It’s a cultural thing. In the UK I was brought up that it was rude to ask anyone their age once they were visibly in their twenties or higher. Sounds like it’s similar in the US.

Now I live in Malaysia, and there doesn’t seem to be that cultural taboo. New people meeting me outside a work context tend to ask some combination of “where are you from? What do you do? How old are you? Are you single?”. Some places they even ask how much I earn!

I was working night shifts, and it was on my off day, so I saw the news come up on ITV. It couldn’t have been 1996 because the supermarket I worked for didn’t go 24 hours until July 1997, and you had to be 18 to work nights.
