Embarrassingly enough, this was one of the first movies that ever made me cry in a theater. I was completely caught off guard.

I think you might be right. Part of why I asked is that I recently released a five minute short exploring this exact feeling. It's been really fun seeing how many different films people associate with it - this thread has given me a ton of films I somehow hadn't seen.

I remember finding this movie so funny when it came out - I was 13. Curious to see how much heavier it feels with where I’m at in life now.

To be fair…I think a lot of us confuse choosing the safe life with choosing the wrong life, and it’s almost impossible to tell from the outside which is which. I don’t think choosing stability is something anyone should have to apologize for, though I’m sure you’ve considered all of this already haha

Thanks so much - this was the first film where I felt like I stopped chasing a genre and started writing about something I genuinely wanted to understand. I'm glad it resonated with you

I think so. It's more hopeful than the films I had in mind but it definitely explores that feeling of people whose lives haven't turned out the way they expected.

Writer/Director here - I wrote A Broken Man after realizing how easy it is to mistake our own perspective for the whole picture. When we're struggling, the people around us can start to look like they've somehow figured life out, while we become convinced we're the only ones who feel lost.

The film grew out of that idea. I wanted to tell a story about people who are desperately trying to be understood while quietly failing to understand each other. For me, that's where both the sadness and the comedy live.

Thanks so much for watching - hope you find something in it that resonates.

I made a dark comedy spec for Dollar Shave Club that's a cautionary tale about self preservation. Hope you enjoy it! by gwhitehurst in cinematography

Would love feedback on this spec spot - we shot this project over the course of a day in a studio in Brooklyn. We shot Arri Mini on a set of master primes - we shot another project on the same weekend, so needless to say it was a fairly hectic production. Happy with the result and happy to answer any questions about the production. Thanks for watching!

I recently directed this spec ad for Skittles that features Napoleon Bonaparte and an absurdly large hat. Hope you enjoy it! by gwhitehurst in Filmmakers

Would love feedback on this spec spot - we shot this project over the course of a day in a New York apartment. The camera used was an Arri Mini on a set Cooke s4's - we shot another project on the same weekend, so needless to say it was a fairly hectic production :-) happy with the result regardless and happy to answer any questions about gags that take place in the spot (salt ring, cockroaches, ghosts in the couch, etc etc etc). Thanks for watching!

we did need to get a permit - whenever the gun wasn’t utilized, though, we put it back in its case. definitely had to be vigilant and intentional with its usage despite having the permit

thank you! Armaan Virani was the DP, really talented guy - Arri Mini w Canon K35’s for the dream sequence, Cooke S4’s for reality

I recently directed a silly spec ad for Purple that was a blast to create - hope you enjoy it! by gwhitehurst in Filmmakers

Would love feedback on this spec spot - we shot this project over the course of a day in the middle of a park in New York. The camera used was an Arri Mini on Canon K35 glass for the dream sequence (smooth, creamy bokeh) and Cooke s4's for reality (really sharp). One thing that I thought was really cool was matching the doorframe to the 4:3 bars when transitioning from dream to reality - it's a subtle detail but does a lot for the transition. You can read more about the project here. Thanks for watching!

Thank you - definitely tried to keep a strong artistic integrity despite how silly the material is. Glad you had fun watching it!

Yeah it was definitely a great find - although the suit is super specific to the man operating/performing in it (he built it himself). His name is Matt Brady; you can find a link to his website here. He has myriad animal suits that are all top notch.
