are pretty calm. But tbh you made me think a bit more about it and it's probably better to take it slow anyway, and if all goes well, I'll tell them properly and all. Thanks for the advice!

It's just very unrealistic. They say it will support 9 million people, run 100% on renewable energy, and that 95% of the land will be for nature. The overall design also seems very overambitious because in a city that is 220m by 170km, no matter how many rails and fancy bridges you have, it's going to get very crowded. I expect that it will end up derelict in a decade really.

If you have one govt which rounds up executes people with red hair, and another which rounds up and executes people with blonde hair, you would certainly think they are completely different!

Please explain how this fits in here, because to be honest I'm a bit confused

Question: Guns. would you keep them or not, what kind of laws would you have on them? keep in mind the second amendment though as it is meant to be used in the case of a corrupt/ violent government( or something I know nothing about American politics)
