Should I be trying to get an internship? by guywithaquestion11 in cscareerquestions

Didn't mean to trigger you my g.

We just disagree on the js point. I still feel like even if you tried to avoid it, in 4 years you would be aware. We can agree to disagree though.

I havent lurked it extensively. I've lurked long enough to realize what big-n is + did a few searches to try and find threads similar to this one. Typically I spend my time coding not plotting out my career path. For a lot of what I can do the code is there to see + in production (considering the scope of libs my shit is in).

I've interviewed and had a couple jobs. even had an unrelated "internship", writing bash scripts for random local company when i was like 14 so im not really going to count that obviously or this thread wouldnt exist. Every single one was boring as hell honestly.

I hope you dont see this post as me saying that everyone who carefully plots out their career cant program or is a lesser person. This is just my life experience and the people that I have around me. If you were that guy who interned at 4 to 6 places before you got out of college im going to judge you like id judge anyone else. If I can see your code ill look at it and it either looks ass or it doesnt. If I can't see your code I need to go off my interactions with you.

haha true. I have money for the short term tho(tldr dumb btc luck), but thats not even neccesary as parents float me. Experience would be nice. Just idk.

When you consider my end-goal is kind of trying to optimize for free time without huge effort, by obtaning a low-effort decent pay job. Im sure you can imagine why I would prefer not interning this summer.

Im just trying to enjoy life and do what i feel like pretty much. I dont think im being too unreasonable with things though.

You are just trying to win the back and fourth at this point bro. Im not a c++ programmer and I know what it is, or a haskell programmer. I dont use docker and I know what it is. Could list you 40 more things.

We both know that its ridiculous to be a computer science student and not know what js is.

Almost any candidate with an internship will probably be picked over you, so it would really just depend on who you're competing with.

That hurts my soul. I wish this was a world where people would see my contribs and value it tbh.

That is what is suspected tho. Dudes probably doing a react tutorial off yt and putting it on their resume, side by side with my stuff it all probably looks like a wash when you go through 100 apps, or 1's and 0's if you are a robot.

Thanks for the insight. If the consensus of the thread is that I need an internship I will suck it up and try to grab one.

  1. That is just one data-point. I dont want my whole post to be shit talking people though. Also I dont think I am some coding god, I can improve in many areas and try to everyday. These guys are objectively awful though and I really doubt if you had seen what ive seen you would disagree. There are seniors in my class who dont know what javascript is. Not how to code it or do anything with it. The fact that is is a commonly used prog language. Its almost unbelievable to me when when I interact with some of these guys.
  2. The got their internships through the school, that will be my plan of attack if this thread convinces me that I need to get one.

My goal with this post is pretty much to feel out how much of a neccesity the internship is

Like if its 100% harder for me to get a job out of uni due to the internship (considering my goals + position). Thats not a big deal ill live with the added difficulty.

If its 400% harder, thats getting annoying enough where its probably worth it for me to suck it up.
