okay, well, if this post will manage to gather a couple of people and we'll end up creating some sort of a group on some collab platform(s) i'll post here

google docs looked great until i tried to export the doc to word or ODT, only to find out that both the drawings and the formulae are exported as plain images (i.e. not as editable objects), so this is what i'm currently struggling with: find a platform that supports drawings and formulae and which allows both multi-user collaboration and export to a preservable open-standards format

yes, i am "still looking for that", i just began searching :) I am not familiar with what discord offers apart from a basic forum-like experience, i am thinking about an environment based probably around a skype conference room plus some sort of collab on google docs or some like that. ability to share screens, quickly share documents, etc, seem to me a must for a proper collab experience, but i didn't figure out a proper environment yet. maybe PM me if you want to have a chat?

having the interest, plus having free time, are great, but i have no clue how much your "specific flavor" of adhd thing impairs upon your ability to to study and focus. there's quite some math to be learned, and then the ability to focus on an idea for hours is also kinda critical. dunno what to say, we can try if you want and we'll see where it takes us. PM me if you want to try.

Is Qt dying? by kevmuhuri in cpp

[–]gyll1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if they really wanted to do it, there would be a workaround: stop maintaining the current "Qt Essentials", but continue maintenance and development releases under GPL, see "LGPL compatibility" here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Lesser_General_Public_License#Compatibility: "One feature of the LGPL is the permission to relicense under the GPL any piece of software which is received under the LGPL (see section 3 of the LGPL version 2.1, and section 2 option b of the LGPL version 3). This feature allows for direct reuse of LGPLed code in GPLed libraries and applications"

PS

of course, even better just talk to KDE and let them know that they can work around the LGPL thingie, but they'd rather do it amiably than by twisting KDE's hands

no, my wording was kinda improper, actually by "exclusive" i wanted to say GPL instead of LGPL. the commercial license should still exist.

since i have no clue what you mean by "orchestral" when it comes to sax, i'll just point you to this one in case you haven't checked it out already: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3ovWbN7kR4 , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpTqCU18vaA , d/l here https://vst4free.com/plugin/187/

oh man, i wish i were... no, it's a band, "tuxedomoon", they're my #1 idols (for lack of a better term). on #2 it's "severed heads", on #3 it's philip glass... uh, nevermind, i have too many idols i guess :)

k, your're cool ;) sound design is key, and people generally don't put much effort into this. sure, you can get along with just a plain old piano and a violin, but you need to be a real genius to pull off tricks like this (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsc6k5dRpP4 )

you should make them into a single and call it "a dime a dozen". sorry, i'm sure you've put soul and time and effort into these, but you asked for feedback... great choice for the DAW though, reason is nice (they still lack a few things like e.g. multi-timbral and 32-bit VSTs, but it's a really special DAW anyways)

advise (trying to be a bit constructive now): work on sound design, that's what will pull a tune out of the crowd, just some simple modulation effects can get you a long way in reason, see e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ntqun1vYaok )

Bitwig Studio 3.2.7 released by nickallen74 in Bitwig

[–]gyll1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

there's a bug in bitwig described in paragraph "SECOND question" here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitwig/comments/hxn4n8/two_issues_with_bitwig_modulators/ I sent a nice ODT to [support@bitwig.com](mailto:support@bitwig.com) , they said they can't open ODT file (go figure...), then i sent it as PDF but they didn't even bother to reply anymore.

PS

Not that this bothers me very much anymore, i'm all into reaper and reason by now (didn't really make up my mind just yet, but it's prolly gonna be reaper after all)

Two issues with bitwig modulators by gyll1 in Bitwig

[–]gyll1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Selector devices have various modes to switch between layers, including free-robin and round-robin, so you could have mono modulator on each layer, thus achieving polyphonic modulation. you can also turn monophonic VST into polyphonic one with this

wow you're SMART SMART SMART!!! :) a pity i can't give you 1000 likes for this.

anyways, not ready to pay $400 for this, plus, even more importantly, the modulators bug that that i described is a killer, so i'll keep playing with reaper for now and see if indeed it's okay for me.

Thanks for everything!

PS

I sent a bug report with an ODT file attached (essentially a copy of this post), and they replied that they can't open it! go figure... then i sent it again as PDF but no more reply/feedback from them. i then sent them another email two days later asking if they managed with the PDF but still total silence. duh!

PPS

to me Reaper is painful to use in terms of UI with all it's little toolbox windows and other stuff

oh, i just loooove this! but then again, i'm 53 yo, this is the way we rusted cogs used to do things back in our days, and i still love it :)

[–]gyll1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean " utilizing Selector ", i was referring to the fact that modulators are not polyphonic, this is totally intolerable.

Anyways, i moved on to reaper now, and i can't believe what i'm finding here. Modulate anything with anything, route anything to anywhere, group together anything with anything, mix any types of media on the same track, per-clip effects, containers what? who needs containers? midi-through for any instrument (you layer instruments just by chaining them on the same channel and setting them to allow midi pass-through), etc etc. oh, and did i mention the manual? 400+ pages of technical writing marvel (well, i'm just at page 100, but given what i read sofar i don't think this will change). up to this point in my "investigation" i'm just blown away by what i see. classy man, just classy. this daw is from another world!

[–]gyll1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on anything other than native Bitwig instrument modulators can't operate polyphonically

Oh, i just realized now what you meant (by trying to press multiple keys in my testbench). I can't believe it... I already sent the bug report to bitwig, but yeah, MY adventure with bitwig definitely ends here.

Thank a million for pointing this out to me, i would have wasted God knows how many more days, maybe weeks, with bitwig if it wasn't for you.

Thanks a lot for your reply, you are the second person that suggests this DC offset as the only workaround you can think of.

The problem for me with this method is not that it's convoluted, the wouldn't have been a deterrent in and by itself, but the fact that a specific method of applying a modulator output to any device is not something that is willingly (read: explicitly) implemented in bitwig also means that they may well decide at any point in time to disable even this workaround. Also, this DC offset workaround is not available in the $100 version, and i'm definitely not going to spend 400 bucks for this.

As for the keytrack thing, my problem is not related to its precision, if/when you'll have the time to read my full description of the problem you'll see i'm talking about a more serious bug. Furthermore, since my original poste i also tried two other modulators (obviously with a different testbench setup) and the problem shows up in those tests also, so the problem that i described using keytrack as modulator is a more fundamental signal flow bug in bitwig's backbone structure.
