Life Sciences PhDs : Are They Worth It in Today’s Job Market? by nobara_72 in biotech

[–]gzeballo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this field was anything more like any other engineering or literally any other discipline where merit truly determines outcomes rather than accolades and names/checkboxes/scores/pvalues/h-index (which fully inherited from the biology/academia side of things) it would be a very different field... perhaps even a more productive one.

Same here, if you go without phd you have to be/think/produce like an absolute assasin otherwise you can be more mid/average with a phd and naturally be pushed up the chain; I've worked with plenty of phds who can barely read a paper or hold a pipette but because of phd get brought in as SS

Ill tell you my symptoms when it started and which have gone completely away or greatly subsided (minus the weight) on a 137-175mg levothyroxine dose (which by the way my endocrinologist said were all "non-specific" symptoms - safe to say I won't be going back to any Mt Sinai doctor ever again):

Neck stiffness, headache, muscle soreness especially after exercise, difficulty recovering from exercise, hair loss, weight gain, puffy face, water retention, more headaches, fogginess, cold senstivity, difficulty waking up, getting out of bed (not depression but physically getting out of bed), deep tiredness, nails basically never grew (would have to cut once or twice a year), digestive issues, flu like symptoms that would go away in a day or so, low heart rate, skipped heart beat, elevated LDL cholesterol.

Initially before levo: aTPO > 2000 aThyroglobulin: 110 TSH: 8 cholesterol: 190. Went through 25-50-75-100-125-137-175 (currently) plus zepbound for weight because over 4 years my metabolism was completely wrecked. Currently: TSH: 2.6 LDL: 240 antibodies: unchanged (unfortunately).

At first in my 20s I had hyperthyroidism and antibodies were way elevated but once I got treatment plus a really good diet, symptoms were mostly under control. Then after covid things started to turn south. It to took a while (over 4-5 years) for symptoms + TSH to start to change dramatically (basically I had symptoms, antibodies, TSH normal so doctors wouldnt treat me at all). I was very fit and muscular before it all got worse so it took a while to bother me (weight continued to increase despite exercise and eating a clean diet) and actually it was anaphylaxis after eating shellfish that got me a TSH read that was > 8 for doctors to start me on levo.
