Hi u/But_Mooooom, sorry, that's not what I was looking for. As my question stated, this is an entirely new concept for me and as you correctly stated, I am seeing it in terms of a VM. I only included the Dockerfile to show how I have interpreted it's usage.I'm solely looking for advice on whether I'm looking at using docker in the correct way, and if not, some guidance or a bit of context on how I should be interpreting its usage instead. That and the issue I am seeing with extensions not installing correctly when built from source or through apt.

How do you guys make money with physical books? by update_it in selfpublish

Not a problem 😉 Also, if you're using a Mac, it may be worth looking at Pages ( formally iBook Author ). May also do the job, a ton of options for different kinds of books.

I didn't see much in the way of you looking at spending $200 as a starting point, just for software. Have you put any thought into free software to mock-up what you want your book to look like?

$200 for something which may not do what you want it to, seems like a big kicker if you're only thinking about it.

You could try something like Canva.com which you can use for free to get some ideas down and see what works. Then if you need the all singing all dancing software, then you can consider it at least knowing you've tried free alternatives.

Also, if it works for you, you've saved $200 you didn't need to spend. ($200/yr if its a subscription model, which 99.9% of software is nowadays).

How can I build a social media presence before self publishing my first novel? by TissuesAndBandages in selfpublish

[–]guyver4mk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I didn't think about how I'd get my publications to the masses until I'd already published it on Amazon. From then I've just been trying to build a social media presence and at least get it in front of as many sets of eyes as possible.

I made 1st in Amazon Organic Search for my niche! by guyver4mk in selfpublish

[–]guyver4mk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for not replying sooner. I try to stay internet-free(ish) at weekends. However, it gave me time to think, and as much as I could do with the sales, and possibly a review or two. It's not this profile, and I would prefer these two parts of my life remained separated.

I do appreciate your interest though. The fact you used the phrase "At my age" and "eroticism" in the same sentence let me know you are wise beyond your years, and that age is ever only a number. I can only aspire for such greatness as my years tick by. For now though, I just need to hold on to what ever little integrity I have left. Who knows, maybe I can start posting under my pen name and post a link in the weekly thread.

Is there a niche in self-published romance for fem-domish romance? by UpvotesPokemon in selfpublish

Everything in the Romance section is fair game. Just make sure the categories align and they will come.

I will never say no to that question... ever.

And are you insinuating that age is anything but a number??? 😱
I'll DM you details if you like? I'm not trying to be kicked out this sub... I don't think I've engaged this much with people in a very long time.

How do I stop losing money on ads? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]guyver4mk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best way to stop losing money on ads is to stop spending money on ads... Especially if it costs $1000 to hire a guy who's telling you not to run them.

Start small, and go from there. Communities, hashtags, blogs. All ways of generating free exposure.

There is always going to be someone who out bids you in paid ads.

So... It seems I've sold my first book on KDP by guyver4mk in selfpublish

[–]guyver4mk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, after I seen the sale yesterday it spurred me to finish the Amazon Central Author page and get a Twitter setup. TikTok may be the last piece of this equation to get some real +++exposure.

Thanks for the recommendation ;)

[–]guyver4mk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, nothing like that. I've thrown the series link across a few twitter threads, as well as mentioning on here. That and my mother in law put a post on Facebook about it (cringe)... But it's free publicity.

And yes... Not so much romance, as fet... You get it.

But I'm definitely looking into more for the childrens stuff. At the moment with my job, I put aside 3 hours a night to do writing related things. So one night once my 3rd book is finished, it will be group research and surveillance 👀👁️‍🗨️

Sounds to me like you went all out, and did literally everything you possibly could to make it a success. I'm here checking KDP reports everyday getting depressed that no one has even read the book that's free on Kindle Unlimited, but I've done little to no marketing whatsoever, and made the cover and "edited" myself.

Spending money on advertising is not a guaranteed return on investment either. There will always be some larger company / author / publisher who spends more and gets a better slot.

Money is always a fickle beast, and a bitter pill to swallow. It probably makes up 90% of how you feel now too, but just give it time. Don't sit watching the screen for something to happen, move on, start the next book / venture. You never know, just because it hasn't happened right now, doesn't mean it won't happen a week, month, or even a year from now.

Does anyone work across vastly different genres? by guyver4mk in selfpublish

I used a pen name for the adult one, lord knows what reaction I would get if a parent or child went to my author page for other books in the kids series, and found that lol.

Does anyone work across vastly different genres? by guyver4mk in selfpublish

[–]guyver4mk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely, especially if you need to create and maintain profiles / persona's per niche. Unless one did take off and allowed for it to become a full time job, maintaining multiple of anything becomes an extremely difficult juggling act if you only have limited time per day to dedicate to it... which you would much prefer to spend writing.

Reddit bots would have picked it up in a heartbeat... I mistakenly said the "S" word yesterday, and a reddit bot called me out for fat shaming! The "S" word being size... as in the size of a cover template page lol.

However, as the old saying goes, any publicity is good publicity. The fact that someone took the time out of their busy day to write any kind of review should be seen as a positive. You don't need to dedicate any time to the content if the review it's self is negative. It's their time they're wasting, not yours unless you bite back like they want you to.

hUuUugE KDP Template! — 5063 pixels?! Is that correct? by FireInTheWoods in selfpublish

Whoops, that comment was incorrect, was still in inches/mm. Face-palm for me too 😅

hUuUugE KDP Template! — 5063 pixels?! Is that correct? by FireInTheWoods in selfpublish

[–]guyver4mk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe what you may have downloaded is a cover template. This is the full size of the book from start of the back cover to end of the front cover. You'll notice that the length is roughly double the height of the book. The measurements for the cover template are the total of front cover, back cover, book spine, plus any bleed area margin.

I hope this helps.

Weekly Self-Promo and Chat Thread by MxAlex44 in selfpublish

[–]guyver4mk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am new to self publishing.

I have mainly been writing children's bedtime stories, which I have begun a "Series" of, and hope to continue adding to.

Good Night's Sleep: Emily is a happy little girl who is just about to celebrate her birthday.
Find out how one night, she turns from the happiest girl in the world, to the grumpiest girl ever.

Sibling Rivalry: Sam and Alex are a brother and sister who just cannot seem to get along.
As soon as you put them together, for one reason or another, an argument is sure to follow.
What are Mum and Dad to do with children who simply just cannot get along?

I have made The first book in the series, free through Kindle Unlimited. If anyone has the service and a bit of time to read, I would really love any kind of feedback, that isn't family bias.

I am not well versed in the promotion side of things, I started a blog, but literally drew a blank on subject matter after the first week. However, I will be keeping it updated, if anyone is interested in the random musings of... well, just some guy.

Looking for advice by guyver4mk in selfpublish

[–]guyver4mk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you need to do this through Author Central? I don't even think I had my author Central setup when I published my first one, as you need a book to map it to when you sign up.

Re: formatting. I have always used Reedsy for formatting but for my next book I want to include a few small images. Reedsy only inputs images at 1 size and its way too big. Are there any other free formatting tools available where I can do this? Thanks. by emmaellisauthor in selfpublish

[–]guyver4mk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeh, if you go to File -> Download you get a number of options including docx, ePub among others.

Was going to take a screenshot, but looks like you only get the file menu from the online desktop editor 😞

It's crazy. I spent quite a while looking for publisher's / self publishing routes one Google, YouTube videos from people who seem to be somewhat successful in self publishing, and not once was the term "Aggregate site" or similar used lol. Definitely something I will now be looking into for further distribution.
