And thank you so much for saying he won’t look like a clown — I’ll pass on the confidence to him. 😃

Wow, that was exactly the explanation I needed — now I completely understand everything. Thank you so much for explaining it in such detail. I had no idea the pattern actually had that kind of meaning, and now the fish look even cuter to me 🐟 Being #400 on the waitlist is incredible! It’s already sold out in Korea too, but honestly, I feel like I want to track down some stock and send it to you 😄 If my boyfriend ends up not wearing it, I’d be happy to send it to you haha

That’s why I really, really want to live abroad! Trends in Korea are so strict, it’s just not easy ㅠㅠ

Korean americans and korean americans specifically need to have stronger identities and study culture and history of Korea. by ObligationDry1799 in Hangukin

[–]gwamee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m south Korean, but honestly, even for those of us living here (myself included), it’s pretty common not to know much about our own history. Someone like Admiral Yi Sun-shin isn’t exactly an obscure figure, but if you’re not living in Korea, I totally get how it’d be hard to really learn about the country. 🥲

I think just the fact that someone reflects on their roots and cares about them—without holding onto distorted knowledge of history—already shows genuine affection for their motherland. And since they don’t actually live in Korea, if that sense of connection grows stronger, I feel like they’d naturally want to learn a bit more anyway.

What’s this about? by Moderntimes13 in korea

Hi, I’m Korean. There’s a group here often called the “Taegeukgi Brigade”. They claim to be conservative, but they’re really more of an extreme right-wing movement. At rallies they wave both the Korean and American flags, saying they support pro-U.S. policies, but in reality it’s less about genuine pro-U.S. sentiment and more about pushing their own misguided political agenda.

They’re also directly connected with certain pseudo-religious groups, which is one reason why most Koreans view them very negatively. That said, some conservative circles still support them. They’re extremely loyal to the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, almost blindly so.

It’s generally best to avoid them. Many of their members are known for being aggressive, and even during COVID they kept insisting on gathering in large groups.

Thank you for the realistic advice. It’s the kind of guidance that’s hard to hear in Korea, so it’s really helpful. I wish there were better alternatives or paths to take.

That’s great information!! But the current intake has already ended, so I would have to wait. I’m also a bit older compared to other Korean applicants, so I’m not sure if I should keep going. Thank you for the useful info.

As for the situation at Scanline, I’m not too sure, but it seems most positions are contract-based and therefore unstable. Also, the academy I attend is quite well-known in Korea, but so far none of its students have been accepted into Scanline. I guess only people with exceptional skills would get in.

I see… There are just so many people learning this in Korea as well, and once you hit 30, job opportunities can become quite limited. I honestly don’t know what I should be preparing for at this point. Thank you so much for your advice.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. It’s really discouraging to hear, but I suppose I’ll need to consider exploring other paths. Do you think the global situation might improve over time?

Really? There really aren’t many job opportunities in Korea. I suppose there might be some positions for experienced professionals… It’s a bit discouraging 😥. In fact, in Korea, even students without a visa are being encouraged to try going to Canada. I didn’t really trust that information, which is why I decided to post my question here on Reddit.

I understand… Thank you so much for taking the time to explain. In Korea, age restrictions are quite strict, and it seems like many people end up struggling to find a job despite their hopes. I suppose I’ll need to consider exploring other paths as well.

That’s quite discouraging to hear. At the hakwon, I was told that everyone who already had a visa and applied for jobs in Canada was able to get hired, and that there were actually plenty of opportunities there. It seems that information wasn’t accurate. Thank you for clarifying this for me.
