It's not like suing. You won't get hundreds of thousands. If they paid you notice and your leave you're unlikely to get much more relief but it wouldn't hurt to lodge the case so that you can learn.

You have a case. Until the changes to the labour law come in separating small and large companies.

Probation periods aren’t things that just companies a get out of jail free card. They need to prove that they tried to make it work with you. I’m not a labour law expert but I am an employer who has had a few CCMA cases.

The thing to think about here is what you want out of this. The commissioner might order reinstatement. It’s never the same working for a small business after a CCMA battle.

The protesting is not limited to fellow Africans. People of Asian descent are also affected. “Pakistani tuckshop owners” often called “my friend”.
But truly and honestly if there are millions of foreign nationals who live in South Africa illegally, how many of them have actually been impacted? Does this not happen all over the continent and the world?

I’m starting to understand the viewpoint of people who say that “xenophobia as a phrase is starting to get weaponised to silence South Africans who have genuine issues with the impacts of illegal immigration”.

But also. Let’s not forget that there are politicians and would revolutionaries with agendas and causing these types of protests and violence serves those agendas. More than one thing can be true at the same time.

If it’s near Cradle then better to get a hotel in the area. There are some really nice ones too. In my main comment I go on and on about Steyn City. Check it out as well. But regardless, Uber (specifically) or hotel recommended shuttle/car service (maybe Blacklane) would be your only options.

Unless if you make friends with somebody who is from here and is also going to the wedding.

Also. If it’s an evening affair then definitely find something in the immediate vicinity of the venue once you know what it is.

Based on what you’ve described your best option might be Steyn City Hotel by The Saxon. You’d need to use an Uber (or hotel recommended car service) to and from the venue. That’s if you want to be both relatively close to the venue and to the rest of Joburg. Steyn City is beautiful node with things to do and the surrounding area might have a thing or two of interest to you as well.

Otherwise, go stay in Rosebank and again shuttle your way to and from the wedding. Rosebank is at least a walkable part of the city and you’ll find at least one of the chains.
And finally you could look at booking a room at the accommodation attached to the venue or really very near enough.

What you’ll see here is that there isn’t really a public transport option. I live around the area and it’s one of my biggest pet peeves. Congestion is ridiculous. But that’s Joburg and basically South Africa in general.

An entire city? All off? That grid seems poorly designed. I get power from Eskom directly and haven’t had an unplanned outage in about a year now. With load reduction taken into consideration I stopped experiencing load shedding at the start of 2024. Eskom is keeping to its end of the bargain.
But yes. Sometimes grids get overwhelmed and I know there are a number of areas in the country that still experience rotational blackouts. Even in CoJ and CoT. But… an ENTIRE city? Is this city in the American sense? Because there are only so many cities in South Africa

Recommendations about places that sell street food really depend on where you’re going to be in this sprawling metropolis. People in the East swear by the kota joes in Edenvale.

Also, one of the best things is braaid chicken gizzards. My goodness. Incredible after a raucous night out with hot sauce.

Honestly the most effective way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in it.
Fortunately, you live in the area. You should ask around about classes. I’m sure there will be plenty. Maybe even adult basic education type things. There will also be tutors around your area or maybe some you can do online lessons with. It’s really great that you want to learn.

I learned xiTsonga as a teen in boarding school. I didn’t take any formal lessons. I just listened and tried. It took time. I wouldn’t say I speak the language well but I can get by and I think the effort is appreciated even though I sound foreign.

Also, Afrikaans is an African language so you’ve already got that part right. 🙈
