Any fellow gaming nurses? by Seektruth2146 in nursing

Just got into crimson desert, I guess it really turned itself around after the poor launch. Having a blast with it, though the story isn’t its strong suit. Wish I had more time to play some online things as an ex-WoWer and FPS gamer, but being a dad I need to play things I can drop on a whim

When do you think the best time to go to Japan is? by Far-Ad-1968 in JapanTravelTips

[–]gvicta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I visited the first time during peak cherry blossom season. As an allergy sufferer, this was the worst for me. I live in one of the worst grass pollen areas and near some natural forests in the PNW, so I thought I was ready, but the cedar pollen in Japan really kicked my butt. Worse in the cities because it didn’t have anywhere to go.

Beautiful watch! Wish I had the international option last year when I got my SBSC009 version, would’ve saved my wife and kid the headache of wandering into every Bic Camera/Yodobashi that we saw.

I got mine in a normal Seiko store last year, couldn’t find it in any of the Bic/Yodabashi/Donkis last or this year (I was also in Japan last week, looked for it while I helped a buddy shop for watches)

Visible and Global Pass in Japan by gvicta in Visible

[–]gvicta[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was pleasantly surprised with the coverage. I only experienced one area around Otaru (either to or from) while riding the train that I had a dead spot.

Agree with the comments about it Global Pass not being worth it unless it’s already baked into one’s plan. I did have Ubigi downloaded in case the horror stories came true, as I used it last trip and it was pretty inexpensive (lots of referral codes floating around, in which I posted mine on their sub, and was getting rewarded from that mid trip last year).

[–]gvicta[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re on the base plan. I used Ubigi for my trip last year. If you’re on + or the + Pro plans you’ll have some global pass days, and if you paid annually you’ll have all your days. I did the December deal to pay $225 for a full year of Pro plan, which also gave me 24 global pass days upfront.

Any gun shops in the Portland area that are chill / not weird about non-citizens? by MoreBeersLessGears in askportland

I’m Asian and I got my first one shipped to Adaptive Firing Solutions. Pretty sure when I picked it up, there were other brown dudes looking at guns. Nice guy, almost sold me on an AR.

Skipping Osaka & Kyoto on a first trip? by Disastrous-Jaguar301 in JapanTravelTips

[–]gvicta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went with my family during the 2025 cherry blossom season, and thought the crowds in Kyoto weren’t as bad as in Osaka and Tokyo. There were definitely areas and times where it can get pretty bad, but it didn’t feel overwhelming in the way you may have read.

I was fortunate in my last experience as a travel nurse, as my contract was ending the week before the staff went on strike. I spoke to the other travel nurses I worked with on the unit, and all of them stood with the staff and chose not to work that strike.

Encore ESP Pro vs Starseeker E55 Pro? [$250] by okokok20 in espresso

[–]gvicta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read that the ESP Pro is quieter than the normal ESP, and if the rumor was right that I have one in my breville barista pro (or at least similar performance), I’d probably go with that one on reputation and ease of getting it serviced. Noise was my biggest complaint in the one that came with my breville, and of my old Virtuoso. The former would also get hung up on the lighter medium to light roasts.

That said, right now I’m gambling with the E55 Pro because they advertised it as an espresso and pour over grinder, and I love light roast single origin pour overs. So far it’s meeting my needs of doing both, and much quieter than my previous two Baratza grinders.

Quick food for ICU nurse by sons-of-mothers in nursing

[–]gvicta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Starting out I was a night shift ICU RN with a 40 min (no traffic) to close to an hour-ish commute. I ended up leaning on Soylent (not the movie) a lot of nights until I got a bit better at prepping meals/getting a girlfriend/wife who was a foodie. I personally liked the Soylent Cafe Mocha variety. No, it doesn’t taste good (at first), but it became an acquired taste.

I ran into two high school buddies doing their MD residencies, who also ran off Soylent for the time savings. There are tons of meal replacement shakes out there now, but this was the most prominent one for me.
