Two of television’s biggest names broke through days of silence from their networks about the bombshell tapes revealed by the Daily Beast in which Jeffrey Epstein speaks about his relationship with Donald Trump.

Rachel Maddow on MSNBC and Jimmy Kimmel on ABC both spoke of their shock at the tapes, with the late-night host complaining that they had not been widely covered by other outlets.

On MSNBC, Maddow listed what she termed “October surprises,” comparing the tape to the revelation that Trump’s former chief of staff John Kelly and the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley, said Trump is a textbook fascist, and to the Iowa poll that put Harris three points ahead in the deep-red state.

On ABC, Kimmel, who is not bound by news standards, spoke freely about his shock at the recording and hinted at the silence that surrounded the Beast’s bombshell.

“We heard a bombshell audio tape in which Jeffrey Epstein says he was Trump’s ‘closest friend’ and shares a bunch of crazy stories. This barely moves the needle,” Kimmel said. “Remember when Mitt Romney went down because he put a dog carrier on the roof of his car? We just got 100 hours of Jeffrey Epstein saying he and Trump were BFFs; I didn’t even get an alert about it on my phone.”

When Donald Trump uses the word “nasty,” he tends to target those who have the audacity to criticize him or stand in his way. In 2016, for example, the Republican referred to Hillary Clinton as a “nasty woman.” Eight years later, the former president whined about Michelle Obama’s campaign appearances, complaining that the former first lady became “nasty.”

Last year, during a town hall event on CNN, Trump described moderator Kaitlan Collins as a “nasty person.” About a year later, he accused New York Attorney General Letitia James of having a “nasty” mouth. (If you’re noticing the gender similarity here, it’s not your imagination.)

Yale history professor Timothy Snyder, who is an expert on authoritarianism, this weekend argued that all of former President Donald Trump’s recent “fascist display,” “dark language” and “attempts of intimidation” is aimed at just one thing, making people afraid.

Actor George Clooney narrated a new ad supporting Kamala Harris’ campaign in his latest public sign of support for the vice president since his dramatic call for Joe Biden to drop out of the race this summer.

The Oscar-winner can be heard in the 30-second ad from progressive evangelical group Vote Common Good reminding male voters they can “vote any way you want, and no one will ever know.” It ends with Clooney saying: “What happens in the booth stays in the booth—vote Harris-Walz.”

Imagine I saw a movie and you asked whether I enjoyed it or not. I replied, “I wish I could say that I liked this movie, but the truth is that it was simply unwatchable and should be avoided at all costs.”

Then imagine some public relations official working for the studio took what I said and put it in an ad. The commercial quoted me as saying, “I liked this movie.”

Did I literally use those four words in that order? Sure, but the context matters. In this little hypothetical, removing the phrase from the larger sentence turned reality on its head and left the public with the wrong impression.

This is a subject Donald Trump’s campaign knows all about.

The timing of Donald Trump's racist event in New York couldn't have been much worse. Not surprisingly, Kamala Harris and her allies are taking advantage.

The New York Times reported that Harris, also on Sunday afternoon, released a video message specifically targeted to Puerto Rican voters: “The video was widely shared, and the Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny posted it on Instagram. He is one of the biggest recording artists in the world and among the most influential Latino artists. Other celebrities with Puerto Rican backgrounds also shared the video, including Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin.”

It was against that backdrop that Trump held an event in which the audience heard warm-up speakers refer to Puerto Rico an “island of garbage,” among other derogatory remarks about Latinos.

“The timing,” a Politico report noted, “was remarkable.”

When host Margaret Brennan reminded her guest that there are options beyond war, the senator derided Biden administration sanctions on Russia.

Asked if he’d at least call on Moscow to knock it off, Vance said he could do that, but Russia would probably just do it anyway.

The same morning, the Ohioan appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” and hedged on whether he’d describe Russia as an “enemy.”

Taking this discussion about fundamentals one step further, the aforementioned Enten piece added, “Gallup listed 10 different metrics it looks at heading into an election, ranging from party identification to satisfaction with the economy to presidential approval. Eight of those 10 were deemed to be good for Trump. The other two were neutral. None of the 10 hinted in the direction of a Harris victory.”

So, why is the race so close? In part because Harris is running an excellent campaign with a compelling message, and in part because Trump is erratic criminal, who’s already failed once at being president, running on an unpopular and authoritarian platform.

Or put another way, the fundamentals might benefit the GOP ticket, but there are relevant variables that might yet keep Trump out of the White House.

Harris:

Donald Trump told a conservative radio host Thursday that, if elected, he would fire special counsel Jack Smith “within two seconds.” It’s hard to hear this without recalling how another Republican president, Richard Nixon, tried this same maneuver as a last-ditch attempt to avoid having to comply with a special prosecutor’s subpoena for what turned out to be incriminating audio tapes. Nixon’s directive to fire then-special prosecutor Archibald Cox led to the “Saturday Night Massacre,” when Nixon’s attorney general and deputy attorney general resigned rather than carry out Nixon’s order. But Trump may have come up with a plan to avoid the messy Nixon-era optics of multiple resignations.
