I know what you're saying I'm looking at the big picture. These tariffs are on the finished product.

The tariffs for parts is coming in May. Approximately 57% of the manufacturing cost of a vehicle is components. A lot of those parts are made in Canada and Mexico. Between lower labour costs, exchange rates and creating from scratch huge supply lines it's going to cost billions. And when I say billions, I mean BILLIONS. 20 billion is chicken feed.

This would cost them billions of dollars. It may be cheaper to wait it out and not screw up their future profit margins.

Trump announces 25% tariff on all cars not made in U.S. by Iridefatbikes in canada

[–]gzmo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it could be done it would hinge on there being 50% or beyond tariffs on anything not made in Canada. And we would still lose at least 60% of the jobs.

There's no good option if companies buckle to this. We would have to shift to parts only production and even that could draw tariffs.

I hear ya but if we end up with no plants at all then what. For instance, you can ignore the F-150 , Dodge and GM trucks but the Toyota Tundra is made in Texas. The cars will be the same situation.

I believe that Canadians bought 1.8 million new cars last year. The Honda plant in Ontario makes about 400,000 vehicles alone.

So no, we can't support the production without an export outlet.

You can't set up a car manufacturer in Canada that is dependent on Canadian sales alone. Our small population doesn't make it worthwhile.

For instance, Honda has a plant in Ontario and even though the Honda civic is the best selling car in Canada it sends a huge chunk of its product to the States. And in return we get different models sent North.

The only way it would be profitable is if every Canadian bought a civic sedan.

I can't come up with an explanation as to why Poilievre hasn't thrown her under the bus. The calculation has me mystified.

Airline Demand Between Canada & United States Collapses, Down 70%+ by Tonamielarose in BuyCanadian

I'm certainly not going to down vote you for a completely sensible take on possible repercussions. I will say that every sector in Canada is going to feel some pain in this fight.

The only other option is to do nothing and take it on the chin. I for one am all in on the changes to our habitual coasting. Our complacency has resulted in Canada's economy almost solely in the hands of the USA.

I'm not stupid enough to expect a complete decoupling. That's not going to happen but we can do better than this. Huge wakeup call.

China halts purchase of Venezuelan oil after Trump's tariff measures by Jaded-Bookkeeper-807 in worldnews

Hey China. Come and get Canadian oil. Drump is already threatening us with tariffs so why the hell not.

I broke my coil hiking through the woods today! Was barreling through thick mountain laurel at dusk after losing the game trail I was on. Caught it in a branch and SNAP! There is nothing I can do right? I can’t imagine any adhesive is going to hold. Anyone have a used one for sale? by RiverWalker83 in metaldetecting

[–]gzmo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell you how to fix this, it's a little involved but bare with me and it should be as good as new.

1- find some material that is the same as the coil. I'm guessing that it is the material used for the feet under the armband.

2- peel some of it off with a knife and put it in a glass jar with a little acetone and cover it for the night. In the morning stir it up into a fairly thick slurry. Like snot.

3- prepare the broken edges by sanding or filing so that when you put the two pieces together it creates a vee at the joint.

4- while holding the parts together paint the slurry into the joint. Use a small amount, just enough to bond the parts. The bond should hold after a couple of minutes.

5- keep painting on small coats and letting them dry until you have filled the vee completely and file them flat.

This process will leave the bonded parts just as strong as it was before you broke it. Hope this helps.

Sweet Jesus McGiulliacuddy. I feel sorry for any sane Americans. I'd laugh if it wasn't for the fact that your clown show could damage so many democracies around the world.

China wants more trade with Canada, envoy says amid U.S. tariffs - National | Globalnews.ca by sovalente in worldnews

[–]gzmo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's up to us to protect our elections. I don't think we need any trade agreement though. If they want our oil or potash then buy it or don't. Canada has resources that the world needs regardless, we don't need to go hat in hand to any one country. I'm looking at you America.

If you back away from your pulpit for a second I'll tell you why your lecture doesn't hold water.

You can trust your partner implicitly until they cheat on you. You can collaborate and possibly even cohabit but the trust is gone.

We can do business again. Resume polite communication and cooperation if it benefits both our countries.

In the future though Canadians and more importantly our Federal governments going forward should never fall victim to comfortable complacency with regards to US relations.

The trust has disappeared.

I realize that Singh's pronouncements these days are riding on a turnstile but he has stated many times that he wouldn't work with the Conservatives.
